Fixed bridal or de-power? please advise

miller - 13-7-2015 at 02:07 PM

Evening all,

I'm looking to get into land-boarding.

Quick bit of background:

38 yrs old, live in the U.K, in Oxford, so inland and blustery winds. I'm a life long skateboarder, formerly sponsored and I snowboard too, wake-boarded a few times and mountain boarded a handful of times.
I'm 6ft and weigh 15st or 210 lbs, wind speed here is about 10-25mph average, I think. I have a Flexifoil Big Buzz and have pretty much mastered 2 line flying in all wind conditions and understand the window well.

So... what set up?

4 line Fixed bridle with handles?
4 line Fixed bridle with a turbo bar?
de-powerable foil on a bar and harness?

I'm thinking of a second hand purchase to keep costs down if it's depower

4 Line fixed bridles I've looked at are P.L Hornet/Twister, Ozone Flow/Octane HQ Beamer or Flexifoil Sting/Rage

No Idea about de-powers though, although I know they are costly.

Haven't given the board too much thought yet.

Any advise based on my riding experience and limited kite experience is much appreciated,

Many thanks

You need a good depower kite for landboarding . there is a 7M HQ montana going for a great price in the for sale section. check it out.

Depower. Cost seems high but given that a single depow will cover the wind ranges of roughly 3 fixed bridles it actually a good investment. And being able to dump or build power on demand is priceless.

You're a stout lad so you'll be able to use that weight to manage a lot of power. But as you are also new to depower I think prudent that you get some qualified instruction. It is quite a bit different n many ways from your fixed bridle. Otherwise I'd recommend starting with a small depow (2.5-4m) to minimize the risk in self teaching then getting a (7-9m) as your go to kite. These sizes BTW would vary depending on model.

The small kite will work as a depow trainer initially but then do double duty as your high wind kite.
:P
You will also need a harness.

I posted in your other topic and it feels familiar to this one. You can read up there.

With your background have you thought of kite skating / street kiting ?
Might be an option without the big outlay. Not literally the high street obviously but an empty car-park or whatever. :D

Check this too -

If landboarding on grass then go depower. You need good power to roll on that stuff, the space to roll and a kite to soak up the dirty winds.

Kitesurfing kites aka LEI's aka tubes, once their internal bladders are inflated retain their solid shape even when the wind drops off. Therefore they perform better imo than foils at your location. I'm in Croydon South London and have perhaps less reliable wind than you and I use LEI's.

Thanks Tom. Yep streetkite is affordable and fun, but seems to be easily overlooked. I overlooked it for a year. It's very natural if you have a skate background. I took a a break from skating for 25 years but I'm back at it.

Depower - why? One handed-kiting to use other arm to counter balance.
