Are you interested in buggy racing ?

Interesting post Ken. Not only is it something good to know, but the timing of raising that question is a good one. Rich has been trying to get information from the FISLY World Cup organizers regarding class 8 racing at the 2014 event in Nevada. Apparently there isn't enough interest with the European racers to make the trip and at this time, no class 8 racing at this event. That can change however if there is enough North American interest. All we would need is at least 16 racers and 10 helpers for this to be a consideration. Smith Lake NV is a very remote location and I have no idea at this time of what kind of accommodation will be available, but this can very well be our chance to kick start some interest in North American racing. More details to follow and not to hijack this thread a new one will be posted as soon as more info is available.

I would love to get into racing but it would have to be an East coast thing or I really couldn't even consider it (need to spend time with kids, their school work & sports) for now.... Some racing at WW would be fun even modified from class 8 rules....

that's probably the unfortunate reality for many - YES there is interest but I doubt there would be many that could fly to the east and west coasts to take part. The closest possibility for us would be Wildwood at an 11hr drive and others from Great Lakes area would be even further. So interest yes, but likelihood of getting to any is very low.

Something to keep in mind on the WC event coming up is that we are talking what could be a once in a lifetime event. It's a lot closer than going to Europe.

Yes , getting the world cup is a real exciting prospect.

I have a strong feeling that Mark is correct and while lots of folks would be interested in a race if it was set up and happening in their back yard that not as many are serious enough about it to travel X-country or internationally?

I started this poll to help give Rich a better idea of how many are even interested. I figure if we can't get 16 ( + 10 ) to post that they are interested he may be putting a lot of time and effort into something that just isn't going to happen ?

I think it is different over in Europe / GB. Maybe because they don't need to travel as far to races? Maybe because they have the numbers and years of experience + locations?

In my experience I just want to get out and ride when the wind actually picks up at events. All too often events become a gab fest' as we wait for wind. Then it is every man for himself when it actually blows ! :dunno:

I'd be totally interested like Bruce, if there were something that could happen a little closer to home,... A bit too much space between GA and NV, and family takes priority over kites.

I most certainly would come in last place of whatever race I was in, but would love to participate!!!

This World Cup is in my state and it's a 6 hour drive for me. That's a good part of a day each way even for me. Of those interested, how many will have to drive at least twice as far as me or fly and ship their equipment? Our spread out continent could be an insurmountable obstacle.

What about something like a tournament sort of set up? Each major event (NABX, WBB, JIBE, SOBB, DBBB etc etc) held a race where the finalist (1st, 2nd, 3rd places) were able to take part in a bigger race perhaps with some sort of sponsorship (via vendors or NAPKA) to help cover the travel costs.

This way more people might be able to participate, but the REALLY serious guys could actually show their mettle and go all out for the big win.

Just lobbing ideas,... It's always easier to spend other people's money :D

Racing? No. However I am interested in seeing this happen in NA. If time and stuff work out once details are determined, I would love to help out.

My understanding was 16 total racers from anywhere not just NA. Did I not read that correctly?

It is good to see there is interest, but I can say that the land between us is far greater challenge than the race itself. If this governing body does decide to go ahead with plans for WC 14 I will update accordingly.

from what I know it isnt a matter of someone else setting it up, its a matter of YOU setting it up in your area. if you are a member of NAPKA you have the right and all the stuff to set up your own race or races. I am not pointing fingers at Soliver by any way, just the opposite. Like my wife says,"if you want it bad enough you will find a way to make everyone suffer until you can pull it off".
As stated earlier this a chance to make some noise about us yahoo's in the US who think we can buggy. I would be happy to show up and do what ever is needed to make this happen. Making it possible for my team riders to race has been in the works for over a year. Any other team riders hoping for the sponsorship to help out?

I know the guys in Europe can drive for 1 day and travel from France to the southern part of Italy, but come on guys. We are the wealthiest in the world, and we complain about a few extra miles? Now that I have pissed a few off with my opinion, is there anyone who is serious about helping to make this happen. Anyone willing to match my financial contribution to send our team riders? I have 2, maybe 3, that have hopes of making a strong showing.

idk...racing seems like a waste..i would just rather be flying but thats just me.. i could care less who was passing me or i them...thats how i felt about skiing when in my prime(long past)..aoxomoxoa..this is all about smiles not ribbons...that said i would help anyone who wants

if WC isn't coming, go there. I spend less than 1500 all in for DePanne. I spent more each year for NABX.

why not just hold a NA Cup like the Eurocup

The next time you go to the beach, park, playa, or better yet a parking lot, set out 2 traffic cones or anything else that you can use as a point of reference and see how well you can turn at that point. After you make your turn head to the next one and do it again.
This has nothing to do about racing, it is about control, skill and your ability to turn at a specific point. As a kid runs out infront of you at the park and you need to avoid a problem. As you get better at the turning at a specific point, you are better at your sport.

Now if your buddy happens to want to follow you as you practice your turns and happens to pass you...........

A race is nothing more than 2 or more people challenging each other as you chase each other down the beach or as you try to pass the guy with that air mattress kite. Dont tell me you never tried to catch the buggy infront of you or try to not let the person behind you catch up. You have nothing to prove to me or anyone in this sport. You and you alone are nothing more than the next person in a buggy flying a kite. If you want to challenge me or anyone else, have at it. If you dont, I will. :cool:

Jeff, I do both of those all the time when I am out. Practice turning around a specific point, or trying to catch or stay ahead of someone else.
The difference is I can bail whenever I wish, or start over, whatever. In a "race" you are committed. Other folks may be much more serious about the winning aspect. Kind of like golf, some people just get far to serious about the game and suck the enjoyment out of it for others that happen to be I front of them.

That being said, I do hope WC class 8 makes it to NA and I will do my best to either help or participate.

Next time we fly together bring cones. :)

If I'm not trying to pass or keep from getting passed , it's because I want to remain near the rider for some reason like.video, chatting, or one of us is learning something. Any other time it's on. I love for skilled riders to see me and join in. The challenge is good for everyone involved.

Forgive me my ignorance. I've never witnessed a race in person, and truth be told I dig the idea and would love to participate but I'm most certainly up to par to race amongst other riders (see PB below). My question is this in a 2 cone type of course, is one of your turns always going to be an upwind turn?

Pfft! Of course I'd like to race and I'm progressing a ton every time I go out. But, as most others, it's a matter of money. We should start racing at SOBB just for fun.

Brian Holgate and I have been talking about setting up some courses to add a new level to our friendly competitiveness. We help and encourage and loan equipment to each other, but at the end of the day, there is a winner. :thumbup: You guys should do the same thing at SOBB.

Depending on the wind, there's a bunch of different racing scenarios we could set up at SOBB. Can't wait!
