Anyone going to the kite crossing? I did not race last year but I think I will give it a try this year, I don't plan to win just want to finish.

chris - 2-2-2015 at 06:22 PM

I'll be there with a bunch of HQ demo kites. I might race, too. Look forward to meeting you there.

Chris

Chris ... I think I want to work for you .... lol .... Start looking for a place for me to rent in OBX ..... I am so jealous of all yours adventures ..

Cheddarhead - 3-2-2015 at 02:19 PM

This year I'm actually off of work for this:thumbup: Seriously considering going. Six hour drive from Green Bay to Garrison. Never kited amongst so many others. Very tempting. I don't feel like I have the proper gear to be competitive but would enter just to say I did it.

chris - 3-2-2015 at 03:06 PM

Come on down, Kober. :D Just need to help stock your quiver.

Cheddarhead - If I can help you be competitive with a loaner kite, let me know.

Cheddarhead - 3-2-2015 at 04:02 PM

That's a heck of a nice offer Chris!

Chrisz - 3-2-2015 at 05:39 PM

Last year was extremely cold but it well worth it to see 100 or so kites in the air at one time. Adam one of the instructors in our kite club won the snowboard class with a foil last year so really you dont need a race kite to win.

Chris I'll hunt you down, I would like to see what HQ kites you have and maybe take one for a spin.

rudeboysaude - 4-2-2015 at 05:31 PM

Chris.. you're headed out for the event huh? Hope to see you there! Save a demo for me to take for a spin as well.

Feyd - 5-2-2015 at 05:43 AM

Rudeboy surfaces and rears his ugly head! There goes the neighborhood. :P

rudeboysaude - 5-2-2015 at 08:27 PM

I'm like a dormant virus laying in wait to come out and cause trouble! Hoping to cause some at the crossing. You should make the long journey Krug. I hear we might actually get some snow this weekend.

Feyd - 6-2-2015 at 05:41 AM

Snow? I've got my fill of snow here, wouldn't mind some hard surface again. How much snow do they have in Garrison?

Doing the Xing on glass would be sick. The "wind" we had last time I was there would be plenty on glass.

Chrisz - 6-2-2015 at 08:10 AM

The lakes are pretty flat and fast, in Duluth we have about a 3 inch base, Garrison has even less.

You can still see the grass under the picnic table, last year we were snowshoeing over the picnic table. You guys need to share some of the snow!

Hmmmm....

BTW you're order is on it's way Chrisz. :D

Cheddarhead - 6-2-2015 at 02:38 PM

Chrisz - I'm envious of your location! It would be fantastic to live within eye shot of a frozen lake:thumbup:

Chrisz - 6-2-2015 at 09:16 PM

It hard to go anywhere in Minnesota with out passing a lake, there are actually more than 11,000 lakes that are bigger than 10 acres in Minnesota.

I cant believe there are not more people in Minnesota that kite ski, I have 8,000 acres all to myself.

Cheddarhead - 12-2-2015 at 07:57 PM

Ok, so I just registered for the crossing and have a cabin at Twin Pines Resort:D Pretty excited! I'm a Mille lacs virgin, so is there anything that I should be particularily aware of? Is it 100+ kiters starting at once, or are the racers chipped to keep track of times? I'm kinda timid about the large volume of racers and how to not get tangled in someone elses kite.

Feyd - 13-2-2015 at 12:26 AM

It is a mass start but last time I was there it was a fairly low key. It's a timed course so u like a mass start like at WISSA or Kite storm where you literally race head to head you are instead racing the clock. Less of a frenzy as a result though if you can get out of the gate ahead of more people the less people in your way on the course.

When you leave the start you shout your bib number to the officials and they note your time. At least that's how they used to do it.

There is a lot of room on the lake. It gets interesting on the return legs when the lead kites start coming back as the later kites are still heading out. Knowing the right of way rules is important but not everyone does so in some cases common sense and doing whatever it takes to avoid collisions is important.

You'll do fine Cheddar. ;)

Chrisz - 13-2-2015 at 04:53 PM

The mass start was not a big deal, everyone was apread out on the 1/2 mile start line. The biggest problem was hearing the start horn, there wasn't one it froze in the -10 below temperature s last year.

Cheddarhead - 13-2-2015 at 05:46 PM

Thanks for the responses:thumbup: You guys rock!

Chrisz - 18-2-2015 at 11:37 AM

Registered today I am praying for warm weather! It looks like there is 87 people already pre registered, looks like it is going to be a big race!

Chrisz - 6-3-2015 at 09:50 AM

The big day is tomorrow! Wind lools like it is going to cooperate with us, 10 to 15 mph gust to 25 mph, it is gong to be hard to pick a kite size with the gusts. 9 meeter foil would be perfect but I only have a choice between 8 meeter or a 11 meeter kite, I think I will stick with the Apex kites, I want to spend more time on the ground than in the air

I was hoping for a flat lake for the race but it looks like it is going to be a 28 mile mogul race, bumps are about a foot to a foot and a half high on the lake I live on about 2 hours north of Mille Lacs

I think there are 7 canucks registered. At least 3 from Winnipeg. A couple of the guys made the podium in Masters at last months Red Bull Kite Farm in Regina. Should be a blast though. Enjoy.

Great to see fellow PKF users at the event! Congrats to Chris Krug for his overall first place. He was smoking.

Yes Konrad you should make it next year. It was a really fun time! Chris Krug is a total kiting machine!!! I think he was born to kite ski.

Kober - 12-3-2015 at 09:52 PM

Would love to be there .... I need to find someone willing to go for a trip that far out ..... or get winning numbers for next lottery ...
