So we were chatting on another thread about the possibility of breaking my top speed (26.6mph) when this challenge was made:

You've got plenty of time. I hit my fastest the first week I got them and haven't got past 20 since then.

So Sean,... ITS ON!

Tomorrow will be my first attempt. A major cold front is blowing into Atlanta and it will be about 30 degrees and blowing 13-14 gusting to 17-18 the initial forecast was showing 20mph wind, and I was sure I'd hit it or soil my pants one, but the forecast dropped off as usual here. I have very limited space on my field close to work, but I'm going to try to make it happen. I could've tried today, it was blowing 15mph, but it was wet out and I was too busy at work. We'll see what happens!

WUHOO:wee:

ssayre - 17-11-2014 at 05:11 PM

No fair. We just got some snow that will keep me from trying. The wind was great here today and looks to be good the next couple of days. It's also suppose to be record setting cold. I might give it a go. There is only an inch or 2 snow. Good luck and be safe.

BeamerBob - 17-11-2014 at 05:17 PM

Nice! I love a throwdown to spice things up a little. Come on ssayre, no excuses. Someone is going to put up and someone is going to shut up. Who's who? ;)

ssayre - 17-11-2014 at 05:21 PM

Hmm. Okay, I will start getting the gear ready. Tomorrow is going to be great wind and I'm not exactly sure how the snow will affect me. Ground will be frozen so it should be fast and fun as long as I don't slip too much.

cheezycheese - 17-11-2014 at 05:22 PM

Pics/video or it didn't happen....

soliver - 17-11-2014 at 05:49 PM

I'll do my best cheezy... But this will be a lunch break session meaning really just 45min of riding. I can photograph the GPS for sure, but not so sure about the GoPro.

Be safe Sean!

ssayre - 17-11-2014 at 06:00 PM

I will. Hopefully the turf is good and frozen. If it's wet and soft at all, I won't be able to use due to possible damage. It was in perfect dry shape last week.

I'll be there w Spenser and bring my camcorder to make it official.;) I will post it on youtube.

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 05:51 AM

Thanks Randy... I know we'll get some decent wind, but not sure it'll be enough to get to 27mph in our limited space at Swift Cantrell, but I sure can try!!!

I intended to bring my GoPro and charge it at work this morning but I forgot!!!!

DRAT

I won't be surprised if I end up being the one who "shut's up"

Limited time, space, and crappy wind are all contributing factors. But hey... I'm gonna give 'er a go!

It's all in fun.

ssayre - 18-11-2014 at 06:29 AM

You should have plenty of time to work on it. I'm going to give it a try, but I have a feeling the snow will cause me to slip and slow me down. It's suppose to warm up this weekend and rain which means my conditions may worsen. However, If I can get the ground to freeze and not snow, I will have as good as opportunity as ever. This normally would be a great time of year for me, but winter decided to come early.

BeamerBob - 18-11-2014 at 07:55 AM

Many of my fastest runs do not feel like I'm getting pulled sideways. See if a little more downwind angle helps with speed and traction.

ssayre - 18-11-2014 at 09:38 AM

My first attempt was fun but not at all competitive. Slipping wasn't the issue, but the 2" of powder and drifts took all of my speed away. Wides might have helped. I could have stepped up kite size but the 2.5 was frightening enough in the gusts. It's negative wind chill and by myself so I wasn't taking any chances. Also, it was neat being hooked to a 2.5 m kite in high wind even if it is a nasa.

Nothing to worry about yet spencer.

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 02:12 PM

I gave it a good try today with the 5.5m. Randy and his daughter met up with me for my shorty sesh and she filmed as I ripped around the field, while he worked on his board skills with his 5.5m NS2 and doing pretty well for his first time riding on grass. He will hopefully get the footage up in a couple of days. Unfortunately, I think the wind had dropped off a bit and I was only able to get up to 19.8mph, which I believe is pretty good for the smallness of that field. I'm really not sure if I'm going to be able to build up the speed to get to 27mph there. The temp was hovering around 30 deg and the wind was fluctuating between 9 and 15 mph (guessing), so needless to say, it was pretty friggin cold... prob not as cold as you Sean, but cold for this time of year in GA... plus the humidity here makes the cold cut through you to the bones.

