I've been wanting to get to Ivanpah since 2010, just never had the time off work. I am going to JIBE this year so I'm trying to figure out how to convince the Mrs. to let me go to IBX as well. My personal best on Jekyll Island is 48.6 mph on sand, I'd love to see what I can hit on the playa.

csa_deadon - 8-1-2018 at 06:17 AM

One hasn't lived till you have done a 8 mile reach on Alvord.

Whupp! Paul speaks great truths here . You should listen to him. It is getting closer and closer. Four nights for me this year (up from 3 both of the last two years). My bride has her birthday (29th I think) on April 2nd so I will make the drive early in the AM of the 3rd and make it in time for first rides Tuesday. Staying through Saturday this year. Stoked!

ColinW - 22-1-2018 at 03:12 PM

We're thinking about turning this event into more of a family vacation.
As such, I think basing ourselves in Vegas rather than the exciting metropolis of Primm would offer more access to touristy and relaxy type endeavours for the non-buggy types.
Last year we ended up making the drive into Vegas most evenings to eat and look around anyway, so I'd be making the same trip, just commuting daily to the playa and back.
Has anybody done this?
I hate the idea of giving up the $14 a night room at Bills. Does anybody know where I can match that in Vegas?:dunno::dunno::crazy::lol:
The Easter long weekend won't help make the rates any more reasonable I suppose.
Please feel free to chime in.
Thanks,
colin

Windstruck - 22-1-2018 at 04:34 PM

I would be pretty reluctant to stay anywhere in Vegas that asks only $14 a night. I suspect that would be the same rate as management offers their other, err, "guests" as an hourly rate. :o

Wind_dog - 23-1-2018 at 09:51 AM

Yeah, $14 bucks. Canadian?

There are some options to consider on VRBO.
(But not $14)

jeepersjoey - 25-1-2018 at 07:18 PM

Colin,

Give them the car, bring a tent and camp out with us!

There are plenty of people that will let you shower at the hotel. Or, do like me and stay one night in the hotel to shower and catch up with emails. Better yet, ignore the emails!

Paul

Morrie Williams - 5-2-2018 at 01:08 PM

Hotel code is here, SSI0331. I should have posted earlier, but missed it. MY FAULT, SORRY! :(

Randy - 5-2-2018 at 02:20 PM

Anybody know if you can get a buggy on an airplane? How about an ATB? Would a longboard work at IBX?

Randy - I like where you are going with this line of thinking - come on out!!!

I can't well comment on the transportation of a buggy in a plane but I can say that I have seen all manner of wheeled vehicles, boards, skates, etc. out there. If it has wheels and the playa has wind you can make it work.

The thing to keep in mind is the surface. It is rock hard dried mud. Wonderfully smooth in a lot of spots, but quite a bit rougher in others. Here is a nice picture of what to me looks like a pretty rough patch of mud.

[img][/img]

Because of this sort of bumpy surface, I would think ATB tires that are in the 6-9" diameter are what you want and you want them inflated as compared to hard material like street skateboards have.

Here is the sort of ATB that I'm thinking would be best out there:

https://reallygoodebikes.com/products/mbs-pro-95-mountainboa...

I'm not advocating for this particular board; rather, I'm just using it as an illustrative example.

The other thing to consider Randy is that the surface is like 40wt sandpaper, but at least it's as hard as concrete. That means when (sorry, not if) you fall on it at speed and you aren't protected with lots of plastic courage that it will likely wreck your whole day.

When I was out there with skates on I was decked out from head to toe. Others go with far less on their bodies, but for me, load me up!

As for buggies, I would happily share mine with you as I'm sure others would as well. There are always land sailors and buggies lying around just begging to be taken for a spin. I'm sure a nice guy like you with plenty of beer in hand could always find a nice ride. :D

Randy - 5-2-2018 at 06:46 PM

Thanks for the info Steve, but looks like I have schedule conflict anyway. If anything changes I'll pop back in the picture.

I love this design! Way to go Screwyfits!

