Today is a Sad Day

Cheddarhead - 3-8-2015 at 11:01 AM

It was discovered over the weekend that my favorite buggy location will now be gone forever. Beginning today the city started bulldozing and digging up my beloved field that I put on so many miles. All I have left is a few video's to remember the enjoyment I got from that place. This particular spot is next to an amusement park. It has been vacant but used by soccer players, dog walkers, kite flyers, etc for over 25 years. Now the city decided to expand the amusement park which means no more field for other things. Here is the spot I'm refering to: So sad:(

Dang man, sorry to hear that. Maybe check out some schools on the outskirts of town. Mainly elementary and middle schools surrounded by farm fields if you have any. High schools seem to always fence off their sports fields in my area.

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

That really sucks. I've watched a fair number of your videos from that field and always thought of it as absolute PRIMO. Sean's suggestions are good ones; I hope something like that works for you.

Oh no! Not the roller-coaster place. I love that site. :(

I wanted to visit one day. It looked like such a great and well maintained spot with the added convenience of driving right up to the grass. Sorry man. I know what it must mean to you.

So what now ?

Thanks guys.......I have two other back up spots but not nearly as good. Both are soccer complexes so timing is essential when picking your riding times. I'm always on the look out for better places but it's a struggle. Google earth is a good tool to hone in on potential places.

America seems to have an aversion to non-designated green space.

See an empty patch of green and there seem to be a knee jerk reaction to put up soccor goals, golf holes, light poles, or the fast food chain du jour.

By comparison, the UK seems to be good about leaving relatively large swaths of land/park space open for public use without the need to designate it for one particular activity or another.

I wonder if the amusement park will do what some fairgrounds have been known to do..... put up a fence and the field will be unused for a good portion of the year and then serve as overflow for "holiday events."

Is this Bay Beach Amusement Park that's expanding?

It is Sam:thumbup: A new ride is being constructed in the vacant area so buggying is pretty much out of the question even in the off season. Win some you lose some.

That stinks. For the last two winters, my county hasn't removed the 8 soccer goals. They use to take them up at the end of every year.

Man... LAME!!! I'm sorry to hear it Cheddar, that really did look like a primo spot... one of my favorite spots is the grass lot parking area at the North GA fairgrounds... it is fun to see that coaster in the background... sorry for you man

I have one great spot. There are 2 huge fields that I use at the same location. 1 is a set of lacrosse fields that I look to remain and the other is literally used for nothing so I can always kite even if there is a lacrosse event. It's beside a school so I don't use it during school hours. I speculate they have future plans to build something because there is a couple fire hydrants in the middle of nowhere. I agree with Sam. There is no value placed on open space to most people. Even when they build parks in my area they will plant a hundred trees. There is value for communities to have large unobstructed areas for all sorts of hobbies and sports. I noticed most if not all soccer complexes (even publicly owned) within the city limits have a list of rules a mile long that even limit the public from using it all including playing soccer there without permission. They are set up for clubs and leagues. Oddly enough I've had better luck with the privately owned soccer complexes.

Question for NAPKA members or representatives: If I join NAPKA, does that give me any liability insurance to use as a peace of mind for the places I use? I am literally the only person on the field when I use it but just curious.

Unfortunately the island is off limits to the public. Perhaps one day it will serve a better purpose than a seagull nesting place or river dredging depository:lol:

Oh that's funny Bobby!:lol: Yes I am "him" and "he" is me:D I agree, it's very hard to connect real names to many of our stage names. It took me a few years before I realized that Chris Krug and "Feyd" were the same. Doh!

Suckers. You'll all never figure out that my last name and username are one in the same. Sucks you lost your riding spot. I cross my fingers my local spot will kick soccer out so we don't lose it most weekdays spring and fall. Luckily it's a large field they use for the hot air balloon fiesta, and so it'll never go away, and we've yet to be yelled at, except by the rc pilots who would prefer to use it over the 3 rc parks they have!

That's really weird as RC pilots and power kiters should be two groups that should be able to co-exist.

RC works best in low/no-wind and power kiting works better with more wind (within reason).

One day when power kiters finally make it onto the ESL (Endangered Species List), perhaps state/federal land will be set aside for us.