Had a nice OBE; the kind where the kite just picks you up out of the seat, lifts you a few feet up, and deposits you behind the bug as it keeps rolling... did an up-turn that turned out to be a little too high ... also a really nice side drag... see the pic below

Thanks for coming out Randy, and it was good to see you.

Here's some pics for proof...

Here's where I got pulled sideways in a gust... I stepped it off and it was roughly 24 feet... awesome

and here's Randy and his NS2

Randy just texted me that there is some really good footage, so I'm excited to see it.

markite - 18-11-2014 at 02:21 PM

Looks like you did your attempt down under Spencer! :D

(Photos are displaying up side down) - sorry they display up side down when I view this thread on the iPad but correct when viewed on my work station.

Love the thread like Bobby said good challenge and makes entertainment for the rest of us to follow

Feyd - 18-11-2014 at 03:08 PM

Hahah this is a good read. Go get it boys!!!:D

When you get enough snow We hope to see some of this potential excitement entered into the HWK speed ranking. Might have to have some flavor of special prize just for the throw down between you two.;)

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 04:17 PM

Snow? what is this snow you speak of?.... hey Feyd... GA snow is usually in liquid form :D

Thanks for the encouragement guys!!!!

Where'd you top out at Sean?

ssayre - 18-11-2014 at 04:43 PM

I topped out at an abysmal 9.5. Wind was high teens gusting to high 20's. My 2.5 nasa felt like it would have had plenty of power on a normal day, but the snow made it feel like I was stuck in the mud. I thought about trying the 4 meter but then I would have been grossly overpowered in the gusts. I have the new version of Imovie and I was trying to edit just a short clip to show my conditions but for some reason, I can't figure out how to use the new version.

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 04:54 PM

Wow, Mark... Your right... Viewing this on my iPad and the pics are all upside down... What the cr@p???

The new iMovie is opposite of the old version, your bank of footage is upper right while you cut and paste clips to the bottom half of the screen... I like it better than the older versions. (If that helps at all...)

ssayre - 18-11-2014 at 05:14 PM

Glad you had a good day with some decent speed. I wasn't able to get any speed, but that was the first time I used the 2.5 in the buggy so it was fun. I can't figure out my video so here is a couple pictures that show what my conditions were. It was 15 degrees with negative wind chill. I didn't stay out long.

2.5 snow.jpg - 48kB 2.5 snow1.jpg - 37kB

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 05:47 PM

I bet that 2.6m Viper woulda been a blast in those conditions too!!!

Looks like fun!

I'm really enjoying being stropped in and holding down more umph... I've never had a sideways slide that long.

ssayre - 18-11-2014 at 05:59 PM

I need to get a aqr or at least qr before I start hooking in with my foils. Are you using qr and pulley or wheel spreader.

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 07:03 PM

I'm using the QR... Didn't like the Bullet spreader.

Randy - 18-11-2014 at 07:45 PM

Here's the video. I thought we got Spencer's slide job somewhere on video, but must have cut it by mistake. Maybe he can find it later.

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 08:50 PM

Thanks Randy! Fun day.

kiteballoon - 18-11-2014 at 09:01 PM

Drinking hot cocoa and enjoying the thread. Thanks guys!

Go Go Spencer! Nice footage of try #1. The field looks larger on video than you are running. Are you stuck turning around in the spots as shown? I can feel you going if only I had another 20 seconds of room here! It's screaming at me across the internet through the video :-)

Sean, that looks cold and you had to plow snow to do it. An excellent effort and you are a braver man than me to try in those conditions. On second thought though, I've never buggied in snow.. hmm :-)

soliver - 18-11-2014 at 09:25 PM

Thanks bud,... Yea it's cold... But then it's supposed to be 65 degrees on Monday.

As for riding space, it's one part caution, one part avoiding wind shadows.

If I go all the way south (to the right) there's a pretty big shadow from 4 huge trees, going all the way north (to the left) there's an even bigger shadow from a veritable forest. I could probably go another 30 feet or so but that creates 2 problems: 1 being it getting awfully close to the walking path and trees (with the kite) and 2 the wind shadow from the trees means that if it drops to the ground it is a royal PITA to get back up. Further north might work but for the wind shadow, plus it's the bottom of the hill... Same problems really.

BeamerBob - 18-11-2014 at 11:52 PM

Ok soliver your dew point is only 12 degrees. Mine is 16 in Henderson. But 30 F in the buggy would be cold anywhere.

Ssayre you needed that viper. Don't worry about hooking in for a short ride. That's a peach of a kite and it hurting you would almost certainly be because you told it too. Try just hooking in on the hook in the straights and then unhook for the turns to build your confidence. Don't try this in double the wind-gusts.

Thanks for the entertainment guys!

ssayre - 19-11-2014 at 04:31 AM

Thanks for the tips Bob. I was hooking in no matter what kite I flew yesterday. When its that cold, my hands will freeze in a minute or 2 if not hooked in. The combination of squeezing the handles and my hands being elevated will freeze your hands to numbness in no time, even with decent gloves on.

ssayre - 19-11-2014 at 05:23 AM

Cool video Randy, you captured his obe. Also, is that a standard atb your on. The wheels look large.

3shot - 19-11-2014 at 05:24 AM

Way to go guys! You both win!!

ssayre - 19-11-2014 at 07:24 AM

nope, we won't subscribe to the new age everyone's a winner philosophy. The race will continue, even if I have to switch to skis :D

soliver - 19-11-2014 at 10:19 AM

3shot - 19-11-2014 at 10:33 AM

Spencer. Was stropping into the AQR too much that day? Just curious. I noticed a lil' obe action there. In janky wind, mine is more trouble than its worth.

Randy - 19-11-2014 at 04:18 PM

Quote: Originally posted by ssayre

Thanks. That is my ancient "Terrasailor" (late 90's vintage) which I used with my windsurfing sails for a long time. Has 10 inch tires. The trucks are shot - I had to make some parts to fix them myself. The product is no longer made.

I got a regular atb last spring and started out with it yesterday but I thought maybe the bigger tires would help so I switched. It seemed that it did. Then again, maybe the wind just picked up.

soliver - 19-11-2014 at 04:24 PM

Jason,... I'm finding that flying stropped really does (as they say) help your build down more kite. Thise winds were reasonably big in the gusty spots, and almost exactly the same as the wind I did my first buggy runs with the 3.5m. That OBE only happed because I had the kite too high in the window while trying to turn... The lift got me.

I really just had to tough it out and hold off my nerves once or twice, and now I can't imagine not stripping in. I also have to constantly remind myself to hold the handle with my hands fully under the power leaders, rather than with the leader between my index & middle finger. That really helps when you feel the need to drop the kite to crank on the brakes.

3shot - 19-11-2014 at 04:34 PM

Was just curious if you are preferring the conventional spreader, or the AQR method for the inland janky

soliver - 19-11-2014 at 04:47 PM

I really didn't like the bullet spreader... I use the QR cuz It feels safer to know I can yank that quick release and know I'm good. I don't have it set up with the auto yank strap, but I feel good about how changing the grip can make a big difference in getting the kite grounded in a sticky situation.

3shot - 19-11-2014 at 05:25 PM

I gotcha..

ssayre - 19-11-2014 at 06:59 PM

If work schedule allows, I'm going to try again tomorrow. Snow melted today and is suppose to freeze tonight and tomorrow. Friday is no wind, then warm and rainy for the weekend. Tomorrow might be my only chance for awhile.

soliver - 19-11-2014 at 08:53 PM

If the forecast stays as it is, I might get a try on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, but the forecast pretty much always changes over that much time.

I'll have the whole family out the Saturday after Thanksgiving for tandem rides... If there's wind... Maybe I'll talk wifey into going to the BIG field.

ssayre - 20-11-2014 at 10:57 AM

Now it's a race! 21.4 mph today. That's with a kite that looks like a red and white pillow. ;)

Field was frozen and fast with ice and snow patches. Wind was up and down but enough to pull ahead.

Video and pics to follow.

Your turn spencer.

soliver - 20-11-2014 at 04:29 PM

As soon as I can, I will!!!

Good work Sean!! Glad your surface conditions improved! Give us some more details... Red and white pillow I'm guessing is the 5.5m?

What kinda jank were you flying in?

soliver - 20-11-2014 at 05:29 PM

Monday and Tuesday are both looking VERY promising!

ssayre - 20-11-2014 at 05:31 PM

Yep the 5.5 ns2. The kids have the computer tied up so I can't upload anything yet. I started off by checking my tire pressure before I left. They barely registered so I put about 25psi in them so they wouldn't slow me down before I left which probably made the small difference I needed to get past 20. I tried the wind meter that wg gave me and it was reading about 12 at ground level but intellicast had the winds 15 gusting to 23. Just guessing, I would say the actual wind was lulls of 9 and gusts of 20 with anything between. So pretty janky. The ground had barely re-frozen and there was a thin layer of ice crust on top of grass so the conditions could have been a little better but they were light years better than Monday. I pulled the safety on my fastest run because I was headed to a depression between fields for run off and I was worried I would get stuck. I ended up with a nasty bridle tangle somehow and that was all the time I had. It was awesome conditions for sliding and fun. I was slipping sideways at speed which made it exciting but made it difficult to edge back up wind. My helmet cam footage wasn't as exciting as I had hoped because it didn't have the front wheel in view to see the sliding. I need a rear axle mount like you have.

soliver - 20-11-2014 at 05:45 PM

I'm hoping the forecast holds for early next week... Looking at 17 and 18mph winds, which really doesn't EVER happen here... The wind's been awesome this fall... Glad I didn't sign up for classes til January

ssayre - 20-11-2014 at 05:52 PM

It's going to warm up, rain through Monday and I'll have soggy fields for a week. So it's going to be a little while for me.

If you get 17 winds forecast are they accompanied with gusts in the mid to high twenties? That's how mine always are when we get decent wind forecast.

soliver - 20-11-2014 at 06:23 PM

Yep... 17/18 gusting up into the mid to high 20's... And 65 degrees to boot!

Monday shows rain in the morning, but at 65 with that kind of wind, it'll be dry by lunchtime. Tuesday looks good too, 15/17 gusting to low/mid 20's but about 20 degrees cooler in the mid 40's.

Pre thanksgiving blitz

But also take into account that that's 4 and 5 days away... Very likely to change.

ssayre - 21-11-2014 at 12:17 PM

Video of attempts 1 and 2

I use kite tracker for gps, thats why I was checking the phone at the end and I got to try out the secondary release.

mph21.4.jpg - 40kB

BeamerBob - 21-11-2014 at 01:19 PM

So much drag in that heavy grass. You need something big with some torque. I've never flown a nasa wing, so I don't know how well they make power per size. The principles regarding AR must apply to them though.

ssayre - 21-11-2014 at 01:40 PM

I've found that I'm faster with my nasa in high drag grass than with my vipers. The problem with the vipers is I have to constantly maintain the brakes to keep it in the optimal part of the window. Or I have to work it and if it gets too far in forward at all then I lose momentum. If I get a sustained gust, than its fine, but I still have only been 19 mph with the viper and I flew it quite a bit. The nasa is supreme when you need lots of low end to muscle through high drag areas. I wasn't expecting them too, but on average, I'm going much faster in a consistent manner with the nasas. I'm sure in a wide open smooth area, the viper would kill the nasa on the top end. I consider the nasa wings to be a 5 speed stick with only the first 3 gears. However, I haven't been able to get the viper out of 3rd gear in my fields which is why I prefer the nasa for my specific wind and field conditions every time. I could probably get more out of the vipers by hooking in when the winds up, but I generally only hook in when the winds are more in the middle due to the gust factor.

I give Spencer much respect for slinging his reactors around stropped in inland wind.

Edit: I might also add, that my problem with foils might have more to do with pilot error. :dunno: :embarrased:

soliver - 21-11-2014 at 04:10 PM

Nice work Sean!... That field looks awesome!

I'm only just now getting comfortable stropped in... I actually feel like I can take the gusts better when stropped because I'm taking it in my whole body weight rather than just the strength of my arms... It took getting used to and I really only feel dialed in with it about 2 months ago.

My chances Monday and Tuesday are diminishing

ssayre - 21-11-2014 at 04:30 PM

It was fantastic fun field conditions, I wish I had more time. Basically, the whole time I was moving forward I was also slipping slightly, even at a downwind angle. If it wasn't for the soft layer of grass between the ice crust and the frozen ground, I think I could have gone faster.

What the video doesn't capture, is even when I was barely moving with the 2.5, It was pulling like a truck to pull me through the soft snow.

3shot - 21-11-2014 at 09:12 PM

Awesome Sean!! I'm very impressed with your NASA progression. I've got a lot of catching up to do...

I'm going to give it another go tomorrow, but chances will be few and far between after that. School is coming up and my workload is doubling pretty quick... will share my results afterward of course.

ssayre - 23-11-2014 at 01:39 PM

Good luck Spencer! Hopefully conditions will be good for you. It's raining here. We had decent wind and no rain yesterday but I had too much stuff to do.

soliver - 23-11-2014 at 02:41 PM

Yea, it looks like it's going to be very gusty tomorrow. Tuesday is not so gusty but lighter wind.. I'm going to try tomorrow but if it's too nuts, I'll call it quits.

soliver - 24-11-2014 at 05:18 PM

Ok, I got up to 21.1 mph today.

I got to the park and pulled out the 5.5m seeing Windfinder was showing 11mph. I knew this wouldn't get me there, but I hoped I'd catch a good gust to shoot me up to 27.

The wind all but died, until I had decided I was about to pack up... Then it showed up and gave me my fastest ride at Swift Cantrell park to date.

Got some GoPro footage which I'll post as soon as I can cull throught it.

Yes. I've been wrapped up in deer hunting. All be over January 6.
In the mean time, I'm ordering the 7m NS2

soliver - 24-11-2014 at 07:15 PM

We'll be there Wed thru Sunday, then we head over to Saint Simons Isl. (next Island north of JI) for a week with the inlaws.

Once you're ready, J, join the race!

It's a Janky Wind Race

3shot - 24-11-2014 at 07:53 PM

Need to pick me up one of those E treks. Time to hit fleebay i guess. Sean, we'll be there Sunday through Sunday at Jekyll.

ssayre - 25-11-2014 at 04:16 AM

Jason, I just use an app on my phone. It seems like its accurate although I have no way of knowing. The only drawback is it eats up your battery pretty quick. It would only be practical for keeping track on a short session.

soliver - 25-11-2014 at 05:46 AM

I've always read that the GPS apps are not as accurate as a dedicated unit... but I won't bust your chops for that, ...I think my etrex was a $99 Christmas gift one year.

Randy - 25-11-2014 at 05:30 PM

Spencer,

Sorry I missed your latest run. Was out of town for the long weekend. Back now and ready to roll. Now we just need wind......

soliver - 25-11-2014 at 10:16 PM

Its cool Randy,... I kinda figured you were out of town with the holiday close at hand.

Here's the official attempt number 2 video: (click the pic)

ssayre - 25-11-2014 at 10:29 PM

your definitely kicking my a$s at making videos. Nicely put together and fun to watch as usual.

soliver - 25-11-2014 at 10:40 PM

for me the vids are a big part of the fun :spin:

Randy - 26-11-2014 at 05:42 AM

Really nice video Spencer!

3shot - 26-11-2014 at 10:12 PM

Looking good Spencer!!

ssayre - 30-11-2014 at 07:59 AM

Had a windy day yesterday, so I thought I'd make an attempt. My field had thawed and was soft so I knew I probably wouldn't be able to make a serious attempt. I flew the 4m twister and 4m nasa back to back to make a good comparison between each. Winds were very gusty so I didn't hook in with the twister. To keep it fair, I didn't hook in with the nasa either. My speed with the twister working the heck out of it was 16.6. My speed with the nasa was 19.5. It would have been interesting to have compared them when my field is frozen with less rolling resistance. It's very possible the outcome would have been different. I'm paying for it today, I haven't flown unhooked for a couple months.

Demoknight - 1-12-2014 at 03:04 PM

Sean you better come to jibe. I'm putting my vacation request in now to be there from Saturday till Saturday. If the wind is up like last year, you both will be breaking 30 mph easy. Now that I have the set of reactors I am really itching to put up a small kite on that hard pack to see if I can break 40 :)

3shot - 3-12-2014 at 08:43 PM

OK. So I ordered me a Garmin......

ssayre - 4-12-2014 at 04:42 AM

Alright

soliver - 4-12-2014 at 06:19 AM

Ok, Jason... you've got a GPS, some Nasa's and a few other kites ;), a buggy, and a GoPro ... we know you're hunting until 1/6... so we expect videos of attempts 1 and 2 by 1/7

3shot - 4-12-2014 at 04:32 PM

Lol Spencer.

soliver - 16-12-2014 at 12:07 PM

So I went out for attemp #3... I'll make it short... 5.5m RII ... To high in a turn add a gust and got lofted... Pretty high... Not sure how high but came down and broke my left foot... In the ER waiting room just now in considerable pain

BeamerBob - 16-12-2014 at 12:17 PM

Oh no! Not the outcome we were all hoping for! Hope its able to heal quickly.

Feyd - 16-12-2014 at 12:21 PM

HOLY CATS!!!! Awww man! Good luck with that foot.

Sometime when you push the envelope the envelope pushes back. ;)

markite - 16-12-2014 at 12:50 PM

Oh no Spencer, re-read the thread, you were to break your top SPEED - damn fine print

Sorry to hear and hope you heal up fine. It'll feel weird pushing on a foot peg for a while after so you might want to look at heel straps.

I know quite a few guys that have busted up heels landing in shallows or on the beach hard kiteboarding and i think I purchased the first buggy in Canada many, many years ago followed by the first buggy accident / broken foot a week later (but I did teach that goal post a few things)

We can talk about our foolish moments at JIBE
Take it easy and heal well.

Wow Spence, so sorry man! I have had several OBEs at this point, but none all that dangerous or scary for the most part. I bet this one wasn't all that scary until you hit the ground. I really feel for you man. On the bright side, it happened a long enough time before JIBE that you should be healed by then

Dang man, sorry to hear that. Were you by yourself? I hope you heal fast.

Spencer - really sorry to hear that. Hope you heal quickly. It did look pretty wicked today.

Wow... So that hurt a lot!!!... My heel is broken for sure... I'm in a splint with crutches now until I see an orthopedic or podiatrist to determine if I need surgery or not (praying vigilantly for NOT).

So with all of that being said, I bow out of the race to 27 with a word of caution to all my kite buddies... I didn't think it'd happen to me... And it did, so everyone PLEASE be careful...

Pretty sure I'll be good for JIBE

To answer the questions...

So I was moving along somewhere in the teens mph and decided to put th kite high and turn... However I put it too high and I think I got caught by a gust... The next thing I knew I was in the air, looking down and thinking "wow I'm high and this is going to hurt"... By instinct I pulled the breaks and came down hard on my left heel... Yes it was scary... The high in the air part...

Yes I was alone, but at a public park with lotsa people, but no one seemed to notice... Called Ashli in a panic ...calmed down... I hobbled to the kite smashed it into a wad and put it in the buggy then sat on it and used it like a wheel chair to get back to the rest of my gear... Ashli showed up as I had gotten the buggy on the kite mobile so I drove back to work and she followed... Then to the ER... And had to wait for about an hour and a half. That's the bulk of the aftermath

Spencer, sorry to hear about the foot, sucks, but it will heal. Sorry you lost this little fight, but I am sure you will not lose the battle.

"I'm hoping wifey doesn't put the kybosh on kiting "

I was worried about that for you. That's one of the first things that popped in my mind.

Spencer, sorry to hear you got hurt. Hope you heal soon.
Now, were the hell was the qr I gave you? If your wife and all the kids dont beat you to a pulp they should. Lucky you landed on your feet and not your head.
Dont think for a second I have no sympathy for your pain and your situation, because I can relate. Been there, and have no desire to return.
Let this time be about healing and family. Tomorrow will be soon enough to think about yesterday. At least you have the ability to live and learn, and if you dont, your wonderful wife will help you remember. Hope you dont join the titanium club my friend........
