NABX 2008

 Pages:  1

gbrown - 15-6-2007 at 10:09 AM

I know it is a long way off but do we know the dates for NABX 2008. My spring schedule gets kind of full and I don't what to commit to something and have a conflict.

ripsessionkites - 15-6-2007 at 10:14 AM

next years dates would be good to know now for me, as I need to bid for my vacation dates. thx

Tigger - 16-6-2007 at 12:05 AM

In the past NABX always followed the NALSA event which is the last full week in March.

Rental of the tent, port-a-potty's, etc are a joint venture between the two events.

deanaoxo - 10-7-2007 at 08:51 AM

How would you feel if we preceded the NALSA folks?

Would we have more constant wind? Would it work out for the sponsors?

Would you come?

I'll have to think about it!.........aj:lol:

gbrown - 10-7-2007 at 10:18 AM

According to the NALSA site their dates for 2008 are March 22 to 29

So I am assuming that the traditional NABX would be April 1 to April 6?

If we were before would that be March 11 to 17 so we could include a weekend and the traditional Tuesday to Sunday?

The traditional schedule seems to work well because NALSA is Sat to Sat and NABX is Tue to Sunday.

I will be there either week but need to know to not conflict with a vacation in Fla with my wife.

Taper123 - 10-7-2007 at 12:50 PM

My magic 8 ball could not make up it's mind... so I'll plan on coming either way!

kitemaker4 - 10-7-2007 at 09:26 PM

Hey Dean

Just tell me when and where and I will be there.

Counting the days already.

Susan

jonesing4wind - 13-7-2007 at 04:20 PM

the old saying about March "is in like a lion......." Does that mean better wind at the beginning of March?

On another note, the weather might be a little cooler. I know I am not the only person who was a tad warm at this years event. And the guys with the hand-pump water misters were awesone!

Seany

Pablo - 13-7-2007 at 05:56 PM

Ahh, nothing says NABX quite like tenting it through a sandstorm.

Looking forwards to NABX 2008, no way I'll be missing this one.

Kiteboarder2B - 13-7-2007 at 11:50 PM

Well I know the weather is only relative to the time at which it is occurring, but this year the wind was blowing like crazy all during and the week prior to NALSA. Plus as Sean said, temps are cooler, but remember this will be most noticeable at night! I personally, being a desert rat that is, thought the temps were a bit on the chilly side. So basically starting a few weeks earlier would be better for those not used to the desert, less heat during the day and more familiar temps at night.

So my vote goes for the week prior to NALSA. Plus, maybe if we go first and they start hearing and seeing how much fun we are having, then maybe more and more will join us than already are.

coreykite - 14-7-2007 at 10:16 AM

Hey Sailors,

The old SBBB was held before the NALSA event.
Had a better chance of having rain that early.
That's one reason the event moved to after NALSA.

The temps (actually the humidity) were unusual last April.
Not typical for that time of year.

Nothing like it is now with daytime temps over 110 degrees F.

I don't believe there is any reason to over-react to the weather any one year.

Typically we have a better shot at agreeable winds and temps in April than mid-March.

I've noticed the weather is noticeably better the week before y'all get here and then again the week after y'all leave.

Wait... Think logically for a moment.
Does anything we do have any real effect on the weather?
Guessing which week to have the event is utterly silly.

We take what we get.
I'd rather be in a rain-soaked parking lot with all of you, than not.

zloty - 15-7-2007 at 12:04 PM

Here is a idea. How about extend whole think to 2 weeks event  .Then everyone can chose days they like.I'm sure it would cost more but for some that would be double fun. We would get then way more riding days.We still could have saturday party in tent and all.On the other hand We have pre event.Just my 2 cents.

kitemaker4 - 15-7-2007 at 08:08 PM

I vote to keep the event as is. If it has been a wet winter then after the land sailors gives more time to let the lake bed dry out.

Mid March would work great for the New Tech Kite gang.

Rye - 19-7-2007 at 02:52 PM

Not sure if I can make this my first time there, but I'm sure going to try and either time is great if enough notice.

jellis - 29-7-2007 at 12:06 PM

My vote goes for the week prior to NALSA. I usually make the trek to NABX to buggy not to bake in the sun. If there is a little overcast, cooler temps, steadier winds (less thermals and dust devils), pristine dessert (we would be the first event on the desert) just to mention a few reasons to have the event back to mid March. In my opinion I would rather have a lite rain day that restores the condition of the lake bed to a day of over 100 degree temps any day.
Bake or buggy, what did you come for?

krocdoc - 31-7-2007 at 08:39 PM

Earlier gets my vote also.

windzup - 6-9-2007 at 07:41 AM

As Corey stated the weather comes and goes when it pleases...
so it doesn't matter when to hold the event based on weather. It is entirely possible for it to be a wet March and April if its a strong winter, I've seen two feet of snow dump on Mt. Charleston above Vegas on Easter, and then have that turn into 6 inches of water on the lake bed that sat for a month. That's how one of my first SBBB's went down, hanging with the crew on Roach lake for the week.

Early might beat the rain, or be in the rain....later might beat the rain but be in a puddle. Either way, I think the funnest time I head was playing in the mud with a hundred buggyless buggiers waiting for the train to rescue our rides from the lake that should not be. Damn that last dinner in the rain was good, I swear it only looked like a couple of drops falling:yes:

So my vote is later...based on the fact that many powerkiters have evolved into Snowkiters in the last few years, and we are as desperate to squeeze every moment of winter out of mother nature and we try not to come out of the hills before the deer return up in the Spring. End of March is a beautiful time to kite Alaska, or anywhere above 9,000 feet.... April is a great time to Buggy..IMHO>>:spin:

See you on the playa anytima

I will be there!! First time for everthing. Is my little rockville going to hold up on the dry lake? I dont have a race buggy. But know this I will be trying to look like one. No need to worry this year will be great no matter what the weather. I will get to meet all of you! See kites I have never seen before. And get to see more fellow kiters all together than I will most likely ever see again! I can't wait!:singing:

long lines in low winds (30meter) , short (20m) in hight winds. And a twelve pack of oysters for the balls!!! Go get your 'ret hot' sauce from aj for thy balls. Make sure it's not expired....

Kiteboarder2B - 9-2-2008 at 06:45 PM

In really nuclear winds, if for dome crazy reason I decide to put down the wing, I've been known to fly foils on 15 ft. linesets or just straight off the bridals.

when you register at NABX's website, you can view the attendees list.

you're welcome to a sit in my ApeXX (fullrace) if you want.
dunno if we're bringing a tandem kit right now, as weight seems to be our biggest issue with US Airways. They seem to have the worst weight/dimension allowance. Ruudje from XXtreme is trying to make his way from Euro to NABX. He might bring a tandem kit for me. Look us up down there, (U-Turn Banners)

As for line length .... short lines on either big or small kite.

68-69!! 72-73!! Are you crazy?? I wet myself at 20-30 I guess I will be needing some depends for the playa.:smilegrin:I think 60mph will be a record for a rockville if it dosen't vibrate apart. I can't wait. I will be in for a treat. I have only been buggying for a few months so I am still learning the basics. You know hanging on and how to turn. Big stuff like that still.

Yes he is! :frog: I missed that year but I heard Eli and Luk were sling-shotting off the big dust devils to get those speeds! (72.8 setting the world record)

Crash - 10-2-2008 at 11:13 PM

thought it was 78 ,ah, whats a few mph after ya hit 70 anyway .with this freak weather we get sometimes .Eli & luk might break that 100 mph.he'd have to put more than six pounds of weight, hey, does anyone remember the buggy that came into camp and ripped that guys truck down the side like a sardine can.that had weight and I almost went grabbing it ,then found out ,you could loose ya arm.Eli ,I got clocked once by my buggy ,I don't know "HOW" you do it !

bison - 11-2-2008 at 09:25 AM

Terry,

Are you talking about the time that Bob Childs lost his buggy in an enduro race? This is the first I heard that it had added weight!

I was helping with the race that year and watched it happen.

Gotta laugh when I hear the stories from that day. Actually Luk had given up trying to beat Eli's 68.9 he was only getting was 68.1, He decided to come back to camp and hit 72.3 on his way back. He had all he could do to stop before camp.

I took a few runs that day should of took the GPS on one of them. Got caught in a big gust that took out PL and JH. I was flying a 2meter and just went with it. Probably the fastest I had ever gone.

Short lines= crazy kite, if you go too short. 15m or on handles, you loose much performance and you can't see out of your buggy.

Last year (2007) I used 25m on a 3m Yakuza got around 65mph without even trying. The issue was slowing down with long lines, the kite seemed to power up, so much I saw the bushes coming and ditched. whooo hooo., fun fun.... My FAVORITE line lenght is 25m for the desert, If I hit up roads in the middle of no-where I go to 20m.

we made some 40-50ft sets, and the kites became psyco. Fun to test thy skillz, not fun too cruise.

