Worst/best places to kite?

djsiryn - 4-5-2015 at 02:21 PM

I'm gonna go ahead and vote for San Antonio Texas for worst for several reasons.
1. high T lines running through all the major parks with open fields large enough to fly.
2. When the forecast calls for 15 to 20mph winds... Expect 5 to 8 tops!
3. power and stunt kites are banned in most of parks.
4. Did I mention lack of wind?
5 refer to number 1.
What are other bad places or cities to fly in? I'm sure this can't be the only place. ;)

I'll except all but number 3. Here in the UK, kite fliers are lucky. For better or for worse we have the North Atlantic to bring us ever changing weather.
It's not a great place to maintain ambitious hairstyles.

My field is fairly large but surrounded by trees and buildings. Summer winds can be frustratingly low despite forecasts saying otherwise. Spring and Autumn are much better. In winter the grass can be wet and the ground muddy thanks to football season.

Here is a typical summers day at my field which I'm sure you can relate to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX7WkB4vmlY

I feel bad that you experience such marginal winds. You're obviously very keen for going so long. Have you thought about a more modern light wind specific kite?

Genetrix do not make light wind specific kites so I doubt they'll mind me promoting another brand. Switch Helium, Ozone Zephyr, Cabrinha Contra to name but three are all big light wind performing kites. I don't know how these translate to landboarding as they are apparent wind dependent from what I've read but they should be good performers if you have the space.

LMAO! I know that look so well. I have had to edit my videos due to cursing the wing...or lack thereof. I'm kinda on a tight budget, so i buy older kites and either fix them up or I get lucky sometimes and find them new old stock. Most of my bigger kites 16m and up I found almost new. My 21m Nemi I found almost unused for 50 bucks. I love that kite but it does scare me from time to time.
Here in San Antonio all the parks have high power lines running through them. The last kite festival they had back in February was canceled due to the wind pointing everyone into the lines. Recently we had local officials ban power and stunt kites (lumped into the same category) in most of our parks. A child was pretty badly injured due to a high speed stunter hitting the child and knocking a tooth out and cutting him with the lines. When I am out on the weekends I have to constantly tell children and adults alike to stay clear of my lines and the kite. People don't realize how powerful these things are.
I do plan on getting a more modern kite and maybe possibly a large foil in the next few months though. I want a Flysurfer 15 to 24m.

south padre island , thats a good spot

there alots of good spots and need to determine patterns for specfic area. even in good spots

alot of times its more about WHEN to go. study temp gradient and pressure you'll know when.

and unfortunately relying on tech media is weak because they have large average areas and may not be specific for geographical differences .

just gotta be there, next best thing a specfic meter you can watch check data and follow and compare actual at your spot.

know layout and terrain between meter/s make differences , a good study of the wind weather patterns is large part of the avocation...not plug and play ....sit watch and learn as nature blows by.

and then theres travel! brazil! tarifa, maui, baja, south africa, hatteras ,gorge, DR/BVI, and south padre island ....SPI that is in texas... and may be considered the most consistently wind spot in america..so jeff howard says at kiteboarding .com ....thats in SPI thats in texas.

now theres good spots and great spots ...seems your close to a great spot! thats in texas

I love flying and boarding in Corpus and south padre. I grew up in Corpus in the mid 80's to the late 90's and started my love of kites when I was 12. My parents bought me a Griffin, a Hawaii Team and eventually a 3 meter Quadtrac foil. The foil was what got me into power kiting. My spot is on top of a hill but has almost no wind for some reason. The rest of the city is seeing 15 to 20 and my hill is seeing 5, maybe 10mph, though I do get some really fun gusts....keeps me on my toes.LOL

PHREERIDER - 4-5-2015 at 07:12 PM

you need foil, and find thermal gradient next LARGE metro area , usually dominant wind direction for season. unfortunately thats means airport.... and to, some weather station meters may be next to building/s or ON TOP . might be what you are seeing, a meter in vortex shots some wacky data sometimes.

djsiryn - 4-5-2015 at 07:16 PM

Yeah, I was thinking that. The closest place to me for wind report is Lackland AFB but it used to be called Kelly AFB. There is a Kelly weather station still, and it seems to be more accurate that Kelly. they usually have a 5 to 10 mph difference. :o I love my LEI kites but, yeah I am thinking of getting a few foils since I am inland now. Price is a bit prohibitive right now though.

djsiryn - 4-5-2015 at 07:18 PM

On a plus note... Foils will not make me exhausted before I fly due to pumping some of my larger ones up. a 19m and a 21m takes it out of ya. LOL!

PHREERIDER - 5-5-2015 at 04:57 AM

you should get a carlton pump. better save the $ get a foil

the big old tubes have comparatively high threshold wind requirements for decent flight and quite heavy compared to foil.

big old tubes need about 15mph to operate properly for use with a something like a catamaran! or an 8 foot human at about #375. when they where designed their scaling was way off....and actually considered mistakes by the industry.

soliver - 5-5-2015 at 06:08 AM

dj, a lot of the older dp foils (some even younger than some of your LEI) sell for an only slightly higher price than some of your LEIs. If I were you I'd consider selling off a couple of your tube kites and picking up 1 or 2 depowerable foils... maybe even a single skin like a FS Peak would do you good in your conditions (though they are more $$ than a standard foil). I think by nature the foils will fly in lighter air because they are typically lighter than an LEI.... Cost wise I'm not talking Flysurfers by any means, I'm talking like used HQ Apex or Monatana or used Ozone Access or Frenzy... I hear both Apex and Access are much better in land because of their lower AR. ...

A good example: I just recently sold a used 12.5m HQ Montana V on this forum for $325 (I think). I bought it on the cheap because it's previous owner said it had a problem, I sent it to Powerzone and had it fixed for roughly $150 and had a really great kite (which would fly in my Atlanta conditions)... I just never used it, plus I injured myself so I sold it.

My Atlanta conditions sound like they are similar to yours... rarely with wind over 12mph, and I have been flying Fixed Bridle foils for 3 years and have had a great time. But I was lofted by a 5.5m just before Christmas and broke my left foot resulting in a lot of mess and medical bills. In re-examining my quiver, I have started paying attention to the "single-skin revolution" that seems to be happening. I recently picked up 2 Nasa Star 3 kites out of Germany and have been having a blast with them because they are SO stable, and will fly in very little wind. ... Not trying to convince you to "go Nasa" but with all of the new single skin kites coming on the market, (many that fly very similar to foils) it is really doing a great work for those of us who regularly fly in cr@ppy wind.

Just food for thought.

By the way, welcome to the Janky Wind Club... you will be receiving a membership card and t-shirt in short time :D

Believe it or not, there is a company specifically dedicated to improving the wind, weather, and terrain conditions where you live. It is a little complicated but I am planning to use them later this year. Give them a call: 1800 GO-U-HAUL.

elnica - 10-5-2015 at 02:29 PM

Joking aside :D. I just posted some NPW5s (single skins) in the for sale. No need to sell any of your kites if you want them, priced super cheap. You can fly them off the bridles so you don't have to worry about power lines or anything.

P.S. San Antonio is better than Cincinnati.
