Where are all the Buggy Events with Acronym Titles?

Windstruck - 1-6-2015 at 11:02 AM

I'm newer to PKF and want to start going to buggy events. I am having a hard time figuring out from the postings where all these super cool seeming events are located. VABBB, NABX, IBX, SOBB, DBBB, JIBE, just to name a few. I live out West (Utah) and want to find events out west. Many of these seem to be on the East Coast.

Where are the West events? Thanks!

soliver - 1-6-2015 at 11:14 AM

JIBE (Jekyll Isalnd Buggy Expo) is on Jekyll Island, Georgia
VABBB (Virginia Beach Buggy Bash) is in the Virginia Beach area, though I'm not sure exactly where
Both NABX (North American Buggy eXpo) and IBX (Ivanpah Buggy eXpo) are on Ivanpah Dry lakebed in Nevada (Near Las Vegas)
WBB (Wildwood Buggy Bash) Happens on Wildwood Beach in New Jersey
DBBB (Dead Bird Buggy Bash)("Dead Bird" because it happens over the Thanksgiving Holiday) is on the coastal region of Texas but I'm not sure where
SOBB I'm not sure about either but pretty sure its in Oregon

Thats what I know

DBBB (Dead Bird Buggy Bash) Is in Galveston, TX - Exact location can change
SOBB (Sunset Oregon Buggy Bash) Is in Sunset Beach, OR , South of Warrenton and north of Seaside

There is a move to start up ABE Alvord Buggy Experience . https://www.facebook.com/groups/216064261858581/permalink/64...

Alvord is a pretty unforgiving place. NOT the type of event you just show up to unequipped.

Hi Steve. I don't know if you have got into snow kiting yet, but there are a lot of folks that snow kite Strawberry Reservoir, and also Skyline. I believe there is an annual event at one of those sites, but I don't remember what it is called. ( It might be Snow Kite Masters, but I'm not sure.) windzup used to be an organizer. Also to your north the Jackson Hole Kiters in WY are always active in the winter.

All - THANKS!!! Most helpful, and exciting to see so much "West" action!

Ivanpah would be a mere seven hour drive for me which is most certainly doable. Psyched.

@ Bob L: I have big dreams of starting snow kiting this winter. I live in Park City and have seen quite a few kites up in the air in various places around town whenever it starts to howl (which is pretty often). I was wondering if Jordanelle Resevior would be good too assuming it got cold enough for long enough for a hard freeze. Certainly closer for me than Strawberry or Skyline (but great suggestions). Thanks much for the good intel.

I love PKF! Such a great and supportive group of fellow adult flyers still giggling like school kids with kites up in the air. I've yet to meet a "grown up" I like. :D

Seeing your avatar, and then all the ski slopes in the Park City area, I was thinking maybe you might have started with snow kiting. I lived near the Tug Hill region in New York, which is known for it's snow and wind in the winter, and the first power kite I ever saw was at a snow kite festival on the hill in 2008. Been hooked ever since, even though I'm not so great at snow kiting, I keep trying. Buggying is so much easier, though,IMO.

WTF is an acronym?

Windstruck - 2-6-2015 at 11:47 AM

@ Angus :P

Sorry, I'll try and use smaller words next time. You must be a real BFD.

Windstruck - 2-6-2015 at 11:53 AM

Bob - I've been staring longingly at those snow kiters for years now. It's only this year that I'm making the transition from static to dynamic flying (sorry Angus, big words again), err, standing still to moving around so it is with high hopes that I will be able to successfully cross over from bugging to skiing under the kite. I'm very sure on my feet with skis on so hopefully that won't be too fanciful (sorry again Angus) a fantasy. My early attempts at land boarding have left me very pleased I wore knee, elbow, and head protection.

Tug Hill sounds great. Get dealt lemons for a winter and craft up some lemonade; I like it!

WTF is a BFD?

Windstruck - 2-6-2015 at 05:09 PM

Now Angus, you know there are strict language rules on the Famly Network. BFD = Big F-ing Deal. Hey, you asked. :embarrased:

BeamerBob - 3-6-2015 at 09:37 AM

Yes angus is a BFD and the organizer for JIBE. He's often the smartest guy in the room and having some fun with you.

IBX is typically held the first full week of April and always at Ivanpah. NABX is no longer an organized event but a small group still congregates at various lakebed locations around end of March till early April.
There is an event forum for all the major events on the pkf homepage as well.

Windstruck - 3-6-2015 at 10:04 AM

BeamerBob - that's awesome! I assumed Angus had some sort of elevated status on PKF but had no idea he was such an esteemed BFD as this to our esoteric world of power kiting. :)

I assume you, he, and any others perusing this thread also read the jest behind my posts. I appreciate that I'm a newbie to PFK and that many of you have years of wonderful history together. I suspect most of us on PKF are just big kids at heart, loving hobbiests that likely seems somewhat strange to a lot of fellow adults. But as I've said before, I've never met a grown up I liked, so to heck with them if they don't get it... their loss. I think soliver sums it up wonderfully in his signature: "She blogs about scrapbooking... what a nerd". :D

Thanks for the background on IBX too; greatly appreciated. I was able to find some of this history out over the past couple of days and found their website:
http://www.ivanpahbuggyexpo.com/index.html
Hopefully I will be able to make it next year as it is "only" about a seven hour drive from home for me.

Your intuition in finely tuned and your sense of humor will serve you well here. You are going to fit in here just great. Can't wait to meet you at IBX or sooner.

HA! Thanks, Steve... I'm glad the intentional irony was not lost and I must add that I rather proud of her... She has an international following, has been published and gets gobs of free stuff by promoting a few choice online vendors (she is on their "design teams"... The team rider equivalent in the scrapbook world). As well she has a YouTube channel where she has a great number of instructional videos and a great number of subscribers. Talk about taking your hobbies seriously.

And Yes Angus is awesome. I've known him personally for a few years now and he is stellar for sure...
