So when longboards came up on another thread, Sam shared this:
Atlanta has a lot more parking lots than fields suitable for buggying... So now I'm interested, but I have questions... Has anybody ever tried this?
Is there a reason why NPW'S are better than foils?
I have an extra set of handles, is there any reason to get a cheap board and some 3m lines and have a go with one of my foils or is this a bad idea?Bladerunner - 30-7-2013 at 05:12 PM
Helmets, butt pads and wrist guards ?
I started with a 3m trainer kite on asphalt with rollerblades and loved it. I would still do it if the spot was still there.
Order a few yards of Qline. It is always handy having some around. erratic winds - 30-7-2013 at 05:59 PM
NPW's are usually chosen because they are so well-behaved on "no" lines like in the video, as well as no cells to blow if you crash it.
I will ride my longboard and my flowboard with a 1.5m trainer on 10m lines in the parking lots sometimes. Surprisingly little wind needed to ride
when you're on pavement!
You need helmet, full pads, and thick gloves. It's easy to get going way faster than intended/comfortable.soliver - 30-7-2013 at 06:17 PM
Is your trainer a 4-line or 2-line?lunchbox - 30-7-2013 at 06:37 PM
I say go for it....just like everyone said though...don't forget your helmet and pads.
I've been tempted to try that on our street...it's a one way ride though as the wind only blows west.
Probably because I'm a handle guy but I never thought about putting my NPW on a bar....those guys made it look so chill...erratic winds - 30-7-2013 at 07:22 PM
3 line trainer, so it reverse launches.soliver - 30-7-2013 at 07:52 PM
Anyone have a good source for shorter line sets?... 15m is the shortest I've seen.
I would like to start out super short (1-3m) then build up to maybe longer (10 ish).
I've seen some decent looking boards on Amazon,... But still in the $60 range... Anyone know how to go even cheaper?... $60 isn't much, but I just
bought an 8m kite, so if I end up having to spend that much, it will have to wait.
Cut your own lines...

These guys in this video don't need (and you don't really want) 15m lines when riding in smaller tight spaces.

With real short lines, weight of line(drag) is not really any concern. So.... you don't even need Dyneema line.
I set up Nasa with 20 ft woven nylon line I found that was in the basement on a spool that was 20-30 years old! Just a wee bit thicker (than say
Q-line)...but still plenty strong and has been tested in 35+mph winds often. Used many times and still no sign of fraying yet.
I also have flown right of the bridal or on 1-2 meter lines.
Home depot may even have suitable cheap strong line on a spool! If you go much longer than 10 meters then switching back to dyneema WOULD be better .kitemaker4 - 31-7-2013 at 05:53 AM
Nasa wings are the ideal kite to fly in parking lots. Most lots have light poles so short lines or no lines are a must. The only kite I know of that
fly well with no lines are nasa wings. I do it all the time. Just attach the bridle lines to handles and go. I also fly with short lines from 5 to
10 feet long and everything in between 100 feet.

Ideal indeed..

I've ridden rollerblades on a narrow 7 ft wide sidewalk along beach with my NPW! And with people walking on it ...!
This is where the NPW make their mark on uniqueness...cheezycheese - 31-7-2013 at 08:34 AM
Dude, forget the longboard, forget the NPW. Pull the lines off one of dem Cores and get busy. I'm sure you can find a skateboard somewhere...
I think this might be our very own HoustonAirhead.. soliver - 31-7-2013 at 02:04 PM
Ok well here's what I'm thinking... I've seen some VERY easy how-to's on building your own deck. So combined with an inexpensive set of trucks and
wheels I can probably build my own board for around $30-$40... And since I'm an experienced carpenter with my own full shop, that shouldn't be a
problem... We'll see what comes of it.Houston AirHead - 31-7-2013 at 03:04 PM
wow cheeze been a long time since i made that video, that was at my parents house. fun timescheezycheese - 31-7-2013 at 05:47 PM

Soliver short lines are easy to make. I built the lines for my rev. Having crashed at the park I would say lots of protective gear. Hard surface is
not forgiving I would try something like 1.8 2 line trainer like my b2 as unlues the wids are 20+ is should pull enough move without ripping you off
like using the 2.6 and is on a bar so you can let go in a hurrysoliver - 1-8-2013 at 03:14 PM
I may end up waiting... It turns out after shipping and buying all the little things to complete building my own, I'll end up spending the same amount
as purchasing a less expensive complete model. ... May have to wait until Christmas :frog:Cerebite - 6-8-2013 at 07:55 PM
Another factor in favor of nasa's is that for a given size they are narrower being a triangle rather than a lozenges shape so they can "turn over"
quicker at the end of a pass.Proletariat - 6-8-2013 at 08:59 PM
Uh oh... Someone mentioned NPW and woke the cerebite
Trucks are pricey when building your own board, I've found. However, long ago, I did end up buying a beat up old longboard off of craigslist for $25.
Over the last year or so, I've been surprised at how many long boards / mountain boards I've seen on CL for $50 or less.soliver - 7-8-2013 at 02:49 PM
Hmmm good info, thanks Dave.Benjo - 10-8-2013 at 05:11 PM
Stumbled upon this topic and figured i would chime in.
My favorite kite for the longboard and the summer winds we have here in Calgary is my access XT 6m tuned for longer brake lines so I can ride unhooked
without the kite stalling trim, set about half.
I prefer longer lines for power on demand. light poles are no problem if you have good kite skills.
As with all aspects of kiting there is a steep learning curve. Take it slow at first, once you master the carving transition it is so effortless and
smooth.
So much fun.
Good luck soliver - 11-8-2013 at 04:31 PM
Benjo, do you have any vid of you riding? Would love to see that!riffclown - 11-8-2013 at 04:35 PM
BTW, Bass Pro Shop has Muzzy Extreme Bow Fishing Line. 75 ft for around $15. Might be just the thing to make a very short set of lines from..Benjo - 11-8-2013 at 05:43 PM
I have a new gopro on order so I will get some footage when it arrives.
Any one else in Calgary head up to Bearspaw school on a sunny summer day there is often a steady SE blow perfect for kite longboarding.Benjo - 11-8-2013 at 05:48 PM
Switch kites has good prices on line sets in varios sizes
