New Kite Rider

Hi all completely new to the sport and only started up on a 1.4m HQ Symphony kite a friend gave to me for free to get a feel of it all.

After about 8 hours of practicing control I realized that this kite is much too small for me to jump straight into a big kite so I've been looking at 3-4m kites. I'll probably want to get a 3 line kite? As I might be practicing solo most of the time so I'd like an easy self launch. I'd be using this kite for scudding and a bit of body dragging on a board or kayak.

I live in New Jersey and am trying to buy locally or online. I haven't seen anything on craigslist so I suppose any online site will do at this point. I was just wondering if anyone could help recommend some kites as there seem to be a lot to choose from.

One more thing is in my search for a kite I found a board for sale. A Nobile NBL Kite Board hardly used @ $150, 142 x 42. I know I won't be using it for some time but is this too good of a deal to pass up to invest for the future once I start riding in the water?

By the way I'm 26 yrs old @ 6'2" 195-200 lbs.

greetings. your in the right direction. coastal wind sport ton info and gear , try HQ hydra is a cool starter 3-4m. . units on a bar easy relaunch . as great a deal as u think the nobile is its not. resist the deals and keep steady with practice taking in info, and experience. take LESSONS! try---then buy. "good deals" will cost the most ---->TIME keep looking keep learning. do some reads here it will help

This looks awesome! I'll see if I can make a ride down there since it's a 2-3 hour drive for me, locally I'll probably end up riding around Sandy Hook as it's only 45 minutes away.

In terms of 2, 3 or 4 line trainer kites I hear that they may be different in terms of preparation for real kites. Is there a best approach to this? I got a feel for 2 line on the small 1.4m So I'm guessing with a bigger kite I should go for a 3 or 4 line for better control preparation?

There are a few guys that frequent Sandy Hook. They will all be at WW. Should try and get there tmw if you can. Should be a great day. Just introduce yourself. Lots of great people.

The trick at Wildwood is to NOT BE SHY . Say hello, ask questions and ask if anybody has time to show you the ropes.

You will find everybody super friendly if you are willing to say hello. If you are shy and hang around on the side lines people will be likely to think you want to be left alone to observe.

Getting there and just seeing all the different gear will be an education if it is too windy or something. Extremely good timing for you , if you can make it.

We stay at the Shalimar - 6405 Atlantic Ave.
Generally, you'll find us getting our stuff together in the morning - heading to the beach as the urge strikes.
Tonights winds should give way to something more comfortable by 10 or 11 am, so don't think you need to rush in for breakfast.
As Cheezy and Blade said - don't be shy! You can see and learn a lot here in an afternoon that can make the drive worthwhile.

they are all real kites. the difference(2/3 line) is not much on flying if on a bar , bar set ups give confidence early but lack actual control skills as far as foil is concerned. its just the bar thing, quite limited in performance.

handles require more skill and control of brakes , bar set ups do not. 4 lines will take you down a different route. maybe what u want ?
if ur desires is for depower which mines harness, u have quite few steps to go yet. hook up with the WWBB and sort out alot of details by DOING!

I had to take care of some work stuff today so unfortunately could not make it out to Wildwood today. I'm definitely free tomorrow. Will the event be up and running still on Sunday?

At this point I'll try to learn on anything. My plan is to ride a trainer kite as much as I can, take some lessons, perhaps even hit up http://kitelandresort.com/?page_id=37 which someone was kind enough to email me. Then move over to primarily kite boarding on water with riding on land on the side. Just from what I've read on different sites a 4-line preps you better for depower? but a 3-line seems fine if you'll be taking lessons?

I bet it would be a lot easier to convey these thoughts in person and hopefully someone has some used kites for sale in the area (which surprisingly I find very few internet postings for trainer kites). I'm guessing for my size I should at least use a 3-4m kite but 4m might be pushing it?

I might also be using this trainer kite in the future for kayaking even after I step up to full out kite boarding with a depower. The reason I say this is because me and my friends do annual kayak and camping trips during the summer so it might be fun to mess around with.

I'll also be in Croatia via Poland this summer with my girlfriend. I've read there are a few kite resorts out there too? Hopefully I'll get lucky and our hotel is near a spot.

Yes. Sunday is the last day. People start pulling out early afternoon so I would try and get there early.
