Depowerable kites do just what they're called, they'll cut down on the power output of a kite by controling the bar, So you can make a 10m kite pull more like a 6m kite, then when you want the extra jam you can power it back up to the 10m power output.

One word of warning, the depower will only work good at the edge of the window because it works by changing the angle of attack(AoA) of the kite, when the kite's looped through the middle of the window, the full area of the kite will still catch the wind so you'll still get pretty much full power.

They're a little more complicated to set up and fly than the average foil, but once you get it figured out the rewards can be pretty decent. Still haven't found a depowerable as fast as a race kite, and usually they take around 10mph of wind before they'll really start flying well, so fixed power may be better in low winds as well.

If it helps, I made a diagram/ schematic foa de-power rig. It is based upon the HQ Montana.

Although speeding any kite through the center of the power window will give a surge of power, the depowerable foils will not have max power output when doing this unless it is set fully powered and the bar is pulled in. A true depowerable foil does more than just change AoA, with the extensive bridle setup and additional pulleys it also changes the curvature of the wing along with the AoA giving a much larger usable wind range and greater depower than a standard fixed bridled kite. The depower works awesome in all areas of the wind window, not just on the edge. You can depower the kite while it is in the center of the window very easily.

I do agree that the depowerable foils do not have near the speed and power output (per size) as fixed bridled foils and race foils do. Depowerable foils have tremendous amounts of lift and usually one depowerable foil will cover the same wind range as 2 or even 3 other kites.

For buggying I personally like the fixed bridle foils best. For mountain boarding (KGB) or snow boarding there is no better than the depowerable foils (IMO). :tumble:
