Kite + longboard + parking lot = ?

B-Roc - 23-8-2014 at 05:54 AM

After reading the thread about the NASA power wings that were sold here last week, it got me wondering how fun is it to actually longboard with a kite like the an PW or something else on short lines in a parking lot? Is it realistic to be able to do that inland, on streets and in neighborhoods or just large parking lots or boardwalks by the beach?

ssayre - 23-8-2014 at 07:10 AM

I'm inland and plan on using my nasa wings with a longboard. They are not here yet so I haven't tried it. I plan on making a bar with 6' leaders hooked to the bridles to have at least a little room to maneuver the kite. I do know that my neighborhood street wouldn't work because the houses obstruct the wind too much. The wind on my street usually feels like half of the wind when I go to the outskirts of town. I plan on using paved paths and large parking lots that get better wind. Also, we there are roads in industrial parks and there are rural roads outside of town I might try. It probably depends where you live and how spread out the houses are if it would work inside a neighborhood. In high winds I plan on trying the buggy on 10 or 20' ish lines to see if I can get around light poles and power lines. Shipping from Germany is taking forever so I've had a lot of time to think about this but not try it :)

= fun!

Single skin kites like NPW handle dirty wind fairly good .

They hold there shape a bit longer- perhaps- in lulls before partial collapse compared to FB foils.

More importantly, they can partially or completely collapse and recover quickly....no 'bow tying', no cells to inflate....

I don't know what other kite would be better for such use in these 'constraints'.

To be able to kite skate on a strip of asphalt no wider than 6 feet along the beach..with people passing...doing slalom skate moves is a lot of fun.

If a group needs to pass or any reason I need to pull kite down and get to side, I can reel kite in quick and ball it up against me -by flying w/ only 3 foot fly lines!

I was able to fly my 6m NPW right off the handles in a parking lot on my inline skates. The wind was pretty bad, but it took very little to get rolling and proved it's definitely possible.
I imagine it'd work very well if the wind was only slightly better than what I had.

Nasa wings are great on short lines or on handles. Just a note: you have better control if you fly the kite as a four line with handles verses a two line on a bar. No matter what you are planning to ride on: buggy, long board or whaterver the nasa wing might just fit the bill. It does well in gusty inland winds that is why I fly them. Most of the npw's in my sig. have been made by me and fly great.

What are some good resources for making NPWs?... Just curious as the thought of busting out the sewing machine is occasionally crossing my mind... Esp since I'm all laid up... Stupid boot :(

rofer - 23-8-2014 at 02:05 PM

Susan: Is there any issue flying larger NPW (like say 9+m) right off the handles? I feel like it would be hard to maneuver anything larger than my 6m so close.

B-Roc - 23-8-2014 at 03:40 PM

I would think your body would create too much of a wind shadow when flying off the handles but apparently that's not be case???

kitemaker4 - 23-8-2014 at 06:20 PM

The bigger the kite the longer the bridle lines. I never had any trouble.

There are numerous NPW plans on line if you google it.

Benjo - 24-8-2014 at 08:21 AM

Personaly I always preferred longer lines for kiteskate, much easier to carve out your transitions.

Never got along with the NPdubs.

Good luck

My computer crashed a few weeks ago and I ended up with a new one. So, I have lost all of my my links that I have found over the years since they were in my favorites. Like someone else said, do a google search. I will have to do the same when I have some spare time.

Here's a video I stumbled across. If you didn't want to kite skate before, you will after seeing this. Pretty impressive use of the toxic and various depowers, especially since it all takes place on the most unforgiving of surfaces.

Any recommendations for what type of longboard works best or is it totally a matter of taste? I'm looking at a Landyacthz Tomahawk because I like the ideas of the W shape concave and microdrops and that it is symmetrical like a landboard.

soliver - 24-8-2014 at 10:00 AM

I had been looking a lot and googling but was not having much luck. I've found a decent link through Kite Plan Base with good links to a "how to" but it's still not 100% clear on all steps, particularly bridling. Not to mention the plans shown are from a calculator and do not say the specific square meter size... Only the over all "height" of the kite (chord I think).

I have googled and not had a great deal of luck, which is why I asked if anyone else has a fav. Link for plans and how to.

Here is the one sight I've gotten the most from:

I don't have any recommendations because I haven't touched a skateboard for 25 years, but it looks like most of the videos i've found, they are using similar boards to that landyatchz. I'm looking at on similar on my local cl, but the only difference is it has a drop-deck. Not sure if that matters but I thought it might be helpful for sliding since it would have a lower center of gravity.

Soliver, don't know about the plans but maybe big e would know of a good site?

soliver - 24-8-2014 at 10:49 AM

Thanks ... As tempting as it is to get into the project, I'm probably going to postpone until a later date...

Benjo - 24-8-2014 at 11:10 AM

ssayre,

That video is awesome, I envy those young guys having a runway to kite skate on.

It would be great to be young and have a place like that to learn.

Get hurt, go home and your mum makes you soup.

Unfortunately, If I get hurt my family goes hungry.

If you don't crash, your not pushing yourself.

But, If you don't crash, you don't get hurt.

I'm right there with you Benjo. I don't plan on trying anything riskier than just cruising around.

I am building one right now. This is the first one I made. The bridle is a pain, that is the most work. I got my skate and I will be out their soon.
do a search on you tube for "kiteskateing on the street". It is a very good look at using nsas
wing with very short lines.
