Brands, kite names and missed opportunities

Devoted - 14-11-2015 at 08:05 PM

Maybe I am the only one, but here iis my thought.
Years ago brands seemed to have actually a line up in the way they named their kites.
Flexifoil: Blade (jumpkite) Bullet (traction kite)
Ozone: Frenzy (Depower) Riot (ment to compete withe the Blade) Samurai (Sort of traction and intermediate kite)
Peter Lynn: Venom (allrounder) Scorpion (supposed to be phantom successor) and I forgot the name of the waterkite that was in that line up.

But the above are examples
Now I see all kinds of names. Almost just randomly picked.

With Pansh Adam, I missed Pansh Eve.
With Ozone, the old days sounded cool. Like kiting was for outlaws. Nowadays..R1 and C4 sound like R2D2 from star wars. And if there is R1, why also call a kite Uno.
Flexifoil had murderweapons in the old days. They have still a line up. Frenzy, Blade, Rage. But Chrono sounds like a Suisse watch.

Am I the only one noticing this? What happened with cool line-up kitenames.

Never mind that the same names are used by multiple brands.

Reusing a name already in use by another manufacturer seems like a bit of professional courtesy that has fallen by the wayside.

Perhaps with names like R1 and C4 Ozone is trying to harken to some similar aircraft names like F-4 or F-16. How successful that is may be questionable as some of the longer names have always seemed cooler than their short designations (i.e. F-15 Strike Eagle, T-38 Talon, X-31 Saber Bat).

Perhaps the shorter/simpler names are meant to complement the homogenized color schemes.

Ozone calls their LEI trainer the Uno because of its single strut design and it's meant to be the 1st (ordinal one) kite in some people's progression. Few kites are more appropriately named.

More worrying to me was when Ozone chose alpha rather than numeric modifiers to denote generations.... Ozone Access XC or XT, Ozone Frenzy FYX, etc.

ATB,
Sam

Longer names soumd better imo.
The UNO...thanks for reminding me why they named that kite UNO. I forgot bout that single strut design. (Uno makes sense again)

Nothing beats SOULFLY . Coolest name ever for a kite. Very fitting:)

Soulfly...do we have a winner?

RedSky - 17-11-2015 at 06:41 AM

Big Mama or Boss ?

I'm with you Devoted. I don't like those Alfa-numeric/ hexadecimal names. Little to no imagination there.
I suppose they're trying to capture that serious no nonsense race inspired market. The Yamaha YZF R1 for instance. I'm sure I saw the Ozone Chinos, not sure what that's about.

That was like 3 years ago (time flies). Remember the contest, but didn't remember the post being deleted. Think they went with the name Lynx.

My submission at the time:

Regarding names used by multiple brands, this LEI is surprisingly popular here on PKF:

Devoted - 18-11-2015 at 08:26 AM

Hahaha...sorry Sam. But the youtube vid on 46 seconds ssayre referes too made me smile. Your submission at that time is pretty cool tho.

At Pstkk. Do you have one for sale. It would be the most expensive second hand LEI on the market.

Regarding PL.
For the arcs, they have set names. More in line with the fixed bridles. (Vapor, Phantom) (Voltage, Reactor, Charger)
For snowkites, i think the names are spot on on too. Animals living in snowy areas. (Lynx, Leopard)
But for waterkites?? (Escape, Fury, Swell) , why not use water related animals or terms instead of the Escape and Fury.

IIt's little things that can instantly show us buyers, what the kite is been made for. I think PL missed an opportunity here. Not that Escape or Fury does not sound cool, but so do Man of War, Octopuss (i know they have one), Stingray.
Well you get the idea.

Or the waterkite that requires your ID because it's for adults only :D...the sperm whale.
