JIBE Dates 2015 are official May 4 - 8

 Pages:  1    3

acampbell - 10-7-2014 at 10:27 AM

The dates are set for JIBE 2015 as Monday May 4 through Friday May 8th.

These are the same dates we have been talking about since Ted checked the tides a few weeks back but I just got the official green light from the Jekyll Island Authority.

Only change so far is likely having to move the Kite Fort a few yards south to the Great Dunes Parking lot. The restaurant property, which includes the parking lot, is up for bid and they are getting RFP's for 3rd party management. This is a good thing since the state's management infrastructure was not well suited to run a commercial restaurant. In any event the JIA said they "will work with us" on the Kite Fort.

markite - 10-7-2014 at 10:46 AM

Great news

kiteballoon - 10-7-2014 at 11:10 AM

Hopefully this slots into my schedule much better :-) Dates added to calendar.

soliver - 10-7-2014 at 02:31 PM

Awesome sauce!! Hopefully I'll get to come... I'm starting a new job a week from Monday and there's a possibility it might limit my vacation time. If I can't come, I'll meet up with you Angus the week after.... Plus my 2nd daughters birthday, and my anniversary all fall on that week... Wuhoo

3shot - 10-7-2014 at 05:20 PM

Thanks Angus. We're all booked up and counting down the days!! WOOT!!

Spencer, we celebrated our anniversary at JIBE. It was great.

PHREERIDER - 10-7-2014 at 05:27 PM

rocfighter - 18-7-2014 at 08:47 AM

I just put it on the calender. I am looking forward to a great return to this awesome beach. And camping at the camp ground will be great.
Is it to early to start discussing Aunt "B's" Cookies? :D

3shot - 18-7-2014 at 08:56 AM

Mike that would be great!!

soliver - 5-8-2014 at 08:11 PM

Looks like it may be on for us too... Details still pending.

Demoknight - 14-9-2014 at 07:25 PM

The cold weather coming in the midwest makes me get more and more excited for JIBE because I know that it starts right after the warm weather starts coming back :) I am making sure to get this on my calendar.

csa_deadon - 14-9-2014 at 11:02 PM

Wish I could put this on my list for 2015. However, JIBE 2015 is out for me. Don't eat all of the cookies. The guys at SOBB are getting tired of hearing about those cookies. May need to have a care package sent for Spring SOBB 2015.

3shot - 15-9-2014 at 03:23 PM

It was great to meet you and share the sand this past JIBE. Maybe things will work out and you can swing another east coast run!

Demoknight - 7-10-2014 at 01:06 PM

Sorry to hear you won't be there Sean. It was way too much fun making fun of the lady in the car... You have a sick sense of humor and I like that :)

Looks like I will have just enough vacation days to actually take the whole week off, giving me the Saturday before until the Saturday evening after :) I am so stoked about this coming year's JIBE! I had some of the best kiting sessions I have ever had before in this years visit, and I learned several new skills. Not all useful (Looking at you, Deadman turn) but all fun! I hope the weather is as good this coming year, rain or shine. Sounds like Itay is going to be my road trip buddy again too!

flyhighWNY - 21-10-2014 at 05:58 PM

Time to start tryionbg to convince the wife a trip to Kekyll would be better for her and kids than trip to Wildwood! Nicer weathger tons for her and kids to do!! Going to start planting the idea and see if I get to go.

soliver - 31-10-2014 at 04:49 PM

Working on booking a place Wed-Sunday... WUHOO!!!

3shot - 31-10-2014 at 06:49 PM

soliver - 31-10-2014 at 07:57 PM

Ditto kiddo!!!!!

We'll have to have a joint anniversary celebration  kites may or may not be involved... but probably

cheezycheese - 31-10-2014 at 09:29 PM

Boy, up here they call the joint celebration a safety meeting.... :dunno:

soliver - 31-10-2014 at 09:35 PM

somehow I just knew that wasn't going to bode well for me

Even with JIBE being moved up a week, we'll still observe it on the Golden isles. Prolly take her to the Driftwood Bistro. That place was awesome!!! :D

soliver - 1-11-2014 at 06:09 AM

Hmmm... as many time as I've been to JI, I'm not familiar with that one... gonna have to check it out!!!

soliver - 1-11-2014 at 11:44 AM

Hey, for those of you who haven't booked yet, as you are in the process, be sure you mention JIBE or something of the like. The property manager gave a better rate because we are "... With the kiters..."

Cool.

Once we get the deposit out, we are confirmed & nailed down to be there!!

flyguy0101 - 5-12-2014 at 10:45 AM

Just booked the house- cant wait for JIBE 2015 and this year i will be able to kite toooo woohoo

Randy - 5-12-2014 at 11:05 AM

soliver - 5-12-2014 at 11:11 AM

3shot - 5-12-2014 at 03:08 PM

soliver - 6-12-2014 at 07:08 AM

We booked in a smallish 2 BR townhouse that is apparently right on the beach.... Not sure exactly where (looks like about 1/2 way up the coast of the island).

Great price and he cut a small break too:

markite - 6-12-2014 at 07:36 AM

Hey Spencer, You are in with us buddy - that's at least 3 of us side by side. It's not right on the beach but a short walk past two houses and there you are.
Mark

soliver - 6-12-2014 at 08:50 AM

AWESOME!!!

We'll have the JIBEfest Townhome complex!

My wife just asked ... "Are their wives coming?" ... "Yes"... "Ok so I'll have someone to talk to"

3shot - 6-12-2014 at 05:38 PM

Man, this is going to be a great trip. I see that already!!!

soliver - 6-12-2014 at 06:15 PM

We're going to be a complex overrun by little girls... Scott's boys need to be prepared to dress up like princesses

soliver - 6-12-2014 at 09:27 PM

I just checked our paperwork and we are in townhouse #3... Which are you guys in?

I think I see the weenie roast returning, and I think I know where it's gonna be

3shot - 7-12-2014 at 02:11 PM

We are in #4 Spencer. Closest to the Grill:evil:

soliver - 7-12-2014 at 08:19 PM

I apologize in advance for the loudness of my children

3shot - 7-12-2014 at 09:01 PM

 kids will be kids. We live in a single story home, so mine think stairs are the coolest thing ever to play on.

markite - 7-12-2014 at 10:43 PM

Fiona and I are in #2 again - sounds it'll be kite central around our area
Mark

soliver - 8-12-2014 at 04:46 PM

REALLY looking forward to it!

jrhook - 25-12-2014 at 06:48 AM

Turns out I have some soon expiring UA miles that will get me to JAX an hour south. What's the preferred lodging most of the kiters hang at? Does anyone stay at the campground which would be close to the action?

soliver - 25-12-2014 at 05:58 PM

Yea, a lot of guys stay at the camp ground. I have stayed there several times and it's a pretty nice spot. It's at the north end of the island but still only 5 minutes from the beach. Everyone leaves their buggies at the beach park parking lot and they are watched over at night by Chris (pokitetrash) who is given special permission to park his camper (the kitefort) in the lot ... Aka JIBE security. This way you only need to worry about bringing your kites, and yourself.

The only reason I'm not at the campground again this year is because I can finally afford a rental... Plus we have a baby :D

Come on down, it's an awesome event

Michael Gaylan - 25-12-2014 at 08:17 PM

Oh yea! To quote soliver "Come on down, it's an awesome event " it is a blast!

Hoping to make it this year after last years failed attempt. LOL I was in Beaufort I thinnk and just didn't have the "muchness" to want to tackle the weather that was present last year.

All the same, I'm sure we can all meet at the peer and have a great time on the beach.

cheers

Demoknight - 26-12-2014 at 11:38 AM

I stayed at the campground last year, and I plan to bring a tent with me to do it all again. The campsite is wonderful and very clean. The people that run the place are super nice. You can get a primitive tent site (no electrical outlet) for $24 a night there. It is a very short 5 minute drive to the kite launch area. If luggage space on the plane is tight, you can just leave a tent at home and wrap up in a kite at night :)

soliver - 26-12-2014 at 11:48 AM

my only criticism of the campground is that the wifi is iffy in the evening when it's loaded up with people... but yes its clean, nice, user friendly and inexpensive!!!

Demoknight - 30-12-2014 at 09:05 AM

Spencer, think about what you just said. Say it out loud. WiFi at the CAMPground? Who cares! I will be too busy roasting wieners and drinking Yuengling at night!

soliver - 30-12-2014 at 10:04 AM

Errol, it's just a sign of the times... besides, hows a fella supposed to post on PKF after a killer day at JIBE with crummy Wifi?

Just sayin'

jrhook - 30-12-2014 at 11:32 AM

Campers...do ya'll get sites together? I'm booking when I hear from ya!

soliver - 30-12-2014 at 12:35 PM

I wouldn't wait... If I remember correctly last year they filled up and the primitive sites are not expensive at all... I'd say go ahead and book something then post on the JIBE forum and see if anyone wants to share... Be aware though, they DO have a maximum tent per site allowance

Just my 2 cents tho

jrhook - 30-12-2014 at 03:54 PM

Thanks soliver...I'm booked...and stoked!

Hola all........rough winter but starting to recover..........plan to make it Fri and Sat...........if I can't fly I'll assist (buggy and aqua) when and where needed.............look forward to seeing y'all...............

Smeagol - 11-3-2015 at 09:49 PM

Hey all,

Curious, how do most far off folks who would have to fly in typically get all their equipment out there? I can't see being able to easily take a 65+ lb. buggy onto a flight, even if fully broken down and boxed up.

borrow a buggy?
ship it to someone? [sounds expensive]
carry-on? [sounds even more expensive]
miniaturization? [hmm...]

;)

Thx.

rtz - 11-3-2015 at 10:16 PM

If I fly to an event in the future; I will consider using the Fedex hold at location option. Choose one of their stores to ship your stuff too:

http://www.fedex.com/us/office/hold-at-location.html

http://www.fedex.com/us/office/travel-shipping-luggage-shipp...

soliver - 12-3-2015 at 06:35 AM

@ Smeagol, I think CSAdeadon diassembled his, deflated his tires and packed it in a bag to check, and I'm pretty sure mougl shipped his to Angus or someone he knows (in 2012).

The FedEx idea might be good if you break it down into multiple boxes to ship... Maybe?

And there are usually an abundance of buggies you can borrow . I'm bringing 2 to do my tandem set up to give rides to my girls but it'll be free when they aren't doing a ride along. I'll be there Wednesday afternoon through Sunday. Plus I'm sure I won't be riding non stop because this is going to be a family Vacation and I'll need to be spending time with the kids for sure.

Demoknight - 12-3-2015 at 01:04 PM

I also think I will have a new set of wheels put together for my PL Comp XR+ as a backup buggy/tandem for the whole week.

csa_deadon - 12-3-2015 at 05:45 PM

Last year I did breakdown the buggy. If you are flying and bringing your gear there are a few things to think about.

1: What is the baggage policy of the airline you are flying.
Last year Delta limited coach to 1 bag at 50 pounds plus one carry on and one personal item.
Delta gave first class 3 bags at 75 pounds. After doing the math my choices were (in order of most expensive to least)
A) coach - Check buggy frame without wheels and tires, bag 2 kites, 8" tires and wheels, harness, bag 3 clothes. carry on was camera equipement/computer. Personal item was helmet.
B) coach - ship buggy and kite eq.
C) First class - same set up as A.
Option C was by far the least expensive. Option A would have cost $500.00 more since I would have had 3 bags over 50 pounds. Overweight charges are nightmarish.
Option B was only $50.00 more then C
Option C last year would have been around $1000.00, but I have airmiles to use so my first class round trip from Oregon was $10.00

Weigh all the options before looking at shipping.

kiteballoon - 12-3-2015 at 06:41 PM

Make a custom box for your buggy and you may surprise yourself with how easy it is to get it under regulation size. Pbc and I get two pl buggies in one box with weight to spare. Box isn't oversized, so it's one regulation bag.

But yes plenty of buggies to be had.

Demoknight - 13-3-2015 at 08:28 AM

I wouldn't stress it too much. I saw lots of buggies parked last year because several people brought more than one, or they were taking breaks between runs. Understandable seeing as how there is literally 5.5+ miles of rideable hard pack beach. You can ride fully lit at 40mph for nearly 10 minutes before having to turn around and head back.

soliver - 13-3-2015 at 12:56 PM

Ok, I think my math is right... Only 52 days until May 4th!!! :o

3shot - 13-3-2015 at 01:44 PM

Goodness. I can't wait to see everyone again, and meet some new faces!!

Demoknight - 13-3-2015 at 02:24 PM

Confirmed my girlfriend is coming with us down there, and her parents are even renting a room for a couple nights on the island as well! They currently live on Tybee, the island next door, but they used to visit Jekyll when they were younger and wanted to come visit with us again. Her brothers might even make a showing as well. I could not be more excited about getting down there again this year.

3shot - 13-3-2015 at 02:31 PM

That's awesome Errol!! I can almost smell that salty sunset air!!

TEDWESLEY - 13-3-2015 at 07:27 PM

The wife has begun to collect stuff to bring down with us. It's so nice to have her excited about doing JIBE
every year. She would probably force me to go if I baulked! It's tough, but I force myself to bend to her will...
Kite skiing ends soon, then a month of buggy on the Pine Point ME beach we call home to get warmed up. Throw
the family in the van with all our stuff and head to the sunny south for TWO WEEKS! Pinch me.

3shot - 14-3-2015 at 10:03 AM

Same here Ted. I think my wife likes Jekyll more than I do. She was ready to back the day after last year. She's really looking forward to seeing Holly, Fiona, Devin and all the other JIBE ladies again.

soliver - 14-3-2015 at 01:01 PM

Ok, Ted, Jason... I need you guys' wives to do some recon on mine... While she loves JI, I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm gonna stick her with the kids and ride all day... I promised her that wouldn't be the case, but I'm not sure she believes me... Let's work this out

3shot - 14-3-2015 at 01:50 PM

Spencer. Here's my take...

