JIBE Widows Support Group

Hey I'm thinking that since my wife will likely join me at JIBE for the week, I have NO IDEA what to do with her there when we're not buggying. She is generally low maintenance but I'm thinking hanging out at the Kite Fort with feet up (My Super Hero power) in the recliner is probably too low key for even her.

So I figured to see if folks could put ideas on here that we can all use based on other's activities over the years. I know very little about Jekyll only having been there a dozen times just to buggy...

So maybe if you copy and paste the list as it grows and add to it, it will be a good list for many to use.

My List:

Turtle Center
Bike rides (But to where?)

jrhook - 17-3-2015 at 06:03 AM

You could hang out and watch me take a header off the board...it shouldn't take long!

markite - 17-3-2015 at 06:36 AM

I'm not sure if Fiona will bring her inflatable SUP this year or rent one but one of the things that looked like fun was doing a tour through SSI SUP (St Simons Isl SUP) - they will bring boards etc to Jekyll and do a lesson and a take you on a tour and one of the packages is night SUP with coloured lights under the SUPs

http://ssisup.com/paddleboard-tours/

Fiona rented a bike and daily/weekly rates are very cheap - there is the looping road but many trails that some off of it and there are quite a few places to see from driftwood beach, the abandoned road, the big pier where people fish, the beautiful historical area with shops (by the sea turtle centre), golf and gator wrestling ....

we should also set up a wives and girlfriends kite/buggy training session with some easy kites just to get them flying first

Chris, I said this in my response to your U2U, but there are tons of historic sights to check out on the island. My wife bought a big book of stuff all about the island and there is lots to see. The bike thing is great too; before I had ever even heard of a kite buggy, the first time I came to JI, my wife and I brought a couple of bikes and peddled all the way around the island on the beach which is actually a really fun even if you've done the path.

Theres always the water park :D !!!

Theres also a lot of cool stuff to check out on Saint Simons Island also, which only takes about 15 minutes to get to. (Pier, lighthouse, shopping etc etc.)

acampbell - 17-3-2015 at 08:43 AM

There are over 20 miles of bike trails, and as Mark said, there are some nice easy rides (all flat).

The new retail village behind the new convention center will be done shortly but I do not know how many shops or restaurants will be moved in by the time of JIBE. For now there is the retail village in the historical district near the Jekyll Club Hotel with some quaint shops popular with tourists.

There is a lectured historical tour of the Historic district via little trolly trams or whatever you call them. It stops at key venues so that you can get off and tour some of the historical "cottages". Some of the cottages are galleries, shops or museums.

There are local dolphin and wildlife tours, conducted via pontoon boats in and around the Intracoastal Waterway.

St Simons Island, the next island north, is about a 25 minute drive, and the "pier village" on the south end is pleasant to walk around with plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, parks and so forth. There is a lighthouse museum too. It is a functional lighthouse and you can climb the 109 steps to the wrap-around balcony.

If someone has a car and wants a day trip, we highly recommend Cumberland Island,,the next barrier island to the south. It is a park and requires ferry reservations. The Ferry leaves St. Marys (45-50 minutes south by car) at 10 am and you can return at 2:00 pm or 4:00pm. When you get to the island, a park ranger will offer a waking tour (I think about 45 min) that will take you to the ruins of the Dungeness Mansion previously owned by the Carnegie family. Its a great story and the grounds are beautiful, with wild horses and other wildlife all around. From there you can walk the short way or longer way back to the ferry along the well marked trails, often to the pristine beach (again, usually more wild horses). Every guest we have taken there has absolutely loved it.

Wife Joan and I will be staying out at Jekyll Wednesday and Thursday nights at the new Holiday Inn Resort, just north of Kite Beach. It used to be the "Oceanside Inn and Suites" and was gutted from the inside out to just about the outer layer of paint, with all new construction and fixtures. It looks nice. Rooms at the north end of the property are already booked and occupied, while they are finishing rooms at the south end. It should be all done by JIBE except for the restaurant. The poolside bar will be open, though. We have a dog-friendly room so we can bring the 9-pound rodents.

The brand New Westin Inn, just south of the Convention Center and new retail village, will be open by JIBE and I think that will include the restaurant.

When I think of more stuff, I will add to this list.

My wife would like to come and be with all the other "Kite Widows".:D

Is there any "Hotel Codes" for discounts at the hotels. A JIBE discount?
Would sure help cut the cost if some prefer hotel stay.

I am still looking for people to help rent a condo/villa/townhouse.
Off season rates are still in effect.

My wife actually looks forward to the "nothing to do". I think she could sit on a beach under an umbrella 24-7.

No, in a word. I have been offered this option by island hotels, but our guests are scattered by the four winds between island hotels, mainland hotels, campground, and island vacation rentals. No one group has the critical mass to reach what is needed for a group discount

I've got a great design on the drawing table of 2015.

I like the idea of a kite widows tee.
Any ideas out there in kite buggy land?

You guys with ideas send me the ideas and I'll flesh them out.

Let's make it a contest. Best design gets $20 and a free "Kite Widows" tee shirt
and his /her name on the shirt as the idea person!

U2U is up and running!
