royal9559 - 17-2-2014 at 05:13 AM

hi,im looking to buy my first kite (it has to be suitable for control bar!!) harness and landboard.Im a 6,4f 220lbs guy.My budget is around 300 uk pounds considering it would be possible to use this eqippment in future for air lifts not just cruising:)
also would like to find out if landbording is safer than jumping with power kite on my only feet.
i understand i will need some lessons and will have to be able to control the kite before stepping on a board.

flyguy0101 - 17-2-2014 at 07:28 AM

Royal- thats about $500 US and that would be a little tight for a kite, harness and board especially since you will still need to budget in a trainer kite to learn to fly first. As for jumping i think its easier when you are moving over static. I would recommend a depower when you start riding on a board. Also budget a little for some body armor and pads. The ground really does come a lot faster, harder, and more often when starting out. If you are afraid of getting hurt (even after lessons) then i would say try it on the water instead of land, that said there is nothing more fun then boosting big. good luck
scott

RedSky - 17-2-2014 at 08:05 AM

Seeing as you have no choice but to wear a harness and you like the idea of a bar, then if I were you I'd save up and buy a depower kite. ....but this REALLY IS NOT a recommended setup for a complete beginner. However, considering your size, your wrists and your future requirements ,this might be the way to go. Something else for you to think about.

If you do take my advice then you and I will simply have to meet up. I'll show you the ropes. I can't let you do this alone!
I'd really like to see some hours under a small fixed bridle kite first. You need to learn the wind window before you put a big kite in the sky.

We can meet at Camber or Purley Way Croydon.

flyguy0101 - 17-2-2014 at 08:29 AM

Royal- you should really take redsky up on that offer! but like he said you need to learn to fly with a small kite first

abkayak - 17-2-2014 at 08:32 AM

wow some offer...i'd take him up on it..it will save you some bucks and brusies..nothing like a friend

Bladerunner - 17-2-2014 at 04:57 PM

Good news ! If you can get together with RedSky he will hopefully be able to give you the REQUESIT time on a smaller kite to learn the ropes. His help will propel you ahead in a huge way and you should go out of your way to meet up with him.

Bad news. You can't have a limited budget in this sport. 300 simply won't be all you spend. NO single kite can do everything. You will notice that we all have more than 1 kite. You are a pretty big guy and depending on your average wind will need a pretty big kite to lift + float you. $$$. Jumping is something you build up to. Not 1st kite stuff.

In general terms and shopping USED expect : 20 for a helmet, 50 for a harness, and 225 - 250 for a depower kite. That doesn't leave you the 150 needed for a board or 20 for elbow , knee and butt pads. Perhaps wrist guards with your background, a kite stake ..........

Work on getting together with RedSky after a day with him you will feel a lot more comfortable about what we are telling you.

I think jumping is easier and safer in motion but learning to send and redirect the kite static with a smaller kite is good preparation.

I am sorry , you gave the impression you were looking at new fixed bridle kites and bars to match on your original thread. Knowing you want to get in motion on a mountain board changes the kite you will want to grow into. Now it will be a depower. If your intention is to move to water that influences what type of kite you will need ! Lessons are about 6-800. Much more than your budget for gear ? Lessons are important before you move to water. RedSky can give you a lot of the instruction needed for land. FOR FREE !!!!

royal9559 - 18-2-2014 at 02:57 AM

OK! :) i am getting in touch with red sky hopefully we meet up and learn something out of it :)
i decided i go for landbording even though it it will cost me more ,
i think ll have more fun out of it and it will be safer too:)
i

Bladerunner - 18-2-2014 at 06:20 AM

You definitely will have more fun riding. Step one is learning to fly. Step 2 is to save up for the ride. Your 300 budget will get you flying. The addiction will help you find the extra money for a ride down the road.

A day ( or 2 ) with RedSky will be the best thing you can do by far. If you haven't yet looked at the tutorials at CoastalWindSports you should. It's a great place for learning .

