I was talking to someone today who jokingly said, "it seems like this buggy thing is a mid-life crisis" I went on to explain that it is not anything
like that. Mid-life crisis is turning 40 years old and going out and buying a little red sports car etc, to impress people. Why aren't people who
live to play golf everyday going through a "mid-life crisis"? And what I said about the sports car,,, I know there are people who do that type of
thing just because they like them. I have always been into the things that were different,, recumbent bikes, unicycles, and now power-kites and
starting the buggies. Its not a mid-life crisis for me,,, its freaking fun! You must be in decent physical shape, use your mind, there are a lot
worse things that one could be doing with their life.. What do you think?mongo - 18-5-2007 at 08:20 PM
I agree with you joecat. I am pushing mid 40's, and I am having great fun. They say that youth is wasted on the young, in some cases I think this is
true. I got into pwer kites when my son was growing up 13 or 14 years old. Now he is 18 he is off doing stuff that 18 year olds do, and not interested
as much. which means I get the kite all to myself.

I think that people see a kite and buggy and think that theres no way they could do that...That you have to be slightly a pretty well off middle aged
guy..like a yachter or a sports car driver....or they think that it is like kitesurfing which seems to be dominated by well off young dudes...so when
you mix the two it sounds as if the older dude is trying to reclaim his youth by doing something that is like a young man's sport but ok for an older
man.....the way I see it, those surfers have nice soft water to faceplant into...us buggiers/boarders have a very painful learning curve that usually
scares the #@%$#! out of us for a while.....we learn not how to buggy ...but how not to crash a buggy...but thats half the fun...there is no other
sport like it..I don't think any other sport makes a person go temporarily insane either...."oo ooo is it windy today" "how bout now" "what about
now".....
etc....acampbell - 23-5-2007 at 12:32 PM
I think my mid-life crisis was a pony-tail a few years back.
It is a different phase of life for me, however. I did 20 + years in Manhattan, NY running a 24/7 x 365 business
Now I live in Coastal Georgia and my official work uniform consists of cargo shorts and top-siders. Crisis? Uh-uh, just very fortunate.
True, when I try to describe to others what I do, most look at me like I have two heads, or just say "that's nice" (code for clueless). But when
people see it, they love it!
Last night at sunset it was low tide and 9-14 mph blowing straight off the water on to the beach. Took turns witha Montana 2 and Sabre 2 parked off
my shoulder, flying with one hand and wishing I had a beer for the other. Words I heard tossed to the wind from people both young and old as I gohsted
by were "awesome", "cool", "envious".
Even my wife, who finally got to see my in the bug the other day, had to reluctantly admit that it was "pretty cool".
No crisis, just new priorities. Still working on that beer holder...beachrights - 23-5-2007 at 02:59 PM
I think it is a matter of timing! I just turned 40 in March and got into power kiting about 2 years ago. The funny thing is I saw a guy about 50
flying a Flexi 8 and I was not going to be happy till I had one! Once I was able to breath again after seeing the high prices [on Ebay-thought it was
to be so cheap!] of the kite I bought one and have been looking at trees and weather reports since!
My wife even mentioned the 'mid life crisis' thing but
1) it had nothing to do with age
2) It does not need a key or have boobs! -These are the typical mid life crisis items right?! As Joe cat said: we all seem to be into slightly off
beat activities. This makes us originals in my humble opinion.
Heres what it comes down to: I don't go out drinking-I don't cheat and if I am wrong and this is a midlife crisis thing then I am glad I turned 40!!
Where the hell is my Bullet I'm going flying!:DBeamerBob - 23-5-2007 at 07:30 PM
I think I'm like you other old guys. I turn 45 this year but have always been into things that were different and that the majority of the populace
either didn't know about or couldn't do. I've also always been into things that fly. Remote control cox planes on strings. Frisbees, Aerobies,
boomerangs and a bunch of kites. I have 5 that I can steer now. I wanted to get into the kiteboarding thing but the training and support aren't
there. Power kiting fits right into that. It isn't a crisis, but just another progression in the way I live my life. Now I don't really want a
bigger kite but want to experience different ones. This may never stop!joecat - 23-5-2007 at 07:57 PM

