Where to buy spectra or dynema

ratindahat - 3-5-2007 at 03:14 PM

Hey all. Where can i buy spectra or dynema line in spools? Also what about sleeving kits?

Is the spectra they use for fishing the same kind of stuff or is it inherently different?

Thanks,

I expect most kite shops can get hold of line in bulk for you if you ask them. A couple of places online that I know that have bulk are:

Gone with the Wind Kites: http://www.gwtw-kites.com/shoponline.asp

and Quadrifoil, although they don't make/sell kites anymore the only thing they do sell is power kite line in bulk on spools (no idea if it's any good since I've never bought any from them, and I think you have to find a dealer, not sure if they sell direct):

Q-Power line is great, and expensive.

If you want white Spectra in bulk in 300 and 500# test at good prices try

Hang 'Em High Kites:

or Kite Studio:

I'll second gwtw-kites.com

I've bought many kites and much gear from him over the years. Very reilable if he's got the weight you are looking for.

so looking at prices makes me think that making your own line sets really will not save you much money. I guess i'll be buying this stuff when i go to bridle a kite.

Depends.

I buy all my line in bulk for my sport kites and make up lines from 8 - 65' in 30 - 150# sets. But for foils, you can really settle on a single line length and strength and be OK 95% of the time.

Plus there is the need to prestretch and equalize self made lines as well as sleeve them. I don't mind making up linesets but I don't see a huge need for it on the power kite side. I have three 25m sets and three 30m sets - and that 100% covers me (3 of them were self made). You could get by with one set of lines for all your foils if you did't mind not leaving them attached to the kite.

Its almost quicker to make new linesets than equalize stretched linesets but like I said - it is some amount of work and the savings aren't significant and you need to be smart when ordering on a roll so you can get enough to make up the desired lengths without too much left over or conversely not have enough to make sets that make sense.

It makes perfect sense.
