Tug Hill 2014

Kober - 10-12-2013 at 03:46 PM

.... Bad news is that County is working on getting access to land owned by farmers and situation dose not look good .... As stated there is 50/50 chance that this will be official event ....
.... Good news is that we are going anyway just like was done last year .... There is 1 location that we can use but is not as big as official event site 2 years ago ....
... Me and few people from New Jersey Kite Addicts will probably rent a house for that weekend when Masskiting crew stay in another one ... If anyone is interested please contact me in next 2 weeks to reserve u spot ... If someone needs kite lesson there will be instructor available from Kite Club NY ..... and I hope to see Zeb there too ....

When?

Kober - 10-12-2013 at 04:06 PM

Tug hill invitational February 15-17 2014

skimtwashington - 10-12-2013 at 04:08 PM

What are the dates for this?

All official events should be deactivated so people can just 'meet up'...

Kober - 10-12-2013 at 04:30 PM

Deactivated ????
Meet up is fine when you have 10 -20 people .... but its way more complicated when there is 100 kiters and no rules ... Who will let you use land with no insurance and permits ??? Here in NJ I almost got arrested for kiting alone .... imagine what would happen if I have few more friends kiting with me ...... lol ...
... so .... I am fully supporting events and people who try to organize them .... I know how much effort they need to put in to those projects so people like me and you can come and enjoy riding with all those kiters that travel hundreds of miles to be part of it without fear that after first hour of riding police will show up and end this party also making it very problematic in future for local kiters ..... There is major difference between meet up and event .... and lets keep those separated .....

power - 10-12-2013 at 07:05 PM

So is it an event? A meet up? Seems like this event is fading away. Why does the county even have to be involved? Especially when it spans 2 countys??? Its the land owners that will ultimately let you kite or not. I know that certain people have offered many times to go up and cordinate with land owners and look for new kiteable fields as the crops are constantly changing. But hehas not had any offers to do so.
Jan obviously dosent want the job anymore, he did a pretty bang up job i thought, masskiting was going to pick up the ball but dont know if they ever did or if that was more here say then anything. Wish someone would get it together as we need some good events in the north east and this would be a killer spot to do so. I know that they have the event at mt washington, that i hope to make this year, but we have not seen anything like what kitestorm was yet.
Also heard that someone was working on a lake oneida thing. Maybe snowspider? I forget but another killer spot.
Fingers crossed for getting some good events to goto.

On another note is there any word of whats kiteable and whats not up the tug. Would be good to get that information out there for people rather then just have someone kiting where they shouldnt and being banned for the whole area. Ill start another post to try and get the info.

skimtwashington - 10-12-2013 at 07:23 PM

My response was to frustration on the subjects of access... and in getting an event to happen.

My response was 'tongue in cheeS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-. But it was not clear either, rethinking it.

Whatever allows access...I'm for. What ever allows a special event that brings people from all over is great.

It all brings up the point of access...and points of keeping an event going..or starting an event. Tug Hill.... Kite Storm....

Kober - 10-12-2013 at 08:42 PM

As far as I know Jean have been talking with County for a while now .... and there was no one in office who would try to resolve issue ... Now when communication is established .... county is having problems with land owners .... Location from 2012 event is off limits as I understand ... and when there is 1 or 2 kiters riding there anyway it would be crazy to bring whole crew there .... Problem is with getting large area that would make 100 kiters enjoy space .... Last years spot was good for 30-50 people I think and access was privately obtain .... Map of kiteable spots was valid when County was securing access to those lands to help bring more kiters/tourists to the area .... now its gone .... I am not 100% sure about above but thats what I got from many conversations about Tug ..... County was also providing insurance, toilets, garbage removal, plowing parking spots, allowing hot food truck on property that keep us warm 2 years ago with hot beverages when there was 0F temp outside .....
.///// Oh ... well ... I probably should stop now ... I am sure there is someone who can provide solid details.... I am just hoping that Tug Hill Event become official and we have nice big spot to play on ....

.... Now ... coming back to original question ....
Anyone interested in bed in our house for time of Event/Meet up ???

skimtwashington - 1-2-2014 at 05:33 PM

What's the snow cover at the moment?

Watched the video......(and a couple more off Mass kiting site).

Looks typically very cold. Looks typically very fun. Nice cabin in the video. Was that right on site?

chn - 8-2-2014 at 05:55 PM

Anyone driving up from NYC or passing through? Let's carpool!

Kober - 8-2-2014 at 10:11 PM

Skimtwashington ....

Lots of fun with or without wind
Big party on Sat evening in local Pub with big raffle this year ,,,,
Most people are staying in hotels/motels .... and there is few houses rented near the sites with still few rooms available

chris - 9-2-2014 at 06:54 AM

The HQ crew can't make it this year...we'll be at a trade show in NYC. :(

HOWEVER....Christo & Melissa from the New York Kite Club will have our demo quiver to share. It will include the new Montana VIIIs, newly arrived in the USA. Be one of the first to ride them. Even before I do!

Have fun!

bobalooie57 - 9-2-2014 at 06:57 AM

As of last time I counted, more than 50 kiters have registered for the event, the farthest listed from Santa Barbara! Most spots in my local area (in the valley)have at least a foot of snow, but I have not been up on the hill for a while, except for the most NW area while scouting for new spots yesterday. These areas have pretty good snow cover, though it is the light airy kind, that blows around a lot. Right now the forecast is for the possibility of more snow during the week. I intend to check the Hanno lot as well as the Deer Farm today or tomorrow, and intend to post conditions as I find them.

bobalooie57 - 9-2-2014 at 01:11 PM

So I took a drive up on the hill, the Deer Ranch looks to have knee to thigh deep fresh powder, and Hanno's is mostly covered, though it was planted to corn, and some stubble pokes through in the high spots where the snow has blown off. We will likely get some more snow in the coming week, so I will post an up-date midweek.

It's going to be epic
Get your photos and kitetracker ready
As there will be a Kitetracker Comp for distance

elnica - 11-2-2014 at 12:48 PM

Anyone have an extra room or space for a couple? My better half (and better snowkiter) and I want to go. We are driving from Cincinnati OH (11hrs) so we only need a place to stay Saturday and if possible Sunday as well. Don't need fancy accomodations. Thanks!!

Any recommendations on places are also much appreciated :)

Oh, forgot to mention, raffle benefits Lewis County Food Pantry. Many thanks to MassKiting for putting this together!

bobalooie57 - 16-2-2014 at 06:43 AM

We got some great publicity on last night's news!

http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/Watch-Snow--245700391.html

When a non participant speaks this is what happens...

skimtwashington - 16-2-2014 at 07:59 AM

"We're the only ones east of the Rockies where you can kite ski on snow," said Anne Merrill, executive director of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, one of the co-sponsors."

What is meant -or should have been said- is that it is one of the only places to kite ski on THE LAND(not snow covered lakes).

Note to media: Interview participants and not elected officials on any special subject for a better, acurrate, story.

Regardless...still nice to see. Sorry I didn't go. Snow looks ample and I guess you have some wind....so hope all are having fun.

My lake has crappy crusty new snow and think it's slushy underneath. Three days no Kite skiing. Had it good for a week.

Hope to see lots of pics and video(don't take so long this time Konrad!).

bobalooie57 - 17-2-2014 at 09:10 AM

Well, I s'pose you're right, wash, but in Anne's defense, she was only given one take! I was deemed too ugly for the camera, or I would have gladly given the interview! The cool part was when the nice news lady wanted to be filmed while flying the kite, and talking into the camera. I gave her a quick run thru on a trainer(HQ Rush 300 Pro), had it flying, and handed it off to her, and the trainer surprised the tiny reporter, and she promptly crashed! I told her in the interest of brevity, she should just hold the bar, while we tugged the lines off camera, to make it look like she was flying!(magic of TV and all) Here's a somewhat better news interview with the local paper, with video at the end.

Kiters from far and wide make Tug Hill a great event!

bobalooie57 - 17-2-2014 at 09:30 AM

Now seriously, I have to take the time to thank everyone for making the Tug Hill Snow Kite Rally such a success!

I will start with Anne Merrill at the Chamber of Commerce, and Jackie Mahoney, the County Trails Coordinator. These folks helped out with the special road signs, the portajohn, made county snowmobiles available for emergencies, as well as having local ski patrol available(sorry Tim, your lastname escapes me at the moment)

All the great folks at MassKiting, without their enthusiasm and support this event wouldn't be near as great.

The Ridgeview Inn where we got together to dine, party, and have a great raffle, the proceeds of which(over $1,200!) went to the Lowville Food Pantry.

The sponsors that made the raffle so worthwhile!

BEST kites

skimtwashington - 17-2-2014 at 05:09 PM

Bob,
Only good wishes to Anne-of course...not her fault....Media's fault............thus message to them.

Waiting for more pics and videos!

Wind was honking here today for a great day on my towns lake. Still would have been nice to join you all on hills for a change of pace.

bobalooie57 - 18-2-2014 at 08:43 AM

Wish you could have made it, ski. Terrain does make for a great change of pace. I wish I could supply more pic's. I took lots with the helmet cam, but the pic of Kober was taken early Sunday, wind was kind of light at the time, and the best flying was way down the field. You can see the kite in the air over his right shoulder.(just a blob, really) The wind was compressing nicely there, and Zeb was on it, throwing 10 footers, in the light wind! I have a few more that were close ups, and I will post them when I have sorted thru them.
