Merry Christmas everyone!!

I got an anemometer! They always come in handy even though the wind might be slightly different where the kite is flying.

3shot - 25-12-2015 at 03:27 PM

Merry Christmas kite peeps!!

canuck - 25-12-2015 at 04:48 PM

Merry Christmas from cold , snowy Calgary!

Sorry to hear about your Mother's hip Ken, hope she heals quickly and is not in pain.

My kiting gift from Santa was a pair of lobster claw ski gloves. Great for kiting FB with handles but the fingers on their own still get pretty darn cold when it is -15C and blowing.

If you bridle it right you'll have a good high wind kite.

Merry Christmas to all the p.k.f. Family.

Hey Alasdair - I'm over in Scotland now for a few weeks holiday and yes calm today but lot's of wind and rain over the last week. You'll know what this is; Fiona gave me a bottle of Abhainn Dearg that she picked up on Lewis earlier this year.

Good on ya with the lobstas! That's what I use too and agree that this is a good compromise for kiting. The key I've found is to have the lobstas large enough so you can wear a thing dexterous pair of glove liners. Another fine trick if the lobstas have a liner and shell set up it to nestle a hand warmer pack on the back of your hand nestled between the lobstas liner and shell. It won't completely stop your finger tips from getting chilled but it backs that time out quite a bit. The main secret for me is the glove liners that I can leave on when manipulating the lines. Barehand it in the cold and wind and you're basically done.

Good luck!

canuck - 25-12-2015 at 07:55 PM

Thanks for the lobstas tips Windstruck. I'll have to try a pair of glove liners.

The technique I use is to fold the kite until it is a square slightly longer than the bag is long, with free edges all tucked into the folds so no bridle lines are sticking out, then roll the kite tightly as if it were a sleeping bag. Work the stuff sack over the tightly rolled log (which will be too long for the stuff sack). Once it is in it will be easy to squish it down lengthwise so it fits in the sack.

ssayre - 26-12-2015 at 07:28 AM

Where did you guys get the stuff sacks?

Yes mark it from the Uig whisky Distillery on the Isle of Lewis.
We have another whisky Distillery in the Isle of Harris just started distilling malt whisky a month ago.
Where in Scotland are you at the moment?

Fiona lives in Broughty Ferry, overlooking the beach and Tay from her front window just east of Dundee. One of these next few visits I'll get Fiona to take me to Harris and Lewis, Barra is the closest I've been so far on the Hebrides but all over on the mainland - hope to get a couple of days at St Andrews if we get a break in the rain and a good wind direction

Can't speak for Spencer, but I got my stuff sacks here:

http://www.backcountry.com/granite-gear-toughsacks

I use the larger long ones for my Peaks (4 & 6 in the smaller long sack and my 9 & 12 in the larger long sack). If you are interested in what sizes I put what NS3s in please let me know.

jrhook - 27-12-2015 at 07:05 AM

Just chomping at the bit to get some wind and hardpack...Happy New Year kiters!

TEDWESLEY - 27-12-2015 at 07:58 AM

I'm getting new ski gear for soft snow with AT bindings and boots to match. I'm hoping not to posthole my way across the lake anymore
when the wind departs! Of course we would need snow and ice to appear for that to happen... 55deg. here on Christmas. Soon come I'm sure.
When you get the new bicycle in your stocking it snows to beat the band. A form of kite curse to be sure.

Mark, I had a wee dram in your honor last evening. Holly sends her best to the both of you!

Our lobstas don't wear no stinkin gloves around here, just AAA butta

Cool I'm on the westside of Isle of Lewis. There wee gale heading this way next possibly upto 70 to 80 mph gust so I think you'll have no problems with lack of wind
