JIBE splashes

markite - 24-5-2014 at 07:16 PM

Seeing Spencer's video reminded me of a few good splashes at JIBE. I only had a camera on Wednesday and captured a few but one good one from Errol (demo knight) hitting a deep one. The one I wish I had on camera was later when Errol and I were coming down the beach at a good speed approaching a tidal stream and there were two couples walking close by and they stopped to watch us right beside the stream. Errol hit it first and it was a deep one and he just raised his arms and whooped as he hit it (same splash like you'll see in this video). I was right behind Errol and moved about 10 feet to the left hoping for a slightly shallower crossing. it was just as deep and made just as big of splash but out of the corner of my eye I saw the people that had stopped to watch were a bit too close for the splash and were raising their arms and ducking to avoid the splash.
Here's a short clip

Holy cow!!! That was a big splash. Congrats Errol LOL. Thanks for posting that Mark! :D

Demoknight - 24-5-2014 at 07:26 PM

HAHA, I just watched that over about 5 times in a row... That looked so much cooler from where you were sitting. I remember that one kinda knocked the wind out of me because we were moving at a good clip.

soliver - 24-5-2014 at 08:03 PM

Awesome!

That's about what that big one I hit in my vid felt like... Maybe it was the same one, lol!!

I was moving between 15 and 20 mph and then came almost to a dead stop!! I don't remember JI being like that with all the rivulets until more recently... Maybe the first few times I went I just didn't venture that far from base.

I debated when I got dressed Wednesday morning as to whether to wear a bathing suit or regular shorts... I opted for shorts and ended up soaked from head to toe in the first 5 minutes in the buggy seat. That first shot in my vid when I took off with the 5.5m RII splashing down was only the beginning of a very wet day.

Later on I figure out that if you go all the way almost to the surf, you don't hit the deep spots and lose so much speed.

Loads of fun for sure!!

Some were fun to go through. Some not so much. I hit one so hard I thought I bit my tongue off when my teeth slammed together. Hard to judge them when they come up so fast. By then its not much time to detour. Kind of survival hang on LOL.

I remember that splash and the other one Mark talked about by the pedestrians both felt like a car crash. I still haven't gone through all the hours of footage I got from Wednesday, but I have several good splashes on my camera.

We wanna see

PHREERIDER - 25-5-2014 at 07:19 AM

nice mark, we have some runnels like that esp. after NE. they can be hip deep! damn big splash by demo

Kober - 25-5-2014 at 07:34 AM

nice ... no need for shower that night .... lol

TEDWESLEY - 25-5-2014 at 08:46 AM

They do sneak up on ya...

"Ohh, that was a deep one" -- markkite 2014

:-)

Looks like you are up north of the staging area; I don't think I've seen washouts that big before on the beach. Did the rain help?

markite - 26-5-2014 at 09:14 AM

most people don't go much further than the north water tower, some go maybe a mile or so north of the staging area and at one point i wanted to see how far I could go north and went another 2.1 miles further than that last tracks i saw. The beach narrowed down and s few deeper trenches but this was in the afternoon after the heavy rain. I saw Errol head north and I asked him if he went beyond my turn mark and he said he went a bit further - darn, that's a game i play with friends back home to see who can leave tracks the furthest at a beach which usually means us bugging into sketchy areas of big rocks or into water.

There was a little more water on the wednesday afternoon following the rain and that's the day I had the Go pro on.
To the south it wasn't too bad and going closer to water to cross with a shallow splash or stay closer to the dunes and avoid them all together but there were times when there were a lot of people so that's when most were hitting deeper water to keep out of the way. My bearings got really squeaky and gritty wednesday - I should have swapped them out.

Here is a capture showing how far north I went and found that deeper trench

The best part of splashing throughout the water holes was that it cooled you off after a hot run! One thing about JIBE is that it can be pretty warm, to me the splash ins were very welcoming!

Great stuff, can't wait till I can return

Yes, the goal is to try and hit driftwood beach, but you need a good wind, tide, and a little craziness to do it :-) I've gotten close; right about where you turned around is the toughest bit. Pines pop up and limit your beach and safety factor, so a nice low tide helps. Don't drop your kite, pick low tide, and get a picture. Here's to making it next year!

