Brand new addiction coming?

macboy - 10-10-2013 at 06:56 PM

Just hung my name on one at the LHS. Now to convince the wife it's not another hobby - it all falls under the "RC" hobby umbrella

Its just an expansion of your current hobby :D

That looks great!

How does it work in terms of controlling the sheets when you turn about?

RC boats can be fun, sometimes... I drove a bayliner at 30mph with a guy hanging over the side to catch a run away boat. Got to go swimming lots of times to get the boat. Seal, seal and reseal but water still gets in. These were motorboats. I've tried the sailboats but they are too slow to be fun. The sheets are controlled with a servo with a longer arm.

I like my RC either rolling or flying... rather not have to put on my swamp shoes and go wading through muck in my local pond or lake.

@ lives2fly - that's (in my opinion) where the sailboats lack I think. It appears to me that the sheets are controlled simultaneously by a single servo and your only option is sheeting in or out. You must rely on the wind to push the sails over when tacking/gybing. I've also read that if the sail servo/winch isn't strong enough you have to point upwind if not even into the wind carefully for a brief moment to harden the sails right up. It'd be nice if you could individually trim the sails. I mean, my radio can certainly do it but the boats are designed and rigged as 2 channel units. Who knows, if I really get on with it maybe I'll build up a nice home brew 10 channel rig. The wife won't see me for months!

I always wanted an RC Surfer for the no wind days. Problem here is when we get waves it's almost always kiteable :(

BigMikesKites - 12-10-2013 at 04:08 AM

I love the surfer. I did planes for a long time. I had one float plane, actually a PBY. I had to swim 300 yards or so to get it once when a wave killed the engine. Then i was wet and figured I was already wet so i would try again. It wouldn't take off more than an inch above the water, so I figured i would land it in the grass near me. You know the little ridge at the edge of a lake or pond where the water laps up against the land. Didn't make it.

While for some addictseventually getting off methadone is something they strive for throughout their battle with addiction, for some, like me, if its working why fix it? To be honest I am afraid to go off it completely just because I am afraid of what might happen.

I also did RC submarines. Whew!!! And you thought kiting was expensive?......