ColinW - 11-3-2018 at 06:00 PM

I just booked Joey and myself!
Joey and I will be arriving mid week the week before IBX. His school break doesn't coincide. He'll fly home and Roberta will take his place. We'll be staying at Bill's first, and then move in to Vegas and I'll come out for the days. We may have to leave before the banquet to get home for the Monday after IBX as we'd like to take the scenic coastal route back up to the northland.

Hey Morrie, Do you know if there is a Buffalo Bills code I can use for part of the week before IBX, and pretend to be a land sailor for a few days?:ninja:
Or is it worth it? I don't know what the discount is...
colin

shehatesmyhobbies - 11-3-2018 at 06:03 PM

I'll be wishing I was there for my first trip, but with the new job comes a new vacation struggle. Won't even have more than two weeks vacation for another 3 years, and two are always reserved for WBB. But I will join you all one of these days for sure.

I hope to get to Wildwood, but it won't likely be until I retire... so anywhere from 3 to 25 years from now:rolleyes:

BeamerBob - 11-3-2018 at 08:15 PM

NALSA is the group there the week before IBX. You can check their website or Facebook pages to see if they have a code. Thanks for registering!

I don't have a hotel code for NALSA, the only code we have is for IBX and that is only good 3/31-4/7.

Bladerunner - 12-3-2018 at 03:28 PM

If I remember the only BIG discount was for weekends. The weekday rate isn't much different.

Hey Ken, are you coming this year? I don't see your name yet on the attendee list on www.ivanpahbuggyexpo.com. I really hope you can make it!

jeepersjoey - 12-3-2018 at 07:49 PM

Yea...I post empty ones so I can get my numbers up.

I strive to, one day, have as many posts as Windstruck!

Colin and Joey

jeepersjoey - 12-3-2018 at 07:51 PM

I look forward to seeing you both again this year.

I met you last year and was really impressed with what a great team you two were. Good for you!

I offered last year but you were too reserved or concerned about something and did not take me up on it. So...I offered again...join me for a ride to all the GPS points this year!

Paul

jeepersjoey - 12-3-2018 at 07:57 PM

Hi out there all you daemons of the wind. Looking forward to seeing you all and getting that beautiful beige dust everywhere. I might be bringing a PL buggy for sale and a land board. And best news of all I won't be needing to borrow a buggy. Proud almost owner of a brand new PL Big foot. All I gotta do is come up with a little cash in the next two weeks. Can't wait. Want to leave right now.

Unfortunately not. I had to take time off to help my Mother getting home from hospital.

On the bright side, She has bounced back so I am free to attend SOBB this year!

In honor of Ken (the one and true king of the playa on skates) I will be bringing my skate gear with me this year. Far from Ken's "balls like bull" approach to skated powerkiting, I intend to putz around in gentlemanly (read geriatric) fashion donned head to toe with plastic courage and free handing my StreetStar and NS3s. No hooking in for me on skates. After my freak gasoline fight accident a couple of years ago I swore to my wife that I wouldn't skate or ski hooked in, reserving that only for my buggy equipped with Jeff's AQR.

Any other skaters coming to IBX next month???? I saw a few folks are coming with mountain boards which is awesome.

Bladerunner - 17-3-2018 at 08:13 PM

DANG.
It would be fun to push you to a safe PB. You can always go faster when sharing the stoke. Be sure and take your GPS. It keeps you honest! The low friction makes flying unhooked a lot easier. You can stay out for longer than you may expect.

BOB CHILDS will always be the King when it comes to blades on the Playa. He created wheels of doom and hit 50mph. On them + Gifted us with this website!!!

Windstruck - 30-3-2018 at 06:51 PM

My bride just said the sweetest thing in the world:

"Why don't you go down Monday to Friday instead of Tuesday to Saturday". Coming in Monday!!!!! Can't wait. My bags are packed and I'm so ready to go.

Thanks for putting that together.

I know it isn't intentional but it's like one big ad' for Born Kites. I mean that in a good way.

I suspect Stephan may like to use some of that footage?

I know!!! That wasn't intentional, but it happened that I only flew Born Kites this year and my only footage was from my own helmet cam, so go figure.
