How many miles have you logged in a year to ride?
So far this year I'm on track to break 10,000 miles traveled just to ride with you knuckle heads!

I am about to go on a kitebuggy holiday to Barra, an Island on the Outer Hebrides. It's an 8 hour drive, then a 5 hour ferry. They've got a
massive beach with sand so hard that they land the planes on it instead of building a runway.

The fact that kiting is wind powered and left a small carbon imprint was part of what made me feel good about the sport going in.
I thought I would walk 4 blocks to the beach and be golden. They soon closed the beaches to us !
My reality is that I fly to at least 1 location each year. I drive 6 hours to Sunset 2 or 3 times. Snowkite adds a few 2 - 5 hour trips. Garry point
itself is over 1/2 hour.
So much for my carbon footprint !
That said, kiting has taken me to many amazing places that I would never have enjoyed if I wasn't out there. ( waiting for wind ) ssayre - 22-5-2014 at 09:38 AM

English Bay gets very busy with tourists all summer. The bay looked extremely attractive to beginners with lots of shallows to learn in. Unfortunately
the wind is not strong + only works on a West NW wind. Kites weren't as good . Folks got blown downwind and ended up on very populated beaches ( with
little skill ) . People were often perceived to be in trouble prompting calls to the lifeguards . We respected the lifeguards and the issue.
The fellow in city hall wanted nothing to do with kitesurfing and shut it down . We chose to obey but as usual nobody was dedicated to enforce the
rules besides the lifeguards. Folks with skills rode through the winter months and were left alone. We stayed away in summer to show respect to the
lifeguards.
The new girl at city hall is very open and we have gained access back at the farthest ( dog walking ) beach on a trial basis this summer !
We are protected from waves so our beaches are soft sand and the shallows are wet semi hard pack. Not a great buggy spot.
This means that instead of walking 4 blocks I must drive over the bridge and out to the far point of the bay.

I've driven a couple of hundred miles away to demoknight's beach once. Other than that I use the local parks and schools on the weekends. BR, I try
not to draw attention to myself at all my local spots from fear of the schools or city shutting me down. Especially the arc because of it's size. I
usually use it later in the evening on a sunday. Most of the attention I get is good, but since so little is known about kites in my area, I try to
tread very lightly. I try to remain approachable in case someone wants to ask me about it, but far enough away that I'm completely out of anyone's

But really, I would have no complaints about driving to the different meets if it weren't for the price to drive there. Over 1000 miles in any
direction to find a coast to buggy. It's cheaper to fly, but can't lug a heavy bug on the plane:P Our one vehicle suited to carry buggy and all gear
is a gas guzzler. Jeckyll and New Jersey would be the closest for me at just under 20hrs driving one way. I'll have to do some cleaver pursuading to

Many families make return trips to JIBE because the family members - not the kiters - demand it. (good for kiters!)

I've always wanted to buggy the colossal red sand dunes of the skeleton coast in Namibia.

I been putting serious miles on my Audi since I started kiting .... 2 years ago I decided to get car dedicated for kiting, Chevy HHR Panel ... So
far I put ~35000 miles on it ... When going kiteboarding I travel ~80miles each way ..... to buggy ..(WBB) ~180 miles each way ..... Tug Hill
about ~250 miles.... OBX 500 miles .....
When looking at MPG consumption on Audi ( 24 ) and HHR ( 33 ) and price difference between regular and premium I save about $2000 on gas and
probably about $1000 on maintenance in those 2 years .... so 2 more years and HHR will pay for it self ...( got it on ebay for $6000 ) plus my Audi
shines again with no sand on seats or wet salty water gear ... no need to pack and unpack .... I just jump in and drive to kiting spot .... PHREERIDER - 23-5-2014 at 05:38 AM