Combats hit 15.4m, Jon has a 16m RM+, both fixed bridal monsters, I saw Eli on some monster of a Yakuza as well, so just need to anti up, grow a set

I'm a little younger at 32, but my interest in kiting has certainly turned some heads--and the faces have had that "oh grow up!" look! LOL However,
I have had a few people come up to me on the beach and ask about the sport.
Hey, if you're going to the beach anyway, why lay with your back on the sand when you could be plowing the beach with your face! No-brainer!!!
:saint:
Everyone I've shared the handles with has had a blast learning to fly and that's what it's all about--sharing the passion and enjoying life. As long
as it remains fun, challenging, and only moderately painful, I'm looking to fly! awindofchange - 28-8-2007 at 11:29 AM
One of the local buggiers here is a young 74 years and loves every minute of it. We buggy together every chance I get - he's retired so he rides
pretty much any time the wind blows. Ye got YANKED out of the buggy a couple years ago with his Little Devil 2.1 and broke his hip. He went into the
hospital on Saturday and
WALKED out on the following thursday. Back in the buggy a month or so later and still riding. He says it keeps him young, I think it keeps him young
and in shape.
I love kiting and also get the "two heads" look when I talk to new people about it. Like everyone else tho, once someone gets a hold of the kites
they have a really hard time putting them back down. I wish I would have found this sport 30 years ago. When I first got into power kiting and met
up with the locals, I was one of the "young-ens". Now turning 41 and heading out to NABX, I see a lot of younger people getting into the sport but
still feel like one of the "young-ens" when buggying with some of the legends that have been doing this for many more years.
Mid life crisis?? Nah....full life crisis that I hope never ends.Bladerunner - 28-8-2007 at 04:38 PM

I have to say that I LOVE OUR SPORT!!
There is something about being on the Playa with the wind blowing so nice and smooth dont even have to step back to launch the kite.....its already
trying to take off without you....then getting into the buggy and zipping along....
I want to be there now.....tee hee.....but as far as a Mid-Life Crisis...Im still a little off as far as any type of Crisis....Rofl.
So I say if you cant beat them make them join you.....and forgot the sport cars....young girls.....(ok maybe not the young girls) and hanging on and
enjoy the ride while you can.

What I love is that feeling you get when you pop the lines back and see the kite fill with air and then lift off. Sometimes I land my kite just to
watch it take off again.:singing:
I also like it when my bored 12 year old makes me get another kite out because I can't fly the one he wanted to fly for just a minute. He thinks I'm
cool in part because of this hobby. He brags about me to his friends. You can't buy that with money. I just need one more kite.Sthrasher38 - 30-8-2007 at 04:07 PM
Oh, you'll need more than one!BeamerBob - 30-8-2007 at 04:18 PM
I know. John D. Rockefeller once answered the question about how much more money does he really need with "just a little more". The just one more
kite attitude is my method of denial that allows me to justify the next one because "it" will be enough and therefore the last one. This isn't a mid
life crisis for me, but just a continuation of a lifestyle that loves to be outdoors, and doing something a little more on the edge than the general
public. Besides, I really have something to do now when we go to the beach.Sthrasher38 - 30-8-2007 at 04:31 PM

