Big buggy!

Blitzhound - 12-9-2015 at 12:19 PM

Hello everyone. This may be a futile request but I'm looking for a buggy. I'm 6'8" tall and weigh in at 290 lbs. I need something big and strong. If you have something or even suggestions. I'm open. Made it to SOBB last week. Sadly only for one day before life came calling. Got to see a lot of libre's and beamerbobs wicked Apexx. Sadly I don't have an unlimited budget to import one. Gotta find something closer to home.

shehatesmyhobbies - 12-9-2015 at 12:48 PM

Did you talk to Jeff while you were out there? He is a Libre dealer and would be the one to talk to about them. Libre super truck is really nice and well built.

Blitzhound - 13-9-2015 at 11:04 AM

No I didn't. If he is the U.S. Distributor gonna need to find him.

Bladerunner - 13-9-2015 at 11:57 AM

Jeff wasn't there. Jon was. Jon was the tall white haired man BLOWING PAST me with His big blue JoJo.:thumbup:

I am not 100% clear on Jeff's commercial interests these days? It appears his shop is no longer online.

Jon is feeling a lot better and He is actually the person who has the North American distribution rights for Libre, I think ????? Not only does He have the rights He has the greatest amount of Libre / buggy knowledge of any of us. When Jon was running his shop it was KiteBuggySpeedShop. If I wanted any kind of info on Libre I would be going directly to Jon. Jellis on this forum.

Bladerunner - 13-9-2015 at 12:09 PM

If money is tight I think you need to keep an eye on the forums, craigs list etc. and not be toooooo picky about what comes up.

I know a local dropped off a Pl XR at the thrift shop in Steveston British Columbia Canada ??? Canadian dollar is weak so ..... :puzzled:

Blitzhound - 13-9-2015 at 02:01 PM

Thanks for the tips bladerunner. My only concern with the PL buggies is my weight. At almost 300 pounds. Do you think the XR or even a Bigfoot will hold up?

RedSky - 13-9-2015 at 02:56 PM

A Libre is a good solution for you but you're a big guy though. 6ft 8" !!.. I'm not sure you are going to enjoy the Peter Lynn bugs.

I'd like to suggest a Parastorm Typhoon buggy but I don't think you'll find any in the states, I might be wrong. I own a stainless steel copy of the Typhoon called the Dust Devil by Trikbitz and fitted Bigfoot tyres. I have also had a few sessions in the original and Gobi desert versions.

I would describe the Typhoon as the smallest big buggy out there.

You get a deep comfortable seat with high side rails, super strong lightweight frame , 160mm Downtube travel and adjustable front forks to suit every size of rider. The frame weighs in at just 11.9Kg thanks to its aircraft grade aluminium construction, that's about the same as a Peter Lynn.

They pack down small for shipping. I don't think these are in production any more but they do occasionally pop up on ebay here in the UK.

Blitzhound - 13-9-2015 at 03:02 PM

thanks redsky...thats a SWEEET looking bug you got there! thats my size of bug lol!

abkayak - 13-9-2015 at 03:07 PM

That's a bigass bug...I couldn't reach the pedals

RonH - 13-9-2015 at 03:47 PM

Not sure if Sean is / was still thinking about selling the Libre Majestic... Now that's a nice buggy and would fit someone 6'8"

Too big for me at 6"1"

bigkid - 13-9-2015 at 05:33 PM

Sean's majestic is in a new home now.
Don't buy a pl bug of any type for your size. Of the 3 pl bugs I have owned only 1 was able to last through my test and it was welded solid by the previous owner befor I got it. They are to easy to fold the down tube when you are powered up.
I would recommend a full size buggy of just about any make long before a pl bug.

Blitzhound - 13-9-2015 at 06:45 PM

I really like the libre's. The majestic would be perfect. I've also been eyeballing the IVANPAH FROM WINDSPEED PRO. Any thoughts on it?

Cheeks - 13-9-2015 at 08:32 PM

At 285 and 5'11" I was trashing my light weight buggy every session. Even with Loc-Tight on all the bolts and nuts
I couldn't keep it from self destruction. I needed a back rest and had to build one. Big men need a back rest.

I studied the Ivanpah and Big Kid had a used one for sale so I bought it. Best decision I ever made!

It's bullet proof! Super strong, well built, fully adjustable, extremely comfortable, smooth riding and easy rolling for it's size.
Only down side is it's not light. Take it to the lake bed or to J.I. it works anywhere. Not a free style buggy!

I say bite the bullet get an Ivanpah, you'll love it AND you'll never need another buggy!

Blitzhound - 14-9-2015 at 07:54 AM

Thanks cheeks. That's what I wanted to hear. Someone with experience with the IVANPAH. After doing considerable research. It seems it's my only option other than waiting for a used libre to come on the market. I spoke with libre. They can put a nice buggy together for me. But I don't know how I can get it to the U.S. Without taking out another mortgage. Haha! Same goes for all the other European brand buggies.

Cheeks - 14-9-2015 at 10:58 AM

You know that GT Race buggies in Germany will custom fit a buggy to your measurements.

http://www.gt-race.nl/

They can ship to the US but be prepared to pay. The buggy/with options, the freight, the VAT tax
and a tax tax. Gurtie and Martin Faber are good folks and can hook you up.

Bladerunner - 14-9-2015 at 12:01 PM

Do you have a way of transporting and storing an Ivanpah without breaking it down? If so, it is not a bad choice.

I was happy enough with mine but due to ease of transport + our small local park my small buggy won out. If I had the ability to keep it in one piece + transport it I would not have sold.

Seems I have lost track of Libre and Jon has passed the distributorship on to Jeff aka BigKid.

I think Jeff is correct that you would eventually destroy any model of PL.

Cheeks - 14-9-2015 at 01:53 PM

As to the transport and storage.... I built a trailer hitch Buggy rack. Don't have to dissemble.
Pop it on the rack and strap it down. Go.
Storage is ... under a trap in the back yard.

If you want to break it down then the front fork is simple, no bearings one long bolt.

The rear axle has to be pulled through the clamps once a tire is removed. There's a bolt on the
clamp that allows you to spread the clamps wider so it's easy to pull out.
I suggest you make a short pipe the length of the clamp spread and place it there when you do pull the axle.
Although the back rest should keep the side rails spread. I marked the positions of my clamps so I didn't have to remeasure the spread when replacing the axle.

Once you get it back together and your spread is right, the buggy runs straight and true. Front wheel is self centering. And you can't beat the Buggie Bags seat and pads. Like sittin in a rockin chair.

U2U me with an e-mail and I'll send you pictures of my transport rack.

skimtwashington - 14-9-2015 at 03:59 PM

Hmmmnnn....

I wish I could remember the make/model....but..

A younger guy-Jason- who goes to WBB showed up last time w/ a new bug that looked pretty solid-not as solid as Ivapah, but well built...Sturdy but not too heavy..... that was $1000- he said..... with shipping included !. I was incredulous at the total price with shipping, as I think it came from overseas.

Anyone remember What Jason's buggy was from Wildwood last April?

All this buggy talk got me thinking and dreaming...

soliver - 14-9-2015 at 04:45 PM

No one has mentioned Van. While he isn't producing buggies full time anymore, he will make one for you if you can be patient. Van Tan Tech (VTT) buggies are big and custom... really good quality too. Easy to modify if you know how to weld. I have always been a fan myself. Jason (3shot) has a VTT Black Widow which is a killer buggy if you ask me. He can work with you on all the details, like Jason just had Van Fab up the buggy then he painted it himself.... Jason is over 6' as well if I remember correctly.

Both of my buggies are VTT self modified custom buggies.

ssayre - 14-9-2015 at 05:01 PM

Too bad we don't have more good used buggies or even more new buggies available in the states.

The UK ebay always has buggies it seems like

Blitzhound - 14-9-2015 at 08:17 PM

I have seen pics of the VTT's I think it was Big Mike that was offering them for awhile. But I like the looks of the IVANPAH and transport isn't a problem. My daily driver is a 1 ton dually pickup! Plenty of room haha! Besides I've got miles of beach and the Oregon sand dunes out my back door! While the dunes are packed with ATV's in the summer there pretty dead and empty in the winter. And there right on the water so good clean wind! It really is too bad we don't have more buggy options available here in the U.S.

BeamerBob - 15-9-2015 at 06:46 AM

You would like the Ivanpah or one of Vans buggies. Both have good high back support and lateral support from the side rails. The Ivanpah buggy is crazy strong.

Even with a full size pickup, your back wheels won't fit inside the bed with the tailgate closed.

shehatesmyhobbies - 15-9-2015 at 02:44 PM

Jason's buggy is a Sysmic. Yes a very well built buggy.

soliver - 15-9-2015 at 04:01 PM

I'm referring to "3shot" Jason, who owns a VTT Black Widow

And here's my VTT Stinger/Blackwidow/XR/homebrew monster buggy:

skimtwashington - 15-9-2015 at 04:17 PM

Different Jason, I guess.

Anyway,

Sysmic 2 ? okay... yeah I guess that's it. Looks like it and cost matches what he said. Went to Buggy Kite Shop for look see.

No plastic rims..... solid frame. And after checking for most basic/standard model... he was correct about cost to North East coast area. About $1060 SHIPPED(at present Euro to US exchange rate) .

Unfortunate cartoon image:

Nicer real pic in upgraded Midi XL at $1157 shipped:

84 and 99 pound weights respectively.

A lot of buggy for the money. So much so, that even with $400+ shipping :o.....it's a decent deal for a good solid buggy, brand spankin' new.

Not a bad option......:bouncy:

I may have to try ride in Jason's for fun of it if he comes to WBB. Only sat in it last time

Bladerunner - 16-9-2015 at 04:42 AM

If I could bring a Sysmic in for the cost of a standard Ivanpah I would be ALL OVER the Sysmic!

skimtwashington - 16-9-2015 at 06:36 AM

Ken, Did you do the shipping calculator on their site?

I just looked. Came up w/ same cost to Vancover!

So, same prices mentioned above....it looks like.

There's no duty/import tax in US on this..I'm pretty sure...Jason did not say there was...or additional cost.

Import Tax in Canada?

(BTW...Thanks for Coyote help.)

Ivanpah

Blitzhound - 16-9-2015 at 03:23 PM

I would love to get my hands on a good used IVANPAH!!!

Bladerunner - 16-9-2015 at 03:35 PM

I would talk to Oldfart!

If the 2 of you can work out a way to avoid shipping my / Big Kid's old Ivanpah would be ideal!

Blitzhound - 16-9-2015 at 04:13 PM

Absolutely!!! U2U sent to oldfart

jellis - 17-9-2015 at 11:03 AM

FYI I do have a connection with Libre. I know where there is a Libre VMAX that would fit you requirements. SOBB gang gave Philly Thompson a new one a few years back and he wasn't able to use it. He's asking $450 and I canl help you tune it.

Blitzhound - 25-9-2015 at 09:54 AM

Thank you everyone. Great group as always. PKF never disappoints. I found a buggy. Jellis hocked me up with a sweet little Libre Vmax. Just picked it up yesterday. Now I just need to find a Bigfoot fork for it and I'm golden. Again...Thank you everyone for the great offerings and suggestions and for pointing me in the right direction. Also a big thanks to Jellis for setting me up with a great ride!

sand flea - 25-9-2015 at 06:25 PM

Way to roll Patrick!

Lets meet at Sunset ASAP!
