Muscle Car Trends of the 1970's

Windy Heap - 12-12-2013 at 03:37 PM

Somehow, today I got tangented to a Chevelle car web forum via a web search on vintage Pioneer Super Tuner Auto-reverse car stereos and Jensen Tri-axles 6x9's.............but I digress.

Some of these comments really make my cheeks hurt from ear to ear continuous grins, as 2/3rds of them hit way deep home.

The 70's, Good times.

thought I'd take a few of you down memory lane:

yes, I'm talking about "you" as most of you middle age old farts like me still remember Gas at less than a buck a gallon and can totally relate to these car trends..........

Gas was 56 cents a gallon when i started driving. My 8 mpg Mustang didn't seem so bad then.

Those Jensens were "Tri-Axials" if I remember correctly. I had a Pioneer Super Tuner in the early 80 in my Toyota 4X4. It was the best system I've ever had in a vehicle. 500 watts and 6 speakers in that small cab.

I remember being concerned when gas went over 70 cents. I had a Camaro SS that got about 13 mpg.

1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Convertible-1st car- 12mpg. Was Owned by Betty Davis [my father was impressed...I wasn't!]

Had 8 track in it and came with........Van Halen Women And Children First!!!! Oh yeah baby!

Had 2 holes in the floor boards in the rear passengers foot areas, made for easy disposable of the beverage cans. :saint:

Drove the snot out of that car till it blew the engine, caught on fire and burned on the side of the road....I was more pissed that I had just put $20 in the yank then the car roasting! That's 25 gallons of gas then!

How you guys getting such good gas mileage. My 66 Mustang should have gotten better than your 75 OLDS. I guess i was having more fun with my car at the time.

i was working on cars in the 70`s in many gas stations i remember gas at 47 cents a gallon.
i would work all day on cars and after closing would work on my car and all my buddys cars till way into the night.
there was nothing i wouldn`t do pull engines, trans, rear ends. paint. i could do it all. i used do a 70`s chevy brake job in an hour. replace shoes and pads. cut drums and rotors. repack bearing etc. i loved working on cars. still do. right now i got a 1930 chevy all stock in my garage gas back then was 9 cents a gallon. now i`m looking for 1970 camaro my wifes first high school car, i can`t believe the prices people are asking for rust buckets. i really do miss those days.

first car was a 1970 VW bug.

Lime Green, flared fiberglass fenders, Red Velour interior, mag wheels wide tires.......grins.......yes it had fuzzy dice.

we timed our engine drops, I think we were in the 10-12 minute range, and a skateboard was my engine stand.

1835 cc big bore with dual webers. (dual webers slowed us down some)

Wildcat with a 430 4 barrel. You could put your foot to the floor and watch the gas gauge drop.

I have a Chevelle SS 454 convertible.
I love to see the expression of people's faces when I tell them I just spent $350 on an 8 Track tape player :o

But that just so happens to be the going rate for a restored original AC Delco 1970 AM/8-Track player.

With that engine I might not ever listen to the tape player!

4 barrel carbs wide open (heck we used to have dual quads) and headers with open pipes = song.