RedSky - 18-2-2014 at 04:33 PM

royal9559 - 19-2-2014 at 02:27 AM

flyguy and blade runner i understand this sport gonna cost me more and if im going to like (probbably love it:) then surely will raise my budget on it if have to:)) i checked on that tutorial website ,also watching clips on you tube just to get some more info.i have spoken to redsky too.
ps.saving money process already started :D

hi everyone.Recently i had a good couple of hours lesson with Redsky on the sea with a 5m depower kite-he thought me a lot:)really good instructor:)
now im planning on getting my own kite(depower one with control bar) and accesories(second hand) but dont know where to get them from apart from ebay.i am goint to practise with my kite in land where wind blows between 5-14mph.it seems i will feel ok with 9m sqare.could anyone give a little advicqce on where at www. i could get this stuff from(kite landboard control bar and harness)

Bladerunner - 3-3-2014 at 06:15 PM

How great that you got together with Redsky.

You may want to look at kitecrowd for gear closer to you.

RedSky - 3-3-2014 at 08:55 PM

Yeah, I met up with royal on Sunday. Very nice guy.

The wind wasn't ideal for a complete beginner, gusting to 30mph. :D Hey! come on guys, he was in safe hands. :duh:

He had no previous knowledge or preconceived ideas which made it much easier for me.
He listened very carefully and did everything I asked. I was on him like glue and ready to take control but it wasn't needed. He did brilliantly.

We simply practised the wind window on the beach, going back and forth from one side to the other and resting the wing tip down on the ground and letting go of the bar.

More lessons to follow.

Peter, checkout Kitecrowd as Bladerunner suggests.

royal9559 - 8-3-2014 at 03:52 AM

guys, what you think about mid-range(price) Pansh depower kites?i heard they not so reliable...but then cheaper. There is not a lot second hand kites to buy when u want them urgently...but Pansh ( new) is cheap and avaliable..
Redsky, would next sunday(week from now) be ok for you?same spot

Hi royal,

Yes I should be ok to fly Sunday next week. I can't forecast the tides more than a week ahead but I imagine it's going to be another late session and later than last time. Possibly 4:30pm before we can get onto the beach. If there is any wind then we could meet at my inland site in south London and spend all afternoon there if you like.

Thanks for the link.

The '10m Charger' is a twinskin kite and not the same type of kite you flew with me on Sunday.
I recommended a 9m LEI but if you want a twinskin kite then I'd go bigger. 10m may be a bit too small as a beginner for use inland.

I really don't know too much about twinskin kites. I owned and flew the 16m venom but I think you should start a new thread here and ask what other people think of the 10m Charger.

I'd probably go for the 12m Vortex based on size alone.

Twinskin kite -
http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=28016

Bladerunner - 8-3-2014 at 01:36 PM

I wouldn't go with Charger as a beginner Arc. They are arguably the most aggressive arc built . ( Farc wins ) . Look for Venom 1 or 2 or Synergy around 13 -15m if you want a nice intro into arcs at a good price.

If you will be flying alone a lot then the easy launch land of a foil will be a bit of an advantage. Now I have it down I don't hesitate to go solo with my arcs but was TOO dependent on others for a long time.

If you are looking at Pansh notice they don't come with a bar. Add $150 + for a decent used bar and lines. You then are required to match tuning with whatever bar you buy and their kites. I took a long time building and figuring out proper line length for my Aurora. It wasn't all 4 lines equal as you would expect. Unless you have flown for a while it is hard to tell when you have the lines right. The Blaze II has possibly got my favorite graphics on it but I still wouldn't tell you to buy one.

RedSkyis very right about not rushing your purchase. Good for you , asking questions !

royal9559 - 9-3-2014 at 03:20 AM

guys: it would be really helpful if you could give examples of kites and theyrs sizes from those best (affordable ) brands like peter lynn, ozone or maybe H and others if there is any..it would help me in finding second hand kites on line
REDSKY: sounds good, and if no wind then let it be south london too:) hope to see u next weekend

Bladerunner - 9-3-2014 at 03:30 PM

As you see there are so many kites out there that it is real hard to say kite ? will be perfect for you. No single kite does everything.

