Where not to go if you are thirsty

riffclown - 12-9-2013 at 04:56 PM

 My local McDonalds felt since I ordered the large soda I obviously needed lots of ice. I get 1/4 mile away in traffic when we realize the straws wouldn't go in the cups since the ice was so well packed in. Took this pic so I can can frame it and present it to the manager next time I'm up that way. So here is what nearly $4 worth of ice looks like at McDonalds.

I tend to order drinks without ice. They are generally fairly cool coming out of the machine and further cooled by the release of CO2 pressure.

This is also a good opportunity to see if your server is paying attention to you. I have seen servers load up on ice, pause, replay in their mind what I said to them, and then dump the ice.

On a related note, apparently Domino's, Papa John's, and several other pizza chains are no longer selling pizza by the slice, just whole pizzas. Getting a slice or two, because I was running errands is something I have taken for granted my entire life. For some reason, it seems like the passing of an era.

The small mom & pop pizza joints have not gone this route, thankfully.... yet.

Sam, I have never lived in a state where chain pizza shops sell by the slice. Domino's,pizza Hut,Papa John's as far as i know only sell whole pies.I only patronize the mom and pop shops as this is what I was raised on. When I moved to Atlanta I couldn't get a "slice" to save my life. Worst two years of my life.

Costco and Sams club sell Pizza by the slice, granted they are $2.50 per slice but when it is 1/4 of the Pizza and it is an XXL, for $7.50 more you can get the rest of the whole Pizza. And drinks are $1.50 for an X-Large with as many refills as you can hold. Ice or no ice.
Think a lunch break at Sams Club is in the travels today.
Micky D's is the last place I would get anything from, even a cup of Ice. Just not what I call food, come to think of it, neither is Costco or Sams Club. Still going to stop at Sams Club for lunch.

McDonalds is the worst of all fast food chains by far, well maybe taco bell is a close 2nd.

3shot - 13-9-2013 at 05:05 PM

I would have to say Taco Bell takes the prize for the nastiest fast food place.
Sadly, at most fast food joints, you get what they feel like giving you anyway

I try to stick with Chick-fil-a as much as possible. Different priorities and management mindset at those places. They actually do give a ####.

Four dollar ice..... :o

Kamikuza - 13-9-2013 at 05:21 PM

If you order without ice, do they fill the cup? They don't here - they leave out just about how much the ice would have filled :-/

And they never listen here. I rarely eat McD or KFC (only fast food options) but I'd say 50% of the time they balls up the order. Same goes for Starbucks, although their fail rate is about 25%.

riffclown - 13-9-2013 at 05:26 PM

I agree with Chick-Fil-A as being the best fast food. It's usually my first choice.

Having lived a few years in Italy, I've come to the conclusion that there is no authentic pizza on this side of the Atlantic.

Some of the best pizza I've had was at Zorba's Pizzeria off Marshall Street in Syracuse, NY and around the corner at Varsity Pizza on S. Crouse Ave.

However, that was over 20 years ago... and maybe it's the memories and not the pizza I am remembering.

More recently Planet Pizza, just across the duck pond in Monroe, NY.

Wolf. I find myself favoring the Greek pizzerias as well.
Colonial Pizza is my local place.

Village Pizza in Roslyn, Washington is my alltime favorite. It was next door to RuthAnns store in the show Northern Exposure. As Sam stated, it may have been the atmosphere of the place along with the honey/butter deep dish crust I remember the most. Or all the times we sat eating pizza and watched as they filmed the show.
It could also be they paid me in pizzas for the remodel and new roof I did for them.

There are several authentic Italian pizzerias in the Henderson/Vegas area. Some get all their ingredients from Italy. Many use hot wood fired ovens that are between 700 and 900 degrees. Pizza cooks in around 2 minutes. None offer pizza by the slice that I'm aware of.

That sounds like someone is on the right track.

Grazie in my home town just opened. They use wood fired oven only. the oven is direct from Italy. It is heated to 900 degrees and cooks the pizza in 90 seconds and it is great pizza. When the chef comes in in the morning, the oven has only cooled to 500 degrees over night so he cooks all the bread for the day in the cooling oven. The owner will tell you all about the process if they recognize you as a new patron. They make a mean Bolognese too and a great chicken parm.

My favorite local chain is FlatBread Pizza Co. Also cookd in a wood fired oven and serve all organic meals with ingredients grown at local farms. I think there are 5 of them in New England. Well worth a visit if one is near you.
