NEW PB!

soliver - 12-5-2016 at 07:48 PM

As we have done for the last few years, the family and I joined my In laws for a week of Vacation on Saint Simons Island for the week after JIBE (neighboring island, north of Jekyll) and I have been heading out to East Beach at the Coast Guard station for the last few evenings for sunset sessions on the beach. This is my 4th JIBE, and our 10th year coming to Saint Simons :o

I knew I had been hitting some good speeds close to 30 mph, but I didn't have my GPS with me until tonight... So this evening I hit 28.5 mph on the beach riding in my Stinger/XR Hybrid buggy and flying a 5.5m Nasa Star 3, beating my old PB from JIBE 2014 of 26.6 mph.

Unfortunately since it was too dark to take a good picture of the GPS, I decided to wait until I got back to the rental, only I forgot to turn it off and it logged the top speed of the drive home over my buggy speed ... so I have no proof. Poop.

Maybe I can pull a still out of my GoPro footage and zoom in close.

Thanks Guys!

This week on SSI has been phenomenal... I can only imagine that I went faster on Tues. but am not certain since I had not GPS on me.

Hitting 20 mph was easy, so I quickly worked up to 20 mph as I crossed the more populated section of beach and once I hit the home stretch I started to really work the kite and hit the high speed after a hundred yards or so. ... Those Nasa Stars really get going quick!

I can't wait until you hit 40+.

Jekyll is such a good beach for speed. I am pretty certain we were getting over 40 mph on Friday going from the south water tower headed north towards kite beach. Once I got up to speed, diving my kite down and bar in for some lightspeed downwind action was a blast. It felt faster than last year and we broke 40 mph on the beach last year. Mark mentioned after I stopped and got my RC out to try to record you guys that he had another couple runs where the wind came up a bit and he might have even touched 50+. Sorry I missed that part. I am a speed freak and got a little jealous that I had packed down for the day at that point.

that was monday Errol - friday was good too but monday was faster. When the wind comes up it seems often the later afternoon wind often turns on just a touch more.

Errol, did you guys ever clock those 40 mph runs with a GPS?... Just curious.

By the way, ... Hey Sean, after 1+ years and a broken foot,... I WIN!!!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:

markite - 13-5-2016 at 07:31 PM

Yes last year' we did many runs in the lower 40s up to 44 point something. I'd say late day monday of this year the couple of runs would have pushed pretty close to 50 range maybe in the 48 to 50 range, perhaps a hair more. That is just a guess though as I did not have my GPS on the bug Monday, just going by feel from many many runs with Gps at those speeds and upward. Hitting 50 on a beach feels different from that on the dry lake, you'll know it when you start getting into some higher speeds and how the buggy and everything feels different :-)

That's awesome Mark, I never realized you guys got that fast last year... I know we had an epic day or 2 but didn't realize you had clocked it... Also didn't realize you could get that fast on a beach... I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't... Not sure what made me think that though.

I can say that up there around 30 is pretty sweet. Don't think I'll ever hit much higher than 30 something with the Nasa Stars though.

In case you missed it earlier... HEY SEAN, I WIN!!!

ssayre - 13-5-2016 at 08:04 PM

I didn't miss it. I haven't been keeping track of my speed but may start.

Nice work on the pb.

I know, I know, I officially bowed out when I broke my foot, so I'm really just kidding... wanted to try and get your attention on the possibilities of riding the GA Golden Isles... and how SUWEET it is with the Nasa Stars especially!

Can't wait to cull through my GoPro footage!!!