If you are looking at foils then look at HQ, Ozone, Flysurfer. Maybe Conceptair Smartkite or SkyCountry AlaSCa would come up on a Euro' forum. Both are good kites you don't see much here. I personally think some of the best deals I have seen out there are on Flysurefer Pulse and Pulse II for beginners. The arcs I mentioned, Venom and Synergy are the ones I can really get behind if you go the arc route. Peter Lynn has only recently gotten into the depower foil market. I have not tried one nor do I think they are that cheap second hand yet ?

Most foils come in 3 models. Low aspect like Access , Apex Pulse. More freestyle and medium aspect like Frenzy, Matrix, Psycho and High aspect like Speed that you want to avoid.

You have to decide if you want a low aspect , low lift kite or something a that will lend to better jumps as you progress.

Redsky is probably the best informed about your location and needs than most of us now. I suggest you shop accepting that you will need at least 2 kites. Start with something smallish. 7-9 m depending on your winds and then plan to buy a larger kite to compliment the one you have. Really a 3 kite quiver works best. combos like 7, 10 and 15m are nice. 10m often seems to be folks go to size . Going 2 kite quiver means you have one larger and 1 smaller than the ideal 10m.

All statements above about sizes of kite and quiver are pretty generalized. Only you can eventually work out what best suites you.

RedSky - 9-3-2014 at 08:07 PM

Hi royal,

I was going to go into detail about the different types of depower kites open to you and list all the kites suitable but it may have overwhelmed your choice.

It's really hard to recommend a kite to someone who's never flown one. (except our 2 hour session last week)
And no single kite will do everything as Bladerunner ^ says.

As a complete beginner royal, I think you'll be better off with a Twinskin depower kite. You can crash this type of kite into the ground and not damage it too much unlike the pump-up kites I showed you which may explode! :D

If landboarding is your thing then this type of kite seems to be the most popular and it's auto zenith feature may help you in the initial stages of learning. Auto Zenith is where the kite has a natural tendency to float to 12 o'clock (above your head) and can be useful if you keep falling off your board.

Plus you will find that these guys on PowerKiteForum possess a huge wealth of knowledge and experience to help you on your way with twinskin kites.

Here is a Venom II. It's not going to be cheap but it will be a kite that you will want to keep even when you become a Pro rider. :)

It comes complete with the correct bar and lines in good condition.

>> Peter Lynn Venom II 13m <<

I will link you to other suitable kites as and when they appear.

Bladerunner - 10-3-2014 at 06:58 AM

I am not sure how the market is over there but arcs aren't moving all that fast over here.

I am guessing you can put in a bid for much lower ?

Looks like a nice kite.

As RedSky suggests, the extra work on the ground pays of with Auto Zenith and great gust munching once it is in the sky. The sizeis hard to man up to but once you have it flying you wonder why you worried.

royal9559 - 19-3-2014 at 01:32 PM

hey guys,im looking for a SEAT harness now to my venom II depower kite.i dont want to spend a fortune on it so what would recommend for me?it would be nice if i could use it (in future) for kite boarding too..
just read it is the best idea to go to real shop and test all of them personally...

Hi Peter,
Unfortunately that ebay link is for a waist harness. The harness you used on that Sunday was an >> ION Radar <<

I have found that like most things, the more you pay the better the quality. The Radar is not the cheapest but is very comfortable where it matters!

flyhighWNY - 19-3-2014 at 03:16 PM

Royal I may have a simple harness for you. I used it a few times for snow but I'm not pursuing that in near future. I have another harness for me buggy
Ozone SB $55 incl shipping. Its nothing fancy but works and very adjustable

Bladerunner - 19-3-2014 at 04:55 PM

Congrat's on the Venom !

RedSky is right on about getting what you pay for in a harness. I also have My$tic and love it but they are spendy.

Ozone and Peter Lynn ( and I think Radsail ) sell some very basic seat harnesses at a pretty low price to get going. You will want to upgrade to something more padded and with back support but they will get you going.

