Wind

ssayre - 12-6-2015 at 09:21 AM

Dang. 20 gusting 30 today and stuck working.

Cheddarhead - 12-6-2015 at 10:18 AM

Yep, sounds about right. Never a shortage of wind when your stuck at work:P

RedSky - 12-6-2015 at 03:04 PM

La suckage as the French say. A couple weeks back while at work and forgetting to check the forecast the night before, I was close to tears watching the wind blow the tree tops on a beautiful warm sunny day. Gusting to 50mph all day. I went out the following day in wind and rain gusting to 43mph and this is how I made the 50mph in 7.9sec video but I can't help wondering how things would have turned out if I had seen that forecast, gone to work early and rode those winds. :(

soliver - 12-6-2015 at 03:57 PM

I had one of those days thats the exact opposite... Kids at the in-laws for an overnight, so I got clearance from ground control to go ride... I get to the field and set up... the light breeze gets me moving but just barely.... then typical of GA I get a good WHAMO of a gust and am cruising super fast just long enough to realize I'm too close to the chain link fence... and as I'm in the process of resetting the gear the rain hits... its hard to fly a wet rag,... especially when the wind is completely gone after the rain passes ... hey, at least I got to ride right?

Windstruck - 12-6-2015 at 07:03 PM

Spenser - I feel your pain brother. A couple of days ago I was watching beautiful wind all afternoon but couldn't get out until about 6 or so. I got out, got all set up and the wind just died. So dead the dandelion fluff was swirling to and fro!

That's exactly what happened to me yesterday and twice last week with the buggy. Wind was forecast to be decent then I was skunked. Very frustrating. I had a couple good gusts of wind that would tease me into thinking if I just waited a little longer, the wind would show up. Hour and half later, still crawling and had to give it up.

1oldkid - 15-6-2015 at 06:26 AM

I call them "teaser winds" here...
We get them a lot...or we get punchy, gusty stuff that really keeps you on your toes!

ssayre - 18-6-2015 at 11:29 AM

Faaarrrrkkk, 4th time in a row skunked trying to buggy at my more remote location. I might as give up and switch back to longboard.

Windstruck - 18-6-2015 at 12:25 PM

Keep the faith SSAYRE! Good winds come to those who wait (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

Windstruck - 18-6-2015 at 12:30 PM

SSAYRE - You've got a GREAT quiver in your signature line, no doubt about it. It could be a tad shy on the big end. I've had a bunch of decent buggy sessions lately with my 12M Peak2 in what I swear was no more than 3-5 knots winds with rare "gusts" to 7-8. Throwing up a big single skin DP like that really seems to be the ticket lately. I wish I had the 10+ knots for my Lynx's but those sorts of winds just aren't materializing for me, nor for you seemingly.

I know, I know, $$$$ and more $$$$. :(

ssayre - 18-6-2015 at 01:34 PM

@randy: Thanks :D

@Steve: Yes your right, I could benefit greatly from a light wind kite and that's on the agenda. I'm surprised how low my 6m gets me going. I just need between 12ish wind up to low 20's is my threshold. I'm waiting on a used deal to come along on a 9 or 12. And your also right about single skin depower. They work very well for variable light wind. I actually should have put up the 7m nasa star but I thought I had the wind for the peak 6.

soliver - 19-6-2015 at 11:41 AM

Summer wind is poop... I'm probably going to just hold off till fall!... esp. here in ATL, it's hard enough to get good wind during the GOOD seasons!!!

Windstruck - 19-6-2015 at 11:53 AM

Bummer Spenser - Maybe you could get a custom 30M NPW up make out of rice paper and spit run off of dental floss lines and bridles. :o

jrhook - 19-6-2015 at 12:03 PM

Swesting...you're making want one of those 12m Peaks really, really bad! I'm sitting here right now with that exact wind blowing and I'm just trying to get a board to roll me across a nicely mowed 3 acres of grass! Where is the best place to buy one of those babies?