This year the buggy time falls further into the afternoon via the tides. So, that leaves a little more room during early and mid day to do the family thing all around the island. Last year was the same with the exception of low tide being mid day. Every morning we would wander the island and seek a new adventure. By then it was lunchtime. We ate then headed to the beach. Sure we were usually the last to show up, but it worked fine. I didn't want my skin or the kids skin baking ALL day on the beach. If I gave her the morning for family time, she would give me the afternoon with no fuss. Sure its a kite orientated vacation, but its still a family vacation at the same time. Like I said, it wont be so rush rush this year because of the later tides. We can kinda take our time around the island before heading to kite beach.

Amanda bonded well with the JIBE ladies last year. She actually enjoyed sitting under the umbrella chatting while the kids played in the sand and water. Should be even more fun now that your little ones will be there. It will give my girls someone to play with in their age range. Makes it easier for the women to hang out and enjoy each other when the kids are pre occupied. Which isn't hard. I mean... sun, sand, and water :D.

It was a whole week of comradery. NOT JUST KITING! Staying all in the same unit was a blast year. We all saw each other in the morning, noon, and evening. Evenings were special too. We sat on the porches enjoying adult beverages while the kids played under the trees. Or, enjoyed adult beverages out on the boardwalk as the sun set every night letting the kids chase the dusk hermit crabs.

Believe me brother, no ones fears being stuck with the kids more while I "play", than my wife. But, she really got to enjoy herself last year and my overall cool husband/dad grade was an A+.... I think lol.

We're bringing the bikes this year too.

soliver - 14-3-2015 at 03:59 PM

Awesome Jason, you just wrote my itinerary ...

In all seriousness though, I was thinking it'd be just like that... We've got plans to visit some of the historical sites too... Bought a book & everything:D

soliver - 14-3-2015 at 05:15 PM

I was very lovingly reminded by my wonderful wife that the reason "she thinks I'm gonna stick her with the kids and ride all day..." is because I have a history of doing this ... Remember that thread I wrote after I broke my foot about how I need to change how I do kiting:embarrased:

TEDWESLEY - 14-3-2015 at 06:17 PM

The women get on like blazes at JIBE and there's a ton of things to do on the island. We're big on bikes when not
on the beach. Lots of good eating in the area as well. You split the day according to the tide and your bride and it all works out. Since our first visit Holly has signed us up for the house we rent before we've left. I can't think of
any other activity that is essentially mine that she has enjoyed as much. It is a great service that Angus provides
for all of us as our host and ambassador. Sure makes May my favorite month!

markite - 14-3-2015 at 06:25 PM

There is quite a few things to do and we came across the old gun carriages hiking the southern area last year and I want to get to shark tooth beach this year and do some poking around that area too some morning but it's best at low tide for tooth hunting.
Fiona's also really looking forward to it too.

3shot - 14-3-2015 at 07:06 PM

All this talk is really getting my kite blood pumping! Counting down the days my friends. I'm really wanting to give the arcs another honest and proper try now. Been watching the years past videos again all day since its been raining.

markite - 14-3-2015 at 10:38 PM

I've been thinking of what the heck to pack this year. Last year the car was jammed and so many other things I'd love to bring; Fiona's SUP, bikes, plus kitesurf gear plus a bunch of other kites to try out in the buggy plus ? .... Way too much stuff.

3shot - 15-3-2015 at 06:27 AM

That's funny Mark. We were packed to the hilt too last year. Now everybody wants to bring their bikes too :o.

You would think a Chevrolet Suburban would be plenty big enough. :embarrased::lol:

soliver - 15-3-2015 at 06:36 AM

Well with 4 kids and all their stuff plus 2 buggies and all my gear, we've been bringing 2 cars the last couple years... Both of which are SUVs.

You guys need to get trailers

acampbell - 15-3-2015 at 01:06 PM

Word of my demise has been greatly exaggerated. But thanks for the kind sentiments.

My E-mail is back up and domain moved to new ISP. Web content will be up a bit later. It will be non-commercial but with some links to e-Bay for the sale of my surplus stock of merchandise.

I'll start a new thread for updated JIBE information.

Worth mentioning at this point is that JIBE will be sharing the beach with an event for Wind Sports For Wounded Warriors. See ws4ww.org for details about this organization and a great cause. They will be largely on the water except for launching of course, but we can work that out.

More later.

BigMikesKites - 15-3-2015 at 03:41 PM

yea,... its a NAPKA sanctioned event now, ...I bet if you email Morrie he can check if you're current or not... he sent me an email reminding me to pay my dues, so I'm guessing if you haven't gotten an email you're probably good.

Just my 2 cents :D

Winds are up and onshore, air and water temps coming up...........everything coming on line for this years event.............I'll have 3 boards 2 strapped and one strapless if your plan on getting wet........the boards are listed in my sig.....2 MTH customs and one surf board............