It is MUCH easier to launch an arc if it is fully filled pre launch. If you have a blower of some sort I suggest you use it until you get your launch skills down. If not take the extra time to push the air down and get a good fill with the wind.

royal9559 - 23-3-2014 at 01:11 AM

hi guys!
i decided im going for ion radar since i tried it and it felt good:http://www.powerkiteshop.com/ion_radar_harness.htm
Blade, how will i know if kite is fully airfilled (for the first time)?
Could i get some tips for a start "in land"kiting?i suppose i should start with the lowest wind possible( 5m-7m/h) and with manually decrased power of my kite ,right? im asking just in case if i wont be able to see redsky soon and my kite curiosity will take over:))

RedSky - 23-3-2014 at 09:09 AM

Hi Peter,

Not much wind about today and some scattered showers. Must meet up soon.

Excellent choice of harness

.....and massive pathole in my wallet :D

Bladerunner - 23-3-2014 at 12:25 PM

Try and do a search online for an Arc manual.

I kind of missed the Venom line . If I am correct Venom 1 only has a center fill zipper ( like my Phantom ) . Venom 2 has fill zippers on the tips. If you have a center fill I fill the bottom as much as possible. Roll the air up to the top of the kite and then fill the bottom again. If it is tip filled I fill it, push the air down to the far end and then top it off.

I blower is real handy at 1st.

It is full when it is full and looks like a giant mattress .

Even filled you don't hot launch downwind. Launch is done at and angle . Lifting the downwind tip until it catches air. The kite then slips up and into shape sitting at the edge of the window. Look for a video of a launch it is much easier to understand.

CarlTB is a master of arcs from your side of the pond. Search his instructional videos.

Here is a pretty outdated set up video but most applies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dZihDQYA1w

royal9559 - 25-3-2014 at 01:58 AM

Hello Comrades:)
Blade thanks for exxtra info on "how to' hopefully redsky will be able to see me on sunday so i can use my theory in practise:)
i do not have a blower(cant afford it at the moment) so those tips will be usefull..
i have noticed there is a slight issue with the zippers(they like to lock themselves, but i hope wd40 or something will help....

royal9559 - 31-3-2014 at 08:46 AM

hi guys, got my ion radar 2014 harness, not sure though why one of leg straps is not going directly trough ring on a spreader bar when another strap does
ps.after sufficent static training i will start looking after landboard, what do you think about psycho II?

skutter - 12-4-2014 at 09:54 AM

i have a scrub predator 2. im 6'4 180 -190 lbs. its more than the physco 2 but i wanted a longer board with being tall, its not as light but could maybe take more punishment when jumping? but im a way off jumping, i got no one to teach me bar my own mistakes so learning is taking a while longer. have yet to upgrade to depower kites also. i fly hq scouts which i use an old tree climbing harness with if im feeling so inclined.

Bladerunner - 12-4-2014 at 11:31 AM

Judging by the images here : https://www.google.ca/search?q=ion+radar+harness&tbm=isc...

You run the strap up over your spreader as a comfort option ?

RedSky - 12-4-2014 at 02:06 PM

I met with royal at the beach today to help him fly his new (old) 13mVenom.

One of the leg straps on his harness had been threaded through a ring on the spreader bar. It clearly didn't look right and looked worse still when he wore it causing him some serious discomfort.

We undid the strap through the ring and it was then working normally. My guess is that it may have been passed through the ring to help minimize its size for mailing purposes. Either that or someone at the factory was new.

royal' first go on the Venom went very well. I think the auto zenith really helped him. He even did a few scuds and a couple of bunny hops.

The wind was a clean and steady 20mph, maybe a touch more at times.
I did all the launching and landings but I must admit I had some trouble. The first attempt to launch was faultless but thereafter the kite would not get off the ground so easily after landing and it would move back across the window in the hot launch position with both wing tips touching until it was directly downwind and frighteningly in the power!

Sometimes it would double over and bow-tie too.

Was I using too much power on the trim and thus back-stalling the kite ?
Back stalling happened a few times only when I was at the controls because I preferred a bit more power.
I suspect the kite doesn't enjoy too much power on the trim?

or maybe I had positioned myself wrong. I understand from YouTube that you need to be at a 45 degree to the kite for launch. It is possible that I was more or less than 45.

