Power difference

Jonnysoper - 28-2-2016 at 01:11 AM

Hi all I took the beamer 3.6 and my little devil 4.5 out yesterday (by the way I'm new to kiting) the beamer was no problem whatsoever but the little devil all I can say is wow the power was absolutely mad it pulled me about like I wasn't attached to it but when I got control it was great fun but an arm killer but I'm loving this kiting lark 😆

I'm new to the powerkite scene too, and am awaiting arrival of a Beamer V 4.0 meter, so I'm interested in your observations on the pull and lift of the Beamer 3.6.

How much do you weigh, and what were the wind conditions in your location if you don't mind me asking.

HI I've only taken them out in light winds the pull and lift of my beamer is ok but I'm using the beamer as a learning kite i don't think it's a kite for lifting if your wanting to jump but don't hold me to that as I'm a learner myself but in the same wind the little devil pulled like a train I weigh about 10 and a half stone and I'm in the UK (in land😢;) wellingborough once I get more confidant I'm going to get a blade for jumping though I did get some air with the devil yesterday

147 lbs? You're a lightweight! I'm a tad over 6' and go 190 lbs (13.5 stone) buck naked.

Sounds like the 4.0 meter should be manageable by me in light winds. As is recommended, my plan is to slowly work up in wind speed. Thnx for the response.

This is not a kite for jumping. You will get great lift in strong winds but coming down will hurt. Ask me how I know.

Yeah I don't advise jumping on any kite smaller than 6-8 m. The small sizes like 4m kites just don't have enough float to be safe. If both of you are new, you want to stick to low-lift kites at first. I could post any number of videos of people getting hurt by kites. Stay safe.

2 kites can be exactly the same size and yet put out power VERY differently!

Beamers and the like are typically Low Aspect Ratio kites bridled for stability over lift / pull. Higher aspect and different settings on the bridle can increase the lift / pull an amazing amount!
The Little Devil was a more advanced kite. They were fast and delivered power with a real punch. A great kite that lived up to it's name. If you don't stay on top of it the Little Devil will get you!

The Devil will lift you off the ground. NO problem! It is too small to continue to apply lift for a prolonged period of time. It will drop you like a rag doll. The best fun you can have with it static will be down low. Scudding down wind. Trying to jump with it will surely go bad. Only a matter of time. :bigok:

I would say that the Beamer and the Little Devil are pretty much in the same category, both were designed for beginner kiters and are both what I would consider low aspect ratio kites. The big difference in the power production is that one is a 3.6 and the other a 4.5. To a beginner, it doesn't seem like that much of a difference in size, only one meter....but in reality one square meter of fabric (a little over 3.5' x 3.5' increase in flat sail area) is a pretty huge increase in overall size. More than enough to make up for the massive increase in power.

for what its worth, the 3.6 beamer is an older model that the little devil. yep the devil is bigger and has more power but to compare the devil and the beamer is like saying apples and oranges are fruit.
the devil if it were a 3.6m would have more poop than the beamer of the same size. this does not reflect on the newer beamers. the 3.6 beamer is about 9 years old if not older, while the devil is at least a couple years younger.

The Little Devil came out mid year 2001 and is almost 15 years old now.

Your right, I was thinking about another kite. The devil is still more poop than the Beamer.
