Homemade kite

Pyrobee - 29-1-2015 at 10:37 PM

Hi guys first off I am a skydiver and am new to the kite world. I made this kite as a project to learn my new machine. I based it off my hyper performance skydiving canopy.

My skydiving canopy is 69 square feet, for this project I took measurements on the outside of my canopy and scaled them down in half. I had to guess a little for the ribs though. The hard part was figuring out the lines or what you guys call the bridle I think? I have it flying and it has some pull but by no means is flying at peak performance I'm sure.

welcome...way cool entrance looks great

I'm in Florida around the Tampa area.

Reverse engineering a skydiving canopy is quite an undertaking, and it looks like you did it well! It my math is right, cutting the dimensions in half results in about 1/4 the area or 17.25 sq ft ~1.6 sq. meter. A nice size. I'm amazed one could skydive with a canopy that small (69 sq. ft.).

I'm impressed the final result is that it flies. You could get it close and it not lift off the ground. I'd love to see video of it in flight.

greetings , very nice . seemingly flying at the edge of wind window. not much tweaking left to go. good stuff!

Wow. That is awesome!!!

I do special type of skydiving where we take small cross-braced canopies and swoop them over water. Its a newer model called Leia and is made in New Zealand by Icarus. Bellow is a video for an example of what I do and how dangerous it is.... I have a Sensei kite that I stole the control bar from to fly this. Now I need to know where to go from here, I'm thinking 4 line possibly maybe 4-5meter? I just don't know enough about them to possibly design it, would like to get a hold of something so I can see how it is put together. So if anyone has some old pos they are ready to throw away would love to take it apart!

You need to get in touch with big E on here or kitecrowd
You 2could have some good discussions I am sure

IMO...u need to fly a factory type kite to see what these things do by design from the "experts" than u judge yours from that...somebody give this man a 4line to play with

Pyrobee - 1-2-2015 at 07:10 AM

I would love a 4 line to try out, sometimes I wish I didnt skydive as thats usually where most of my disposable income goes too. Big E? Who is that? Has he built kites as well?

He's a fairly prolific, progressive and successful kite builder and has a portfolio of kites with wonderful graphics...as can be seen here-2nd poster on this thread:
