Tricking the Wind Gods

^^FlyinHighAgain^^ - 8-11-2015 at 05:35 PM

Pack a few kites to your spot, the one you intend to use and one you don't, unpack both and set them up when the wind dies start packing up the one you never intended on using and the wind will start blowing again.

Never fails the wind dies and I start packing up and the wind kicks up again!
This is my work around. Lol

I know exactly how that goes. It was why I brought my 19m Venom II when I had it. It'd guarantee the wind would turn on or off, and not be that tease of maybe it'll get steady/pick up enough.

I also bring a small R/C sailplane, which is only really flyable in dead still air. That ensures some wind stays up at all times. And when it dies completely... it is still fun to fly the plane :)

post your favorite kite for sale in the forum....this usually will ensure a proper breeze

Invite me.

Usually I arrive late in the morning so if you get out early you can ride until I come and kill the wind. If I am going to show up early stay late and the wind will blow when I leave.

I am not exactly joking. Folks around here believe I have some crazy wind killing thing going on! :(

Here's another I learned yesterday. Try starting a camp fire!

Sometimes tricks can work too well! For months I've been planning the trip I'm on now down to Lake Ivanpah outside of Las Vegas, NV. I am working at a big conference for a week on The Strip and I drove 6 hours down from Park City with all my buggy and kite gear. Now I'm here and have free time for three afternoons starting today.

Problem: high wind warnings starting midday today through tomorrow night. I'm worried there will be too much wind! The conditions at Ivanpah should be base winds in the mid 20s with gusts into the mid 30's. I've got small kites (and reasonably big stones) but yikes! First time heading to the Playa. :o

You call that too much wind out your way? Pfff
There's a reason I don't have a kite bigger than 7m and it's not because I'm chicken :D

Ha! Turned out yesterday was AWESOME. It was my first time ever in wind that strong that was also CLEAN. In the Wasatch Mountains when the winds are up over 30 mph they are extra super janky, usually associated with a major cold front pushing into the area. Turns out that strong winds coming through wide open spaces like the NV/CA desert are super smooth compared to Mountain winds and are much easier to deal with. :saint:

Must have been awesome, I can feel the stoke through the screen over here

From the other thread you had your 2.5 NASA out, mine is my go to kite when the winds get high and gusty as well. Probably has the most hours on it of all my kites. Eats gusts and pulls like a truck, but it's hard to get in any real danger with it, other than going too fast and getting scared :). Big winds and small kites... good times!