Hey, I started this topic back in May.... I had no idea that it was still continuing into the end of August. I have to give myself credit,,, this
was a good topic......Since I started this in May I have been flying the kites just about every week. Now that the summer is over I have been
breaking out the buggy whenever posible. Based on the posts above and my own experience now I have to say to answer that persons question,,,,,,, NO
this is not a Mid-life crisis it only becomes a crisis when the Wind Stops Blowing....BeamerBob - 9-10-2007 at 06:58 PM
This hobby is much better for you than medication or going to meetings too! I just hope my wife doesn't cruise through here and see some of these
guys that have dozens of kites. She doesn't see the possibilities of how many kites a flyer could end up with in this. She thinks I'm on the fringe
now with 4 foils. I'm not sure she completely believes me about these other loaner kites that are coming in the mail. I guess she'll know the deal
when I put them back in the mail.Pablo - 9-10-2007 at 07:37 PM
Well, put it this way, I spent the day sitting at the park in the rain watching boats go by waiting for the predicted clearing and 30-40mph winds,
never happened, but I got in a couple wet rides across the park and went home happy to have gotten out.WolfWolfee - 10-10-2007 at 05:51 AM
I guess I live in the land of wind. Some people call Winnipeg, Windy peg oh darn. I have never had my small kites out so much as winds are in the 15
to 25 mph range lots.
Been having great fun but still flying alone never seem to catch up with the crew, think they like the warm weather and me just got to have wind...lol
50 years old this year and still going strong.
Cheersjoecat - 10-10-2007 at 07:48 AM
Got out again last night on the Wildwood New Jersey beach.. The beach is pretty big and I had the entire thing to myself... Winds were good, ok,,,
but the direction was not the best, sort of an angle... The other day I was there with maybe 7-8mph winds was about to leave and the wind changed
direction and kicked in like a son-of-a-..... being realatively new,,, 9 months or so I was almost afraid to sit in the buggy with my 2 meter,,,, but
then threw caution to the "wind" and sat down,,, took off like a rocket,, cool as hell. Most twenty year olds around here wouldn't think of doing
that.........NPWfever - 31-10-2007 at 09:30 PM
Yay! i got the up side this time! (in like forever) I found kiting at 15 hooray! I guess this is like my "beginning life crisis" LOL! no jk jk its not
a crisis its just really flipping fun!!!!! wee its cool tho cuz i am passing it around colorado (our school now has a kiting club) in which i provide
kites (for now) and the buggy/skateboard/ATB/doomwheels. And we are looking into a snowkiting field trip this winter. And a few people have given me
their E-mails and have since bought a 1-3 meter kite. And my favorite is when you are flying and another guy sees you from the road and decides to go
get his kite and come back. (already happened like thrice) in like 2 months. Yeah i havnt been kiting for very long. LOL! and i already need more!!!!

I am 42, and started kiting at 40. My wife finds it strange that suddenly I got into kiting at that age. She thinks it's my middle life crisis and I
want to proof myself into what she calls an extreme sport. I don't. I would have started younger if I had been introduced to it before. For me it was
just an extension to my lifetime skiing hobby, but when I tasted it, it got me and now I just love the wind and many forms of kiting. So glad to see
that lot of people above 40 here. I keep telling my wife that kiting is not just for kids.Sthrasher38 - 14-11-2007 at 05:38 PM

going to do it,,, not just give it a try..... I have been reading the landboarding section of PKF and I am picking up all the tips and pointers....
Not looking at doing any jumps or anything just want to get moving and have some fun,,,, I assume just like the buggy,,, I started out saying that if
I got going 15mph that would be good for me.... then of course once I hit 36mph I am consantly looking for faster speed. Any tips or advise?joecat - 2-3-2008 at 09:05 PM

Mid Life Crisis
Sand-Yeti - 4-3-2008 at 10:56 PM
I suppose mid life is about 40. At that age I was SCUBA diving and windsurfing in the Red sea out of the Magic Kingdom (Saudi Arabia).
I didn't feel like I was having a crisis, just having fun more like.
Now 24 years later I suppose you could say that I'm having an old age crisis. I started buggying 7 years ago and have been buggying every week
(subject to wind availability) since I started.
Most of my buggying buddies are half my age yet I can run rings around all of them when buggying. If you have seen any of my vids (posted a couple on
here recently), it will give you an idea what I do. Where I buggy in quite challenging because of the three dimensional terrain and in summer shade
temperatures can reach 130°F. (50°C+)
I kite-buggy purely for fun & nothing more.
During my whole life, people have been telling me to grow up.
I will give you a tip from this ancient buggier.
Don't listen to such advice or you will grow old.KYTE SLINGER - 5-3-2008 at 06:48 AM

