Break up... wanting a new kite! 4-6m *DEPOWER*

hellnferno - 1-2-2015 at 02:39 PM

I just had a break up.. I have a big saving to visit her in Europe but.. since that happened I decided to find a new kite!

So I have 3m HQ Beamer and love it but the problem is that I cant fly it on some low wind day so I need a little more power for these days.

I have tried 7.1 offroad, flysurfer titan, and Ozone fury but didn't like them. (old kites maybe that why)

Thinking somewhere between 4-6m, maybe more.
If anyone have used one that is not too old for sale, and reasonable price let me know!
Thanks

*Changed my mind with lots of replies, Would like to look for a depower kite to start with.

I have a 5.5m Reactor II for sale... I would say it's an intermediate level kite. It takes a little skill, but is an INCREDIBLE buggy engine. Much more powerful than a Beamer and flies a little differently from a Beamer too. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but check it out.

FWIW, I think the black and red color scheme might be circa 2010-2012... The lines I have on it are only a couple years old though, as they are from a kite I bought then traded kite only for this one.

Thanks! I'll think about it. Keep posting idea/offers.

Selling a 5m Flexifoil Blurr. Once again a great buggy kite, but never tried it in my landboard. http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=29691

Right now I kite with skis and landboard by the way

Would a 4.5 Bullet interest you?

B-Roc - 2-2-2015 at 07:13 AM

any reason you're not wanting a depower (especially if you've got a lot money to burn)?

Demoknight - 2-2-2015 at 12:00 PM

Yeah if you have enough money saved for a Euro-trip, that sounds like depower money to me. A good 8m depower foil from Ozone, HQ, or Peter Lynn would be perfect. You could also check out used Flysurfer foils too.

Hold on to that $...

Maybe you can patch things up:puzzled:?

No....I mean patch up your old kites.....

I'm not sure if I'm ready for depower kites, maybe I just don't have enough knowledge or experience to learn it myself. FB kite was a easy self learning process for me. And I would like to spend somewhere up to 300$

that's an interesting statement and made me think about things a little. before de-power came along we all use f.b. for buggy, snow and land boards, but once depower came along it's rare to use a f.b. anymore because the depowerable have so much more range and are forgiving. Now I like both styles for different reasons but after all this time I think I would say depowerable are far easier to fly than a f.b. on handles for the average person. Just because you have a depowerable it doesn't mean you have to go with a bigger kite with potentially more power, you can always go small and it would be similar to your fixed bridle at max power but when the gusts hit rather than getting punched you can ease off. anyway, it's just interesting to hear people say they are not ready for depower and I often give f.b. kites to friends that have only flown depowerable and they always get spanked by the f.b.

There was a time when I felt that I wasn't ready for a depower either....Then figured I'd give it a shot with a used Apex. Long story short... I don't fly FBs anymore. They may not be for everyone, but if you are on ATB you will not regret going DP.

Thanks markite and MeatDriver, I guess it is definitely time for me to play with depower kite. Would kites like an Access in 4-6m range be great for me to start with then?

Demoknight - 2-2-2015 at 05:09 PM

Yeah, depower intimidated me before I tried it for the first time. If I am honest, they are so much more user friendly than fixed bridle foils. They are easy to fly, and most good name brand depowers control nearly as directly to input as fixed bridle. Especially arcs and LEIs, because of their limited bridles(or lack thereof).

I can equate my first time flying a depower as getting in a hot tub. First you dip a toe in the water to see how it feels. I very slowly side launched the kite, leaving the bar most of the way out and the trim strap about half way in to depower the kite almost fully. Once I got the kite parked at zenith, I slowly rocked it back and forth overhead to get a feel for the steering timing and response. Then I brought it down to 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock to park for a bit. Then I did a high power pass from 10 to 2 with the bar out. Then another high pass straight across, but pulling the bar in to get a feel for how the pull changes as you power the kite up. After that, I did some low passes straight through the power with the bar out fully, and then again while pulling the bar in. I felt really safe knowing that with the bar out, even blasting straight through the center of the window, that big 12m kite only pulled me for a 5 ft scud. With the bar in, it was more like a 30-40ft scud. It is my most frequently used kite now. I love flying fixed bridles, but my 12m Charger is almost a one kite quiver for my area I live. I can buggy with 10mph of wind, all the way up to almost 30mph wind as long as gusts aren't over 30mph. 20+ is well powered and a blast for hauling ass in the buggy or some nice floaty static jumping.

All that is to say, don't be scared to try a depower kite out. Most kite surfers that are new to the sport don't even fly anything at all before their first lesson and get started on an inflatable on day one. They are easier to learn. They are easier to fly, and have a huuuuge wind range compared to fixed bridles. You need only one depower to cover the range of three fixed bridles. I don't know about you, but my three fixed bridle buggy kites together cost more than my 12m Charger 2 and it covers the entire wind range except for the very low end that the 8.6m Reactor works so well for.

hellnferno - 2-2-2015 at 05:54 PM

I see, so those older depower kites I've tried are just different? the 7.1 advanced offroad were weird but I keep getting lots of lift even with bar in or out. Flysurfer Titan 9 was a little bit better than 7.1 offroad but I feels that it is un-safe (big lift)

The area where I'm living in have lots of gusty wind days so. Maybe I should look for kites like Access, Montana, or those newer depower kite that is way more safer?

BigMikesKites - 2-2-2015 at 06:03 PM

sent you an email. I got a couple DePower that might interest you.

markite - 2-2-2015 at 06:38 PM

After flying fixed bridle it'll take a little bit to wrap your head around sizing when it comes to depowerable and then it also depends on what type of kite it is. It sounded crazy to take a 9m arc out in winds where I would have been flying a 3m fixed bridle. Then with LEis the sizing for power is different than arcs and kites like more common depowerables are again different than fixed bridle (you would need to go to a larger size depower to have equivalent power to what you think in f.b.). So you need to think of what wind range you want to fit into around what you have now. So if you were thinking of a kite around a 5m fixed bridle size and you have a 3m kite then getting something like a 7m depower might give you the same range as using a 5fb down to a 3.5fb. So do you want to have a lot of overlap going down in sizes. Or do you go a bit bigger like 9m depower which might give you something similar to using a 7m down to 5m in fb. For your first foray into depower it's probably better to be moderate in size, you'll learn fast but I think you'll want something larger than a 4-6 (possibly 7 ish?).

B-Roc - 2-2-2015 at 07:07 PM

Just an FYI, there will be a ton of overlap between a 4-6m depower and your 3m beamer. I think you were originally looking for a 5m+ FB. I think you should be looking at a 7-10m depower and then save your beamer for higher winds.

hellnferno - 3-2-2015 at 12:53 PM

Gotach, is there any specific kites that could be good for me to start with? IE... montana, access, frenzy, etc..

Demoknight - 3-2-2015 at 01:08 PM

I think the guys with really gusty crap wind have been enjoying the Access for that.

hellnferno - 4-2-2015 at 02:38 PM

Thank you all for your inputs, I have something came up but I will keep looking forward to buy first depower kite in a few weeks!

Cheeks - 11-3-2015 at 09:09 AM

Hellnferno, I think I've got what you need.

A Ozone 4m Access prototype DP foil. Got it from an Ozone dealer. Pulleys, etc. Great yellow and black spike graphics
but without the logos. It's new, 1 or 2 flights.

Got it to train with but haven't had the chance to because my de-power kite buddy is not single any more!
Need supervision for first lesson.

I have a new bar and line set but only a stuff sack for it to live in.

Make me a reasonable offer so I can get a NASA wing.
