Kites aren't stupid! You are! (Tongue out)

pokitetrash - 21-4-2015 at 12:03 PM

*Heavy Sigh* I had ANOTHER one of those conversations today, this time with some coworkers about Kiting/Kite Buggying.

I'm jacked up about going to JIBE in a couple weeks and NO ONE GETS IT! We were talking about up coming travel plans and so I mentioned JIBE, kiting, etc. Got blank stares...
One guy made the comment..."so you go and fly kites...? Really..??" I know he's thinking big red kite with a tail full of bows... And he had that look like "that's just dumb". Then he made a "whatever floats your boat" comment.

God help non-kiters...

I always have my youtube channel ready to go on my phone. I show off my 35mph+ speed runs on my local beach, and my OBE's, and my JIBE cruising. Haven't had a person yet that doesn't get it after I show them the proof of how awesome. Literally every person I show is amazed and has tons of questions. The first one almost everyone asks is, "Does it have brakes?" :D "Nope. If you want to stop, you just have to throw it into a drift."

Sometimes people are directed out of the realm of normality and beyond the mind of people without vision or adventure like we are. Small minded people think a cruse, bumping butts with 2/4k people on the same boat (hog haulers) is a thrill and adventure.
We would rather "go fly a kite":D

Exactly pokite! Most peeps invision a kite just like you described. Little dollar store Spong Bob kite.

Bladerunner - 21-4-2015 at 03:58 PM

While I try and make it clear that I do what those kiteboarders out on the Bay or that they saw on vacation do but that I ride on land. It seems like more and more people are becoming aware of kitesurfing. The problem is when I talk to them again they refer to kitesurfing like " I " do it.
Other times they confuse what I do with paragliders.

WELDNGOD - 21-4-2015 at 04:28 PM

One dayout at a local community college.I had just finished riding and was packing up my kite. When along comes a "rent a cop" asking me if "I was alright?" and" You just landed here?" It was all I could do to not fall over laughing. I just said I was fine and the landing went well. LOL

I get the Powered paraglider stuff all the time.

BeamerBob - 21-4-2015 at 05:10 PM

"How fast do you have to get that thing to fly the kite?"

Dayhiker - 21-4-2015 at 05:10 PM

"I just said I was fine and the landing went well. LOL"

Now I did truly laugh out loud on that one & even got a few tears in my eyes.

Hey Donnie. When you and Chris ran to McDonalds that day at the gas station, me and Rob were waiting in the truck, some dude saw your buggy hanging off the back and asked where the motor was!! No lie.

riffclown - 21-4-2015 at 05:32 PM

I remember that.

Here's what I did....Bring your biggest kite to work and roll that baby out on the floor or grass...then ask if anyone wants to go fly one of your kites....this got me a little respect at work and made them realize that we are not talking about a CVS delta kite on sale.....

^^ Had that same thing happen to me here a few years ago at a gas station, guy came runnin' up all excited asking what motor I had to power it with...
When I told him I pull it with a kite he didn't know WHAT to say...didn't ask how that works or anything, just got back in his car and left!

That's how I got nixiev, sr71bullet & HotAir flying. Once they grab the handles of a greatkite, they tend to not let go.

WELDNGOD - 21-4-2015 at 07:26 PM

I was pulling my buggy down the beach(Va.Beach), and some guy walking by said" I need one of those!". I asked if he knew what it was and what I was going to do. He says "No,but I bet it's gonna be cool" I think he fried the battery in his phone takin vids and pics.

WELDNGOD - 21-4-2015 at 07:33 PM

Just quit saying "I fly kites" and say instead " I RACE kites" . Cause racing makes almost anything cool.

bugymangp - 22-4-2015 at 02:34 PM

One time a long time ago before I got thrown out of my local park
I was bugging and this guy walking his dog came up to me
And said what's the matter can't get fast enough to take off LOL

soliver - 22-4-2015 at 04:09 PM

I tend to do like Bladerrunner said... "ever seen guys on the beach kite surfing?"... "yes"... "I have similar gear that I use on land to pull me in a 3 wheeled buggy..." then I either show them something from my vimeo channel or tell them about my accident and then they know its serious business.

maybe the problem Pokite is that your coworkers just have stupid kites

WELDNGOD - 22-4-2015 at 04:27 PM

It helps if you have a BEAST of a custom buggy on the rack, in the hitch of your truck. When you arrive at work Mon. morning, for the "girly men" to see.:D:D:D:D

ssayre - 23-4-2015 at 05:15 AM

youtube videos are the only way I can get people to understand what I do. When my friends and coworkers go to florida, I'm always guaranteed to receive text messages with pictures of people kite surfing about 5 miles away.

acampbell - 23-4-2015 at 08:50 AM

I used to carry the buggy on top of the SUV. People would see and start with the "WTF...?"

and I'd just say "That's in case I roll over... I can keep on going"

B-Roc - 23-4-2015 at 09:22 AM

The fewer that understand the fewer that express interest.

The fewer that express interest, the more open, uncontended space for us.

I don't understand why people pay more than face value to collect coins. But I don't care either.

Ignorance is bliss. Works both ways. Leave the simpletons to their ignorant bliss.

Demoknight - 23-4-2015 at 09:30 AM

I have taught two people how to fly power kites since I moved to Chicago. My girlfriend, and another guy I met on the beach one day. My girlfriend's first experience flying a power kite was with my 5.0m Tensor... She fell and I laughed. She handles it like a champ now though :)

But there is a downside to our numbers being small, and that is "our numbers being small". We look like a small number of people doing something that may not be in the best interest of the public. And there is no monetary incentive to permit/license a "small" group. Too costly.
If more people were "into" it. You may see kite zones/parks just for buggying /ATBing.
I guess what I'm trying to say is... We will never get "legitimized" as long as we are few.