hey Terry,,, Good thoughts there........... I am not sure if we met down here last year,,,,, We had a little buggy bash thing this past fall and
there is a group of us that meet here on the wildwood beach... I live only 15 minutes from wildwood so I get to the beach pretty often... Do you
know Brian or Don or Petra...... we have a group called new jersey buggy club or in the forum you will see the post under Wildwood Buggy Bash... if
would be great to have you come down when we meet. Also Luke from new york comes down once in awhile.. he may even be from Long Island... I have
about 15 videos of buggying in the wildwoods on youtube... you can check them out search my screename of "joecat818" maybe you will recon some of us
in the vids or the slide shows.... you should diff see some familar places there......... As far as NABX... if may be a few more years before I can
talk my wife into that one......... I am in the same boat as you,,, just turning 46 been buggying for about one year and expecting my first two land
boards any day now,,,,,, got one for my 10 year son. He is handling the kite pretty well.. What kid would not want to ride down the beach on a
landboard pulled by a kite,,,,,,,,,, beats skateboards any day.............joecat - 13-3-2008 at 06:56 AM
And Islandgirl,,,, you are right of course,,,,,,, I haven't grown up yet and most likely wont//////// I watched the video of your husband riding
there,,, looked like a pretty cool beach area,,, where was that exactly?Lobo - 14-3-2008 at 07:56 PM
Well, I'll be 60 in June and just found power kiting. Just ordered my first kite. Don't even have it yet. Gulp....nobody told me this was an
"extreme sport"?!?!?!?:wow: I wonder if it's possible to cancel that order????
Just kidding! :singing: This looks like it will be sooooooo much fun. Can't wait! I love reading all the posts you folks contribute. Absolutely
great forum!!

I can't wait to hear your first post after flying it the first time! Let's just call it "mid life excitement". No crisis at all.Lobo - 14-3-2008 at 08:22 PM
Thanks, BeamerBob, for the "well-wishing"....and for your help so far in it all!

I feel the same way. I'm always talking about kites and letting people fly my tamer kites. Then it is "which one should I get and where can I get
one from" questions. I guess you could get people involved in worse activities.Lobo - 19-3-2008 at 06:20 AM

yea, Where is it? I have been waiting for a week.islandgirl414 - 19-3-2008 at 05:09 PM
Well it's taken me next to forever to get back in here again....that real life stuff keeps getting in the way....:sniff:.....while you guys are off
tryin' to work out whether it's a midlife crisis or just another stage of puberty....us girlies have to pick up the slack.... but before i start off on my waffle....I gotta say thanks for the entertaining read
this morning.....this is a great forum!!........and now for the
catch up....
Terry.....our kids friends think we're the coolest thing since sliced bread too (naturally our own kids think we are old and passed it!!) but all are
up for flyin' kites....like BeamerBob says......there could be far worse activities to get them involved in!!.....and i think you're right....it's the
company that you associate with that keep ppl young at heart...ever notice how you can see some ppl in their 30's who seem as ancient as Noah....and
then guys in the 60's + who can still be as giggly as school girls??......I don't think it's just a male thing....it's just that you guys are more
'obvious' about it...(and possibly it's just an excuse for us women to understand you men better...)....eg....got a call from my sister this week....55 yrs old....never had a kite in her hands but has been itching
to.....she's organizing a family outing this weekend solely so that she can give it a try....I think she falls under the mid-life excitement
analogy!...
as for the youngin's....we have a 10 year old lad too.....loves the landboard......not the best at it but is certainly doin' ok and enjoys it....but
then anything to do with kiting he loves....:P
Joecat.....hubby was ridin' at Bribie Island....in Queensland Australia.....which is where we are from........if you liked that beach...there's a few shots in this vid of another beach that he loves which is up near
Bundaberg.....beach as far as the eyes can see.........oh and as a bonus....this
vid also fits in very nicely with this thread.....
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Absolutely marvelous video! I lOVED it! :singing: Couldn't tell, could ya?!? Ha! I love that part "always
look on the bright side of death" Ha! That's great! "Before you draw your terminal breath!!" Ha!
Thanks alot for that one. And.....now I have a new use for my treadmill.....actually it'll probably be the ONLY use....heh heh.

Hey Island girl.... excelent video,,,,, very funny.... I have heard that song before but now it has new meaning........ interesting with the
landboards also,,, I just got my first board two days ago. Put it together and now waiting for opp to get out with it... never really been on one
before but I think its going to be a blast.... see I am still regressing,,, its all
good>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.leebrianh - 20-3-2008 at 09:13 AM

