this is one of the better race videos

great shots, great course, good OBE, great ending, super kite-buggy company.

Very well done. I love seeing the turns and transitions.

Out of Curiosity how many of you think you could navigate a course like this?
How many think you could get around a couple of the turns?
How many wouldn't even try?
I liked the part of the course map on the right side with the fish showing the ocean.:D
I would hate to run that part of the course when a sneaker wave decided to visit.

I'd want lots of practice after studying the course for some time. Then it would help to follow someone better than me through after getting their advice first. Just remembering your next turn would be hard even before thinking about what you do with the kite and what path to take. Tracks would help with that. Overwhelming to us novices.

Holy Smokes.... That's legit. Awesome video!

That was a good and educational watch.

Two questions:

1) Are there buggy races like the one shown in the video here in North America?
2) Can a buggy brake traction and slid sideways or drift to shave speed? I can do it on my bike, I do it on skis with the kite all the time. Having never buggied I have no context but watching the turns I couldn't help thinking how sweet it would be to slide them.:D
Complex course for sure.

Nothing in North America, you don't want to hear my reason why.
The easiest and quickest way to reduce speed is to slide the rear as in the video. If you power into a turn you will be pulled sideways. After your turn you will do the same thing untill you catch up to the speed and power of the kite. I am answering the 2 questions with the idea of RACING. This applies in a quite less aggressive attitude at slower speeds.
If and when the abilities of the buggy community in this country this type of racing will not happen here. There is a handful that have raced in Europe but that doesn't help us here. There are a few more that would be capable of a European-style race, but it's not like everybody has that kind of loose change in their back pocket to jump on a plane and go do it for the weekend.

for sure. you can fish tail by a quick turn downwind then upwind and it will throw you into a slide to scrub speed.

Whoops bigkid beat me to it on the second question. must have posted near the same time.

bigkid - 8-7-2016 at 10:34 AM

Scrubbing off speed, sliding sideways, reduces speed and prolongs your time on the course. The idea of a race is to go as fast as you can without any slowing by any outside Means.
It is a blast to drift sideways for a hundred feet after a turn. 60 miles an hour, turn, back to 60 miles an hour, we do it all the time. Some of us can't understand doing 20 or maybe even 30 miles an hour all day long at the beach. Sometimes you just have to let go and floor it. Just saying...

kinda surprised to see the dps outnumber the fbs

That was great; thanks for sharing. Talk about grabbing the bull by the horns...

Thanks for sharing Jeff! Awesome video.

One of the most fun things to do in a buggy is riding on hard packed sand and doing a fast downwind turn (suicide gybe). As the kite sweeps through the window as you come out of your turn, you can slide in an arcing drift a hundred feet easy. The hard sand is super easy to modulate the slide on.

On the dry lake, you might slide to scrub speed but not for fun in a turn so much. At least not for me. I get more out of maintaining speed in the turn on the dry lake.

Gotcha. Definitely not a maneuver I would think would help in terms of racing but I was thinking in terms of maybe for fun or maybe for dumping speed quickly. Although the idea if some type of buggy "cutty" does jump in there as a means to shorten the distance of a turn. But doing it on a bike is not like dealing with a kite and doing it.

Just love the feel of drift and counter steer. :D

On a dry lake it would likely just burn up tires I imagine.

bigkid - 9-7-2016 at 06:42 AM

The fastest way to burn up tires on a dry lake is to scrub off the speed.

If anyone noticed the absence of small PL type buggies, your ahead of curve. You can't scrub off speed in a PL type bug with out flipping at higher speeds. The higher you sit and the lower side rails don't hold you in like the bigger bugs. Not to say you can't flip a bigger buggy as you can, it's just a 1000% easier in a small buggy. Now if the PL bug has bigfoots, 10000% easier.

it is so cool to go into a full speed 100 yard power slide at the ocean, in effort to slow down
and just when you get to the edge of a white foamy wave loop it and throw the bug the other direction, using the ocean as a berm and shoot off the other direction.

Marteen said the camera shot with the van driving over the camera only broke the mount not the camera. Good for another shot.