Last year I tried heading north at JIBE and there was a huge trench in front of the rock breakwall that grew larger as the beach grew smaller. Unlike your trenches, this one paralleled the ocean. I assume it washed out at some point, but I never found it. When I turned around, I was buggying in a thin strip of beach only a few buggies wide. Ocean on the right, trench on the left. With the setup I had I couldn't hold the required line for more than a few feet before dropping into the trench. I probably wasn't halfway to driftwood; the winds last year never really allowed for it (combined with the weird trench feature).

Sounds like a fun game! Sadly, St. Aug can be easily buggied start to finish; perhaps we'll have to bring the rounded tip into play. That would mostly involve the kite with the best upwind setup; perhaps not.

Kitebaloon, that same parallel trench was there the later half of the week at low tide. It ran right in front of out cottage.

I wasn't sure where driftwood was in relation to where I turned until a bunch of us went to the driftwood restaurant that night and I realized that's where I went past. I like the idea of trying to make it next year - kind of like the out'n back at NABX and there would probably be a few people willing to do the challenge.
I also like the idea of setting up some fun buggy games next year just for laughs and to improve skills, no serious competition....unless we buggy for beers.

Demoknight - 27-5-2014 at 06:08 AM

I am so down for beer buggying...

acampbell - 27-5-2014 at 08:07 AM

Mark, that's quite remarkable that you made it that far north. I remember you shouted to me while passing that your went 2 miles past the turtle rocks and I was like "Huh! Really?".

As we see from your picture, the beach so gently and gradually arcs and gets narrow, the trip turns into a down-winder via the typical ESE that takes you there. You don't realize this until you turn around to come back and realize that you are screwed with an upwind dig on a narrow beach. That Wednesday there was enough East and a bit of North breeze to make your trip possible.

Great job.

Demoknight - 27-5-2014 at 10:45 AM

I just want to point out that I went way past Mark to the North. :P

markite - 27-5-2014 at 10:48 AM

I'm putting together a quick video of the run back from the north - it'll go along with Jason's run back from the south tower. Looking at the video I turned when i was starting to work the kite a bit more and was wondering if I would have enough kite to get going back - the beach was still wide enough, running close to the water my kite was just over the rocks so it was the perfect time and wind to have gone a little further if I had used a little larger kite and maybe a longer line set to park it up high. You'll see in the video it was very quiet up that way after the rain.
..... the video should be up in the next couple of hours.

I wonder what causes it to appear and when? The video Mark posted of the return showed plenty of beach for the run, and no parallel trenches.

Demoknight - 10-2-2015 at 09:26 AM

I just watched my north run video again and I didn't realize it at the time, but I did make it all the way to driftwood beach. I did the full run from the water tower to where driftwood beach starts, 5.44mi one way, and then back to camp for a breather.

Who wants to come with me to do it again this year? :D

soliver - 10-2-2015 at 09:43 AM

Awesome... Think that was me at the very end there. If you watch my vid it was right in the middle where I got up and chatted with you I think.

Demoknight - 10-2-2015 at 02:06 PM

I think you are right. This year I hope to get more time flying my 5.5 R2013. I doubt there will be any 3.5m winds, but if it gets above 14-15mph I will be throwing deadmans on the 5.5 :)

soliver - 10-2-2015 at 04:07 PM

If my RIIs don't sell I may be doing the same thing... Might have to be brave :o

With the low rolling resistance on the JI beach, you'd be surprised what you can do with a smaller kite. On that perfect day last year I hit my PB with a 4m, so don't rule out the 3.5m completely... I'm sure not!

Demoknight - 10-2-2015 at 05:34 PM

Well, I doubt the 3.5 could keep up with the 5.5 unless we get 18mph+. If that happens though, I am more tempted to get the Charger or the 8.6m R2013 out for some jumps. Reactors are amazing in steady beach wind. Even the 3.5 is park and ride around 20mph. I can only imagine it on the Jekyll hard pack.

Oh I know,... I'm just sayin' you can do more than you think with the small kites because the surface is so awesome. I actually loooove my 4m Core on JI in the low teens. If it were up to 18+ I'd have out my Viper S... Super fun little power house.

soliver - 10-2-2015 at 06:47 PM

Plus I'm pretty sure you like to go faster than me

Demoknight - 10-2-2015 at 09:52 PM

I like to go faster than everyone! I must make it out to the flats before I get much older or I will be too wise to do it.