I think I have the landing down but just to clarify and assuming you're flying alone, do you get the kite down close to the ground at the edge of the window and then pop the safety, letting it drift along the ground until it's flagged out?

I exclusively ride with LEI's and I'm unfamiliar with these kites. I need to get this perfected so I can practice with royal before I feel comfortable that he can do this alone. We are both in need of enlightenment. I remember having the same issues with my 16m Venom which I briefly owned many years back.

Apart from this one issue the kite flew great and we had a lot of fun with it. I'm just hoping royal doesn't come on here and mention my quick release test that failed and the subsequent chase for the kite and I especially hope he bites his tongue regarding my loop of death or more accurately my loop of shame. That would be an embarrassing admission to make here. :D

Thanks!
Always learning...

royal9559 - 13-4-2014 at 08:19 AM

i have to say chasing kite down the beach was my biggest thrill at yesterdays lessons :D
lunching it does look very easy while watching it at the youtbe videos|:D

Bladerunner - 13-4-2014 at 04:46 PM

Sorry , I thought that method up through the spreader was odd but found a picture of it that way?

Yes, I launch with my trim about 80% in. Arc thrive on moving on the front lines but watch out for overfly when static.

If the kite is clammed and downwind I walk the edge of the window and the tug front lines to point the nose into the wind.

On launch I just may go a bit more that 45' upwind and pull the front lines gently at the trim strap. It depends on the wind. Less than 45' if the wind is strong and I really want it to stick to the edge.

It is so good you 2 can work this out together. I can't tell you the fun I had alone with an Farc as my 1st arc.

No problem, you're just trying to help which is much appreciated and besides I didn't see your post until after the session, so our mistake.

Thanks for the tips. Tugging those front lines from the trim strap makes sense. I do that with my LEI's but why I didn't think to do that at the time I don't know.

Sorry bro, can't do Wednesday. I can only get out weekends. Let me know when.

Did you like my inverted one eighty downloop power-scud with tuck & roll to swollen knee finish?

Next time we get us some serious airtime. I'll adjust the power strap internals for improved bar pressure, AoA and float.

Make sure the chicken is hooked up and the donkey tooled in, then we can safely activate the QR2 on the 'oh-$h*t' flagout otherwise the parapacking FB boys downwind won't know what hit 'em.

Word up.

hi Gusy,im back here to grab so tips and hints:)
basically ive been using my venom in land for a couple of times.wind was steady 10-15pmh.i often was loosing kites power at zenith which was resulting in my arc falling folded down towards strongest power zone ..Evry time i tried to recover it before it hitting the ground and succesfully it was happening but kite was picking power very qquickly which was obvious and was about to dengerously pull me and probbably going to hurt... so the qqqquestion is HOW CAN I AVOID THIS? i dont want to relunch kite every time it (suddenly) falls of the sky but then dont want to hurt myself once kite gets into strong power zone right beanth zenith..

Hey Peter, long time no see.
There's been very little wind about recently. I suspect that even in a steady 10-15mph it might not be enough to keep you 13m Venom kite from stalling.
You need more wind.

James and I might be out this weekend depending in the wind. You're welcome to join us. :)

royal9559 - 29-5-2014 at 12:11 AM

ok ill watch weather for a weekend...
yet Redsky you would be surprise how big air lifts i had recenetly:))

robinsonpr - 2-11-2014 at 05:33 AM

Royal how are getting on with your Venom? I have a Venom I 13m and a 15m Synergy. I have been spanked badly by the Synergy. I had it out in variable winds (I am inland - Hertfordshire) probably around 8mph gusting to15mph.

It kept dropping into the power from the zenith and then powering up. Sounds like you experienced the same thing? I ended up with a broken thumb :(

I think I know the answer... need more wind.

But, the sheer size of the 15m Synergy, I really don't want to even get it out of the bag in anything over 10mph. It scares the crp out of me.

For now I'm sticking with my new Flysurfer Peak 6m to get me started on my landboard.

I'd be interested to hear how you are getting on!

Paul