Thought I would re-circulate this topic. Its been stale since 3/20/08 Any new advice or comments?ragden - 28-3-2011 at 09:30 AM
Keep flying bro, Wildwood Buggy Bash is right around the corner. Houston AirHead - 28-3-2011 at 09:49 AM
I don't buggy.
In my opinion, the best high-wind kite is a 2-line sport/stunt kite.:eureka:truman - 28-3-2011 at 03:59 PM
When I am flying a kite I actually feel like a kid again all giddy It is hard to describe the feeling but I don't feel that way doing most other
things.lad - 28-3-2011 at 04:52 PM
Over 50 when I started.
Needed some greater thrills in life, I suppose.
Wasn't interested when my bones were more bouncy.
Now I'll prob. just be pounding them into sawdust....joecat - 27-3-2012 at 10:45 AM
Wow, started this topic on May 19th, 2007. And it had an entry recently as March 3rd, 2011 by Lad........Well, its only its two months short of five
years! So i would have to say that this experiment of testing wheather or not it was just a "Mid-Life Crisis" is complete.........Power Kiting is not
just a Mid-Life Crisis" its cronic! There you have it....... POWER KITING IS CRONIC!lad - 27-3-2012 at 01:46 PM
Also, my Mid-Life Crises seems Chronic 4mylifetime - 27-3-2012 at 05:28 PM
I most certainly am in a mid life crisis according to my better half and kids.
Last August I saw a kiteboarder on Lake Simcoe and thought - cool, need to look into that...
Watched some You-tube videos and a month later was booked for lessons with Sam Medesky at Sauble Beach.
While waiting for lessons I bought a Hydra 350 and wore it out (when we had wind).
Struggled to get up on the board and never quite got it prior to freeze up.
Now I have the gear below and am addicted. With our crappy winter was still able to get snow kiting several times and reached speeds of 60 km, WHAT A
BLAST!-Thanks Markite. Never even got to transition to the snow board as not enough snow on ice. Now am waiting to get on the water and finally get
rocking. Booked for last week of April in Hatteras. Best place to learn so I'm told.
Now I...look at wind differently, (like a cat watching a leaf in the wind),
Now I...have trouble focusing on anything except kiting,
Now I...can't seem to have enough "stuff",
If you don't make any mistakes, you are not learning anything....
BTW my Phantom 2 is on order, and I turned 50 in Jan and became a grandfather in Feb.
Yeah, kind of in a crisis, looking forward to more mistakes, God I love it.nocando - 27-3-2012 at 09:45 PM
Hi all I am 21 with 37 years experience, i got into kiting after a stint racing downhill MTB, but I crashed big time breaking a collar bone. I had to
do something and kites and a buggy were the go.
My peers think that I am a candidate for a funny bin, for travelling halfway acroos the globe, to hook up with other nutters and charge around a dry
lake at break neck speed, and I why did you go alone.
Because I can and will, I havent looked back am a hardcore tree and flag watcher again.
in my youth I was a pole dancer (windsurfer )airin - 28-3-2012 at 09:10 AM
Hah, this is a great thread, glad it has resurfaced!
I flew single line kites a few decades ago. And then I saw the dual line stunters. I flew them too. Then I saw the buggy guys down at the Long Beach
kite festival. I wanted to buggy too, but how, where, with who? Rock climbing and white water kayaking took the spotlight, the kites came out now
and then when I was too tired to climb or paddle.
Fast forward two years ago, I was 54 and taking my friend's kid to a local kite festival. I saw a display of Rev's. The control and precision looked
impressive. I started to fly Rev's that summer. And would see Bladerunner every week or so as he ripped across the field, arc powered, floating
through the air at the end of each run, 'whoop whooping'.
Bladerunner is a super friendly guy, hugely passionate about flying and a great teacher. Before I knew it I was hooking into an arc and Frankenbuggy
was on loan to me. Finally, by the following summer and at the age of 55, I was learning to kite buggy. Sure it took three decades to get there but,
mid life crisis, nope, just never enough time to do all the cool sports that there are out there to do!csa_deadon - 28-3-2012 at 08:15 PM
If you never grow up, how can it be a mid-life crisis? hiaguy - 29-3-2012 at 06:17 PM
age 29 - flew my first 2-line stunter
age 48 - flew my first 3-line trainer
age 50 - flew my first Rev. and first 4-line traction
can't get enough static flying...
kids think I'm crazy and my wife doesn't understand
age 51 - just bought a buggy and can't wait for WBB
mid-life crisis? maybe. but at this rate I expect it to last a long time :wee:
