Yeah, I know... I typed this long post and now it's gone.

cheezycheese - 21-2-2017 at 02:46 PM

Oh well... here goes again.
I started cycling last spring to add some cardio to my regimen. I bought a hybrid bike second hand from my local bike store. I grimaced at the price, having no idea what leaps and bounds in technology bikes have taken since I last owned one (30 yrs). In any event I rode the hell out of that thing last summer and fall. I avg 50-100 miles a week. I started riding with a friend that is into bikes hardcore.Well, I now have three bikes. The hybrid, a full carbon road bike and a fatbike. I am participating in a 20mi fatbike race in the snow in two weeks and a 100 mile M.S. ride this fall. Bikes are just as addictive as kites I see.

With the warm weather, they have been out in full force getting in everyone's way on the roads. I'm very carful not to pass in an unsafe way but many are not so cautious. Probably more important to wear your helmet on the bike than in the buggy

cheezycheese - 21-2-2017 at 02:50 PM

Yeah, here too. I prefer the trails to the road, but sometimes they are one and the same.

Glad you're enjoying the bike scene, Marc.

I had a serious Biking addiction years ago but riding little these days.

Century(100) mi. road rides .....group trips(Appalachian Mt club) thru mountain passes.... and then solo... then all Mt biking on single track trails....sometimes climbing 1-2 thousand feet and down...

Mt biking on trails is the best... and safer. The scenery of the rivers and cliffs and riding up and down on roots, rock(reggae!) granite slabs... loved it.

. NEVER assume you have right of way....

Windstruck - 21-2-2017 at 04:25 PM

In my "yute" (My Cousin Vinny reference) I really enjoyed riding. In the early 90s I built two bikes (matching mountain and road, getting the frames powder coated and then assembling them by hand). I rode in the Davis Bike Club (CA) back then with a bunch of Cat 2-4 riders, including an occasional showing by Eric Hyden of Lake Placid Olympics speed skating fame. He went on to be a Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon by the way.

In the late 80s I biked for a month all through what used to be called Yugoslavia crisscrossing the country North to South to North again before ascending the Alps and rolling into Vienna.

Alas, life got busy and long hours in the saddle slipped into the rear view mirror. Super cool that you have found the joy, allure, and great sucking sound that is cycling. Good lord, kiting and biking? I hope for your sake you're a trust fund baby. :P

Still have any of your gear Brian..? I have done some single track stuff at Stewart Forest on the Fatbike. We have gone after the snow fall.

@Windstruck - biking for a month would be great, if only I were this passionate in my yute. I'm at the mid century mark. my bud and I are planning a bike pack trip though. Maybe a few days at best.

skimtwashington - 21-2-2017 at 09:18 PM

Yeah still have a couple mt bikes.... old style now... with only front shock and caliper brakes instead of disc.

Had a road bike I sold off . I actually rode my mt bike on and off road..as I was car-less for three years..... way back in last century...

Here's a trip to a Mt bike mecca you can dream on...

cheezycheese - 22-2-2017 at 05:12 AM

I seen that one Brian. Love Seths videos.

flyguy0101 - 22-2-2017 at 06:55 AM

@cheezy- I used to ride all the time and have done several centuries in my youth as well as 2 double centuries (that was a lot of seat time) was a full time bike commuter for almost 2 yrs. So yes I can appreciate the pleasures of ridiing- now I only ride off road and try to keep it to as much single track and steep climbs as possible- fairly slow start this year having only ridden a little over 150 miles since 01/01/17- difference now is whitewater kayaking comes first and the cardio is not what it was so a little help from my pedal assist makes the riding much more enjoyable.:D:D last ride on Monday was 15 miles and had 1700 ft of climbing finishing with a 3 mile 1000 ft decent all single track.

I find bike seats incredibly uncomfortable. Couple that with the fact narrow seats can cause erectile dysfunction and I think I'll stick to buggy and longboard. No problems in that department but not worth the risk. :D

flyguy0101 - 22-2-2017 at 12:58 PM

@sayre- I always thought that was where the term numb nuts came from:D

I hear there's a cure for that... :D

Don't forget you can bike indoors, Marc...if you can shrink yourself..

I now live in city of Lynn, MA ...which has Lynn Woods Reservation- second largest municipally-owned park in the United States. Lots of single track and a local mecca for off road riding

Well Cheese, you know I ride too. I typically get my road bike out in April/May and ride through September. My inspiration is a charity two day 110 mile that I've done for 18 years.....this September will be 19. I also have a hybrid that I road a lot for 8 years before buying a road bike. I've only ridden trails a couple of times and loved it. Minnewaska State park NY was one of the places I trail rode. I've taken the road bike out a few places include that GWB ride in your video. It's a great sport.

Now....wear your helmet, wear your helmet, wear your helmet. It's helped me 3 times on the bike, once from my own stupidity....once from a tree branch....and once from a car (yes the car was at fault, does it matter).

You and I WILL ride together soon. I'm in running mode now, training for a May event. After that it's two wheels again (unless I get my buggy up on two at WWBB in April).

cheezycheese - 23-2-2017 at 04:07 PM

Looking forward to riding with you Marc.

skimtwashington - 23-2-2017 at 04:14 PM

Check out any of Danny MacAskill's videos. Don't think there's a better freestyls trick rider in the world..

He's another( even my 86 yr old mom loves watching this guy !..)..

Hey Cheez... y'know how to do any bike tune /repair stuff now that you're cycling? Helps to know stuff to keep going during breakdowns.

Wear your helmet in all these sports..Kiting... biking...

Combine biking AND kiting..

Not to be confused with bike kite..
