PKD Century kite sale of the century.

bigkid - 16-2-2017 at 07:21 AM

I found a pile of brand new century's that need to find a new home. I have all sizes and both colors in both fabric weights.
For instance a brand new 2.2m USD 95.00 in the 6.0 fabric to a 12.5m in the 6.6 fabric for USD 340.00.
These are kite only and my guess that shipping will be about 15 to 25 bucks to the lower 48.
As soon as the biblical flood let's up I will be able to get them out to see exactly what's there. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Blitzhound - 16-2-2017 at 10:29 PM

I'd be a player for something at the 8-12m range.

bigkid - 16-2-2017 at 10:32 PM

I will have a complete list and prices hopefully Friday.

OffAxis - 17-2-2017 at 04:57 AM

Are these Century or Century II's? Not like I know the difference, just curious.

Can you also give a quick overview of the kite and what is its best application? I'm assuming this is mainly a buggy race kite.

I'd probably be interested in something from 4-6m for use in winds of 5-13mph, looking for a recommendation that fits in nicely with my current quiver.

Are you looking to go that fast or you talking about the wind? If it's the wind I would say you need the 12.5m.

1 fb isn't going to cut it for 5-13! There's a HUGE difference between 5 and 13. for 5 mph I would find something else to besides kite. For 13 mph I would be looking at the 4-6m range.

Well, your a badass then, what can I say :D

if you go to a place like ivanpah and drag the 6.6 material kite across the playa a few feet you will make holes in the kite. I recommend not buying the lite material if you are a newbie.

bigkid - 17-2-2017 at 08:30 AM

ssayre, guess you told me.:D not everyone is able to play as much as I have with as many different kites, buggies, line sets, and everything else kite related, I was trying to be a bit funny. guess I wasnt.
this is a kite that needs a bit of brake to perform to its potential. clean winds are always the best and granted the inland flyers have to deal with it. sorry to say I deal with it also, the only time it smooths out is when I am on one coast or the other on the beach and the weather is perfect. which happens once in a great while.
I do ride a buggy thats up at 100lbs and I have the skills to back up my bada$$. not to say it isnt impossible to buggy a PL and fly the same kite in the same winds. been there and done that. for the record, I was drenched to the bone with sweat and unable to unpucker for a couple days after I rode 10 miles in 18mph with the 12.5m. glad I did it and wish it was in my video colection.

bigkid - 17-2-2017 at 11:05 AM

Some have asked what the difference is between the materials.
One is lighter than the other is, which is obvious. Maybe this will help you to understand the flying characteristics of both materials.
I was at the beach one day with fletch, one of the guys here on the forum, and we both had a 10 m. I have the 10 m with the lighter material and fletch has a 10 m of the regular material. I put my kite on a line set of 100 feet. And put Fletcher's kite on a line set of 160 feet. We then went out and buggy down the beach together while trying to race each other, we were pretty much neck and neck all the way down the beach. At that point we switched kites and line sets and I was flying his, and he was flying mine. We then proceeded back down the beach to see if there was any difference in flying techniques, pilot, or anything else. Upon arriving at the other end of the beach we were again side-by-side, neck and neck. So in simple words the lighter material was flown on shorter lines then the regular material created the same amount of speed in the buggy as the longer lines and the regular material or able to generate and produce with the wind they were equal.
Just to see what the difference would be and how great of a difference it would be, we swap the line sets on the kites. The lighter material Kite got the longer lines and the regular material kite got the shorter lines. I don't need to tell anyone because it's really obvious that the lighter material kite on the longer lines kicked butt. There was no possibility that they were equal any longer.

Ok

awindofchange - 17-2-2017 at 05:50 PM

I feel that telling people that they can buggy in 18mph winds with a 12.5 meter fixed bridle kite is bordering on irresponsible and can be very dangerous....and possibly fatal.

Technically, you don't need a parachute to sky dive either......you only need a parachute to sky dive twice.

These types of statements can get someone killed and be very detrimental to our sport. Please don't try buggying (or even launching) with this size kite in 18mph winds.

Blitzhound - 17-2-2017 at 07:50 PM

Thanks DAD! Can I be an adult now too?

I know from experience that I would never make it past launching in those winds. I tried launching a 12.5 nasa star in 15ish winds. That was plenty scary enough for me and lasted less than a few seconds before hitting safety  So kudos to anyone that can survive launch long enough to make it to buggy. :karate:

That's just me, I encourage others to try as long as your not hooked in and you have video. You won't need much charge on the camera. Video will only be a couple seconds long. :D:lol:

bigkid - 19-2-2017 at 10:47 AM

Interesting response to my 12m experience. So many thoughts and past experiences run through my mind, and most of those are business dealings.
So we will move on, ok?
I've always been amazed at how some of the buggy speed demons are able to handle a 5 or 6m FB kite while trying to break the speed record while spending a week at ivanpah. Some are trying to somehow control a 2 or 3m with little to no success. And most have got it together enough to enjoy the rush of accomplishment with a 3m FB kite. The fact that a person is out there trying is in itself a major accomplishment to be proud of. Whether they have the world record skills or they just stand and watch it's a trip they need to do at least once in their life.

A newbie launching a 5m would be stupid when a 2m is beyond his or her skill level. One of the first things I learned about kites of any size is control. I watched a guy launch a 15m FB in 10mph wind and never moved his feet. I couldn't do that with a 3m kite. After a couple try's at it with his help I was doing it with a 10m, never moved my feet. Wow what a nice piece of knowledge.
Ever wondered why it's so dangerous to hot launch a kite?
Hook in and it's actually easier to launch a bigger kite in higher winds, IF YOU FEATHER THE BRAKES AS YOU LAUNCH THE KITE. Slowly release the brakes as you launch. Only way to do that is to move your hands to the brake end of the handles. If you think about it you only have half of the kite under control when you are holding the power end of the handles. Go ahead and bad mouth me and tell me I'm an idiot. I will show anyone I have more control than they do by simply holding the brake end of the handles. Most all of the people who race in Europe that use handles are using the largest ones they make even for the smaller kites. Why? Because it gives them more control.
Large or small, big or small, new or old, skill comes from knowledge and experience. Without a bit of pushing the envelope you never find the edge let alone what's past it.
Don't think for a second I had all the info and knowledge and skill without asking, being shown and trial and error. Most of it was, show me, show me again. No YouTube or reading is sufficient for me. Until you pick up a hammer and hit the nail no book will ever make the nail disappear into the wood. I just hope the smashed thumb doesn't detour your desire.
Not every person is a teacher and not every person can be taught to fly kites. I know a guy who has seen most of the videos and has watch for days on how to buggy. His wife is a good buggy rider while the husband still cant launch a kite. go figure.

I do not want anyone to fly anything without some sort of Kite Killer, AQR, or at least a helper who knows first aid and can call 911 when needed. Like anyone will listen. Nothing is ever gained without some sort of sacrifice. With everything I have learned and gained I have paid for with dislocations, breaks, loss of blood and body parts, pins, titanium, and lots of pain, pills and tons of money. I have some knowledge, experience, scars, limited movement and an empty wallet to show for it all.

Mama said not to do that. what does she know.

Now that I hijacked my own post, these kites are still looking for a new home at about 70% off the new price for a new kite.:D

Blitzhound - 19-2-2017 at 12:14 PM

Thank you Jeff for sharing your experience with the rest of us without censorship. I for one am grateful to have such a resource of experience and information as you. Most of us here are adults. Hell...a lot of the PKF membership qualify for senior discounts! Haha. I'm more then capable of making my own choices and knowing my own limitations without someone else deciding for me what I should or shouldn't know.
Sharing these things only serve to show me the possibilities of what I can be capable of. It doesn't make me wanna run out and launch a 12m Century in 15mph winds. But it does give me something to strive for... To better my skills and ability to do it safely if I so chose. This isn't golf.

P.S. No offense intended towards the seniors here.

eric67m - 19-2-2017 at 07:43 PM

We all choose how much we are willing to push the envelope. I usually start small and underpowered and build if it is necessary. Jeff has always said to me that he chooses to fly overpowered and suggests not to do it for others unless they have the skills and are comfortable with their abilities. Jeff's pushing the envelope led to his unfortunate accident and his subsequent testing and invention the AQR. This will help out many people and make our sport safer for anyone who chooses to use it whether underpowered, overpowered or just get just past their comfort zone.

Thank you Jeff for all you have done and continue to contribute to kiting.

Now let's return this thread to selling these kites.

Hey Jeff ,I found a sheet of paper folded up inside the 3.5,it appears to have something to do with the bridles and this specific kite (serial # is on it) . Is this a tuning sheet or something ? Custom tuning ? Any idea?

bigkid - 5-3-2017 at 10:16 PM

Top secret. Now I have to kill you.

Also the RED is gorgeous. Definitely my favorite design thus far. Thank you again Jeff always a pleasure doing business with you.

Got to put some time in on the Century's the other day. Excellent, excellent, kites. I really enjoyed them. Started the day on the 4.5m then ended the day on the 6.0m this was my first session under the Century's that I was able to get some solid riding in. And really learn these kites. They sure are a different animal from what I normally fly. I find myself wanting an entire quiver.

Thank you again Jeff. Wonderful kites.

There is still time to order a kite or 2 and have it for Jibe. Might be enough time to order and receive it before WBB, I can ship to the Shalimar for those who procrastinate.
I still can't believe I'm letting these go for below cost, my cost.:o

I can't make the spring event, but will make the fall one for sure.
I bring my century's with me anytime I go out in the bug. If weldngod goes this spring, he will have a few in his collection. I'm sure he doesn't bite unless he likes you. He might even let you try one or 2 of them.
If he doesn't, you be sure and let me know.

I flew the light skinned 2.8m today and I was extremely impressed.

In very light wind it was pulling like a much larger kite.

I was extremely impressed. I give this kite a major thumbs up!

(Unpaid endorsement...but if you want to throw me a few bucks...)

Another bump on this thread. A couple of weeks ago got a 8m from Jeff. This is the 5th kite from Jeff, and as always an easy great transaction. The kites are awesome even for a beginner like me.
