Why no banner ads?

Purely Luck - 30-4-2014 at 05:17 AM

Hey Guys,

I own a few websites and was just curious as to why PKF doesn't sport any banner ads?

They are so simple to get set up and could be making the forum some good money.

If the owner doesn't want to turn this into a "for-profit" type thing then he/she could even use the money to help support events such as Jibe and whatnot.

Just an idea. It seems like it could be a good way to do some really cool things.

I use google adsense and projectwonderful.com on my website. Projectwonderful has more ad potential but can take a week or so for it to gain any traction.

THanks
-Brady

this is "the really cool thing" , why make it so common as to mix with commerce, kinda like putting neon in the library or a church. it happens but apparently not in bobs world, much gratitude for this site and virtual community here

I agree with Phree. Unless it were necessary to keep PKF alive, I see no value and hope we don't go that route. users know where to buy stuff. Retail agents are welcome on this site and are discreet in their sales but active with their posts. I hate it when some banner ad prevents or creates delay for a content page to load.

I second that, I live in the sticks and my Internet is so slow any banners would take forever to load

There is a great extension for chrome called adblock which should help with your slow internet Chrisz. I use it on my work and personal machine. Here is the link.

The value is that ads could bring in money (kind of like the swag shop?). Then PKF could do cool things with it. Like put food on his table, or buy kites and do monthly giveaways.

Curious that you promote the ads then share how to block them.. Not trying to give you a hard time but I agree heartily with the others. Unless it becomes a necessary evil, I'd rather not see the banner ads..I'll accept whatever PKF decides. After all it's his baby and we are just guests (very thankful guests).

yep

it will change yo mind

Bob, the owner of PKF has said here on the forum that ads would never happen here. My hat is off to him for providing us this community.

Bladerunner - 30-4-2014 at 09:40 PM

The lack of commercial interest in this site is what drew me here and holds me. What drove me away from certain other sites. Bob set this up as a way of " paying it forward " and that has remained the focus of this very unique site.

In my experience commercial interests often get in the way.

As mentioned the site is open for folks from shops and representing brands to contribute. Shops and Rep's who contribute gain the respect and business they deserve for " paying it forward " .

I have done it many times before but can't thank Bob Doomwheels Childs for the gift of this site enough!

:cool2:

Thanks for reminding me

Oh ok, I was just wondering.

I myself would have no personal benefit to ads being on the site. (Just a worker bee who tries to scrap together money for more kites! lol)

I was just curious why this site broke the mold for forums

Makes sense.

Thanks for the info!

I hope I didn't offend with my response. It just seemed like you response was sending a mixed message.

Bladerunner - 1-5-2014 at 06:22 PM

This is a unique situation. I certainly understand where your question came from.

I don't think too many folks on here know that this forum is somewhat of a gift . Bob is so low key. :cool2: .

I think he can make a nickel if you buy some merch (link above to the swag shop) but yes - I'm as stunned and proud at the lack of advertising on here. Of course I'm equally stunned at the lack of editorial in kite mags.....they seem to be all ads, with a little sliced meat thrown in to disguise it as a product. A biased product no less.

Vote PKF!

PHREERIDER - 2-5-2014 at 05:23 AM

people like to buy "things"

no one wants to buy a steep learning curve

wanting to learn ....AND PRACTICE ...really dosen't fit the marketing model or match any sales quota data very well. pair this with risk. the equation is odd for honest marketing.

and by the way, kites are like drugs , they sell themselves!

PKF is ad-free forever! Content without commercials. Thanks for the positive feedback. Much appreciated.
