Ice Drill Anchor

hobby_man - 27-2-2014 at 08:41 AM

I use my skis punched into snow at angle to hold bar when launched.
Do people use ice drills and hook loop on it to launch a kite.
I'm having issues doing self launched
What r u using to weight the kite down besides snow? Bean bags?
Thanks

I and many others use ice screws available EMS and REI.

I second the ice screw idea. They are an invaluable tool on the ice. I use the Black Diamond quick set type ice screws. I then tether a strap and caribiner to the screw so I can clip whatever I want to it. They are expensive, but will last you forever if taken care of.

on snow it is the shut tourski pole or if it is icepick , but if the snow is loose the skis really the better

I use 2 ice screws. One I leave at base and one I carry with me.

I use The sand bags supplied with arc by Peter Lynn. I have one with sand in it and one that is empty. If I can , I fill the empty one with rocks or snow. The bags that folding chairs come in make good weight bags.

Dang Blade, that's a great idea! It never occured to me I could use that as a weight bag. Nice!

Leg holster for quick access and secure carrying.

Always have a base anchor and one on the hip. "One to show and one to go".

If you run 2 anchors flag your launch anchor. It will indicated wind speed and direct as well as allow you and other ice users to see it.

When setting the screw run it to the hilt.
Screws are good for checking ice thickness. If you have 8" screw and go to the hilt w/o hitting water, you have at least 8" of ice.

For weights I use sandwich size baggies filled with dry sand. Double the baggies or wrap with duct tape. It can be very challenging
without them launching a foil on black ice. I use four of them at times on the foils to keep the trailing edge from skirting up allowing the kite to launch like a flailing banshee. Ice screw is essential !

There is no need for weights, bags, etc. Just stick an old ski pole in an ice screw, unfold your kite against it, unwind the lines and go. You may have to modify the tip of the pole for a good fit. At the same time it solves the problem at the end of the session especially if it is really windy.

A bit heavy if you are packing in but....I take my cordless drill and a long drill bit (about 12" bought for $5) and drill a hole in the ice on an angle and then I just put my kite stake right in...never had a problem....You can also go to a dive shop and purchase some lead weights...these are great for both the snow, ice and sand to weigh the kite down if you are in a pinch....Really helpful if you are on just winter frozen ground with a buggy since the kite stake wont go in.....

This is a very good method. Many folks do something similar out on the dry lake with rebar. No doubt you can do it in a field or on ice as well .

A pool noodle over your ski pole or rebar makes it easy on the kite and easy to see when out at a distance.

I have taken advantage of others parking posts but for some reason haven't picked up the method myself ?

And what is important according to me , the ice screw in case because his blade of procession part takes your trousers to pieces . and more two other thing if you do not use ski or skate ,- to buggy or blockart .
