Is there a chart to determine proper depower kite size ?

dangerdan - 3-1-2014 at 10:04 AM

I just spent the last 30 minutes looking for a chart that determines how big a depower kite should for your body weight. Is there such a thing ???
From what I have read on this site most of the estimates are based on experience.

At this stage I'm just curious as to how that calculation is made.

what is your weight and average wind speed for your area

I can tell you for Ontario you'll need almost a full range of sizes and if it's for winter you'll get to use your smallest a few times but not much outside of that - overall more medium to largest are used far more frequently.
So much depends on conditions and what you want to do and even on the same day the guys of same weight might be using different sizes depending on skill etc.
Arcs i use everything from 6m to 22.5m
other depowerable foils from 5m to 12m

again - you are welcome anytime to come out and have a go on various styles and sizes

That's a huge range. Arcs 6m to 22.5m and other depowerable
foils from 5m to 12m.
Looks like there is no easy answer to this.
So it comes down to the wind speed you want to fly in and body weight. As for my body weight (LOL) they don't make a belt or harness big enough for me.

I'm waiting for you guys to fly at Puslinch Lake.

The lake is only a few minutes drive from my house so if I don't have any work i can head over any time. Weekends tend to be busier there so if wind and conditions are good we go to Luther (bigger and no snowmobiles or fisherman). If it's so-so or light wind then i stay closer to home and run over to Puslinch. Many times later afternoon during the week days i'll head over for a short session. I have tons of kites you can try and always have kites for sale too you are more than welcome to try anything - I might even lend you something to try for a week ..... you never know....
Gang heading to Luther tomorrow but after going to dinners with so many sick people over the holidays I think I'm finally getting a cold I'm hoping I can fight off so i don't miss a good kite day this weekend.

Size wise on a regular de-power foil - a 9m is going to be a good average size but you'll find many days when you need bigger and some needing smaller but more often you'll need the larger size.

I tried the calculator, what does the left hand scale refer to

MeatÐriver - 4-1-2014 at 04:32 PM

The letter represents the model and the number represents the size in m². For example B20 = Bomba 20m² or V2-19 = Venom2 19m². The newer Charger2 and Phantom2's appear to be missing from this list.

I am happy to see that the top end for arcs in my weight is 36mph . ( accept the 6m Syn' ? ) I feel a little less wussy.

I have started to feel my personal top end is less . I don't trust the 460 by about 30mph these days even though it has never punished me. I seem to go to my 2.5m profoil before that. :embarrased:
