Snowkiting with too little snow, kite and wind but with boatloads of ambition to go full steam ahead!

You get the snowkite it, you gotta scratch it. ;)

Alright jrhook! that's the right attitude.

It looks like you can fly a kite so you'll be shredding in short order once you have some decent conditions.

If you can get onto a good size lake (frozen of course) with just a small amount of "bonded" snow cover you will learn really fast. The advantage of an open lake without a windward border of trees and tall hills or buildings is that you will find much steadier winds and easier to focus on developing your riding skills. Plus on a flat and "fast" surface you will need minimal power to get going. (oops just saw you were on skis)

I hate to sound like a broken record, but do not underestimate the importance of tuning your skis. If your skis do not glide well you are going to hate life. there are few more aggravating things than having your skis/snowboard ice up while trying to ride. I don't know if you are using a snowboard or skis, but I prefer skis myself. Snowboard is nice when the conditions are perfect...ie nice deep fresh soft snow. Otherwise I find a snowboard to be a bit treacherous on patchy snow/ice conditions. But..to each his own

If you are ever in West MI try to come meet our crew here and have some fun.

pray for snow!

I am based in Muskegon

We ride on Muskegon Lake a lot, some there small lakes nearby, the dunes, some farm fields nearby. It all deends on where the best conditions are on the day of. There are endless places to explore but if you ride on private land it's best t get clearance from the owner...which means a bit of reconnaissance, knocking on doors, etc.

The furthest south I have gone to ride was Holland, but I am sure there are good spots between here and St. Joe. My overall philosphy is to drive less/ride more/minimize carbon footprint. Many times I go alone so a trip to St. Joe is $40 for diesel RT + almost 2 hrs driving each way

We may be closer to safe ice up here tho. Snowfall sort of depends on the storm paths/lake effect path. I know a guy who rode at Warren dunes a few years ago and said it was one of his best days ever. The problem with the dunes is you have to time it perfectly before the wind blows the sand into the snow or the sun heats the sand under the snow thereby melting it. But when you hit it right it's awesome riding on the dunes. We go up to Silver Lake and score up there about 10 sessions in a good winter.

I see snow ...... I am so jealous .... All we got here in NJ from that snow storm was about 2" fallowed by rain ..... never got chance to go out .....
... As above ... riding in clean wind will help a lot ... also firm snow is much easier then pow ... specially with those short skis .... Don't be afraid to sent kite to get more power at first stroke ( on video looks like you kite is a bit too small for those wind conditions )
.... But snowkiting , I think is the easiest of all power kiting sports .... You will be riding in no time ... Get that Apex working ... lol ....

jrhook - 4-12-2014 at 06:43 AM

Kober...yes to all of the above and to what you said. The normal skis and the Apex will come out ASAP! The HQ wouldn't even have lifted up in the wind I had that day so thanks for parting with the Rage 3shot...Lovin it man! Elves are working away on a larger kite for me as we speak!