Windstruck - 19-6-2015 at 12:36 PM

Jrhook - have you tried placing a post on the PKF "Wanted" forum? I've had great success both there and on the For Sale side. That's how I got my P2.

You've got some big stones to contemplate launching that much sale on a board. DP or no DP, there s a pretty strong power surge when that kite gets busy. To date I've only used my big fella with a buggy. I've gotten some pretty exhilarating power build ups which I can steer out of with the bug. Pretty fun really but I would be thinking about that on a board. Saying all that I have no idea of coarse what kind of boarded you are. It's out of my league for my board is all I'm saying.

ssayre - 19-6-2015 at 12:41 PM

Buggies are awesome. Really let's you ride more challenging terrain and handle more power. Now if I can just get some wind this weekend

jrhook - 19-6-2015 at 02:23 PM

Got it...the learning curve shouldn't include a face plant and 30 yard drag across the field... Still looking for the next best step up though! Thanks!

ssayre - 3-9-2015 at 06:48 AM

Who has wind lately? heat wave currently and through the weekend with no wind forecast. It's killing me because our ground is finally dry and hard which helps keep speed up. Fall is right around the corner so hopefully wind will be here soon!

abkayak - 3-9-2015 at 07:08 AM

got no complaints on long island
sorry

No apology needed, I'm glad someone has wind. I'll quit whining, wind will be here. In the meantime, I'll tinker on the buggy.

Windstruck - 3-9-2015 at 08:18 AM

Wind forecast for Saturday is 20-30 mph! Small kite heaven.

ssayre - 3-9-2015 at 08:25 AM

Fark U windstruck :P :D

Hope you get to use that new 4 meter

Windstruck - 3-9-2015 at 08:32 AM

Great idea Sean, but it won't make it in time! If it actually really blows hard I plan to try the 6m P2 and the 2.5/3.2m NS3s. :P

Had to look them up....

CPDRC Dancing Inmates or the CPDRC dancers is a collective of prison inmates in Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC), a maximum security prison in Cebu, in Cebu Province, Philippines where the prisoners perform dance routines as part of their daily exercise and rehabilitation, and many of their performances are filmed and released online, making them a popular feature among fans and veritable online celebrities.

I'm sure this really keep tension in the yard down. I mean I haven't seen one dancer shank another since West Side Story... :dunno:
Just goes to show that all those inmates could have done something different with their lives with a little guidance.

Windstruck - 3-9-2015 at 03:25 PM

4m P2 expected in Saturday's post!!!! :wee:

TEDWESLEY - 4-9-2015 at 04:50 AM

When my 4m arrived it came with a month long kite curse. Hope you will have better luck!

Windstruck - 6-9-2015 at 02:39 PM

Wind came to the Wasatch mountains with a vengeance yesterday! For about four hours mid-day winds were consistently 20+ mph with gusts into the low 30s. There was a front moving in and the weather got beautifully blustery.

I had just gotten my "wasp on a string" (4.0m Peak-2) in the mail that morning and got it up in the air along with the smallest kite in my quiver, a 2.5m NS3. You'll see that the NS3 is getting flown from a custom bar I made up with adjustable width settings. I had it at the most narrow setting (50 cm) to damp the kite down a tad (normal Born-Kite bar is about 55 cm).

As a super cool side note, the Peak-2 in the video is the same one Chris used for his high-wind test reviewed here: http://www.hardwaterkiter.com/kite-and-gear-reviews/2015-ozo... "That was a killer, kick ass day!" - Chris Krug

Chris had made some slight modification to the bridle, shortening two segments. It flew superbly well. The Peak-2 launch you see in the beginning of the video was this kite's maiden voyage out West!

The 2.5m NS3 handled the wind like a champ, leaping around like a scalded cat. It was a blast to fly both of these kites under these conditions. I never felt overpowered or about to get OBE'd. In fact, if I had more time I would have landed the 2.5m and put up my 3.2m! I think that would have been a lot of kite to handle in those winds, but it would have been a blast!

YAY WIND! That looks so much fun!:D