Luk and i were pulling tandems, I rec. 30m sets for this, Luk on a 25 m set got slammed while towing, I could barely hang on, but we were pulling passengers to 55mph or higher. Luk was accelerating much quicker with the 25m sets, I think thats why he had out-o-buggy experience.

Always forgetting the big guy that was 1mph behind you and loaned you the GPS LMAO. Big John

Hey Bison if memory serves me correctly Luk set that speed on the way out bro as he rode back in a vehicle and we have been giving him S*** about that every since.

kitemaker4 - 15-2-2008 at 08:55 AM

Hey Sthrasher38

I fly nasa wings all the time with the buggy. They are great in gusty inland wind. There are several of us now that are flying them over here. You can fly them on handles with no line and any lenght line set you wish to use. In parking lots we fly them on handles or maybe a 10 ft. line set. Just remember to move you hands down the handles some because they need more brake input than foils. Once you figue out how much brake to apply then it is clear sailing.

Susan

awindofchange - 15-2-2008 at 11:28 AM

As Susan (the NPW goddess) has said, just fly em right off the handles and they work great. Most of the people on the playa here use 15-25 foot lines just to get the kite out a bit. Line length doesn't have the same effect on the NPW's as it does on the other foils. Use the brakes a lot more and have fun. Don't forget to get in on the rag-flapper race!

See ya on the playa!

bugymangp - 15-2-2008 at 01:08 PM

i fly my npw`s on 12ft lines and smoked everybody at the races.
susan might be a npw goddess but i`m the king. LOL
see you at the races.

kitemaker4 - 15-2-2008 at 01:37 PM

Hey Glenn

I am not so sure about the "king" title. This year there will be more competition in the rag flapper races. It should be a lot of fun.

Is it time to leave.

Susan (npw goddess)

mak - 15-2-2008 at 01:40 PM

shorter lines the better;)

Tried a session once with my 7m on 25m lines. Thought my arms were going to to ripped from my sockets. Was funny though as a nearby guy was instructing a bunch of people and was telling that npw's were just plain un-useable in a buggy, cue many fast runs up and down the beach with said npw:singing:

Far more fun on just handles direct to bridle (and agree with the extra brake bias, it just works:lol:)

Paul

Sthrasher38 - 15-2-2008 at 05:28 PM

Thanks everyone I will try right off the handles for awhile Then for the playa and rag flapper race I will add a little length To see how that goes. I think I need some more practice really before I race but we'll se how it goes. I don't want to look like a total baby out there.:P But ya know what who really cares. At least if I lose I can say I was beat by the best.:tumble: How many days before we can leave?

bugymangp - 15-2-2008 at 06:57 PM

hey trashter
whats cool about flying npws on short lines is.
you just roll up your lines around your handles and stuff
the kite back in the bag. when your ready to fly again just hold the kite in one hand and unwind the lines with the other hand letting the line fall at you feet. then you can just throw the kite in front of you. shake the kite and your flying.
very hard to get tangles that way. I HATE TANGLES.
see you on the race track. i`ll be the one going by in a blur. LOL.
i don`t think i should tell you some of my npw race serects. but what the hell. its a good idea to have a few npws set up with lines and handles so if the wind picks up or drops off you can which kites in seconds.
i hope i don`t get flamed for this. LOL

bbrex - 15-2-2008 at 08:11 PM

Hey Glenn you may be the reining npw king (your living in the past) but that will all change in a blurr this year. Can't wait to smoke ya out there. I have many secret weapons this year to keep you guessing.
Future NPW king!!

I'm trying to register for nabx but I keep getting this message...

"ERROR:
You have attempted to access this form from an unauthorized referer. Access denied!"

Hopefully Bob will figure it out for me in the morning. Don't work too hard guy.

Update: I'm registered! I tried it again this morning but still got the error message, so I copied and pasted the nabx link directly into IE's url bar and went from there. This time it took my info when I hit the Continue button. Just a heads up for anyone else that may have this problem.

The hangin tree is after our safety meeting ,right ? I plan to grab a NPW from Sue .Will you help set up the brake Glenn ? I used Toms at beach and found holding the top of handle better than middle but then brake needed more.maybe I should just fly in the middle of handle, what do you do ?

Sthrasher38 - 16-2-2008 at 08:51 AM

Question. Is it really dusty out on the playa? I am kinda worried about my can getting blasted by dirt. Is it like at the beach? Dirt blowing across the ground? I have never been so I dont know Do we need goggles?

Sthrasher38 - 16-2-2008 at 08:57 AM

I need a good link to so saftey gear. I gotta look good if nothing else at NBAX. Thanks. Racer # 72

kitemaker4 - 16-2-2008 at 09:51 AM

Goggles is not a bad idea. We were out on Elmers a few years ago and the winds were blowing small rocks and they would hit you in the head and face. I sure was glad I had a full face helmet on then.

You will need knee pads, elbow pads, helmet, gloves and goggles. I also wear long sheeve shirts and long pants to keep me covered up in case I have a obe.

barnes - 16-2-2008 at 04:18 PM

Looks like there is Comic Book Retailer Summit around the same time as NABX....perhaps I can use that as my cunning excuse to go..

USA_Eli_A - 16-2-2008 at 04:31 PM

barnes - 16-2-2008 at 09:23 PM

Any excuse will do!

mecdave - 17-2-2008 at 05:43 AM

So I'm standing out on the playa waiting for the wind to pick up and suddenly my head jerked up and looked back towards Vegas.

"What's up" said somebody standing nearby?

"I just heard a top fuel dragster make a pass!" I said.

"Oh yeah, the Sand Drag Nationals are going on right behind Buffalo Bills!" he said.

There's your excuse (assuming they'll be there that week too). ;)

Sthrasher38 - 17-2-2008 at 11:35 AM

Does anyone know what the weather is like there right now? How far is vegas from B. bills?:puzzled:

hey terry
sure i`ll set up your npw for you. just make a 10,12ft line set and have a spare set of handles ready.
one more good thing have for safely gear is a dust mask. you know the kind you use when working in dusty condions.
i always bring a few.

bugymangp - 19-2-2008 at 12:37 PM

hey terry
all is fine with my mother. health wise. but she`s getting bad with her memory. just last night she flooded out my basement washing clothes.
the car is other story. i`m having a hard time with the clutch and pressure plate. i ordered new brake linings. they are a speical type and they got cracked in shipping. but on the bright size i got all the oak flooring done just waiting to go in once i get the clutch problem taken care of. the car as been keeping so busy i can`t even think of nabx yet. i`m hoping to get the car back on its wheels by then. but it don`t look good. haven`t talked to AL in months last i heard he got a horse running around his house.

ickyrex - 19-2-2008 at 02:59 PM

Stupid Question..... Is there a laundromat @ Primm?
If not, where is the closest one? I was considering bring much less clothing this year to save weight.
More toys....less clothes.

kitemaker4 - 19-2-2008 at 04:01 PM

Good question Jason. I have not seen one but that does not mean that they do not have one.

Susan

mecdave - 19-2-2008 at 04:42 PM

There used to be one in the onsite RV park, but now that that's gone so is the laundry room. Sorry, that's all I got.

Crash - 19-2-2008 at 05:46 PM

Glenn don't feel bad ,my wife didn't reach 50 and she does stuff like that. Moms such a sweet women just understand when you reach that age ,ya gonna poop in your depends when your kite buggying at 83.You might not know your name or where you live but you still know how to kite buggy.I'm like that now but thats cause of the funny stuff we have at the safety meetings;).Make sure you use gloves & mask when sliding the presure plates in .the carbon and compounds are very harmfull if breathing in .I'll try to bring a mask for Ivanpah also. Will you be going stock or some nice light mods that give you alittle more.Carbon drive shaft and universals ect.. are sweet but expencive and ya don't really need unless it a show car and your crawling underneath.Cool, Your rooming with Jason this year,Jason ,Staff knows me now so when were there I'll get one of the girls to do a load for Glenn ,yourself and me with wash. The machine at rv park is gone but they have one that I pay them to do for us .Funny ,one of the girls wanted to hang after work cleaning rooms and try landsailing with me . I'll take her this year.Anyone else that needs wash done can get a hold of me ,I'll work it out with one of the girls that clean the rooms.I need room for toys not clothes ,have to make room for the trip home will all the new junk too.:D Glenn ,do you pack your glass flag poles for under the plane or carry them .Was concerned about them walking on and cracking them.maybe a sail bag with the mast for blokart will save them.:puzzled:Jason,it not a stupid question cause thats the first thing I asked last time .who wants to carry stinky clothes home .Just hope nobody cough's in there underwear before I work it out with the girls.:D You guys have as much fun as I am with gearing up for Ivanpah and hope to see yall soon .:)

bugymangp - 20-2-2008 at 10:58 AM

hey terry
i don`t bring any banner poles with me. i just borrow a few when i get there. i borrowed a few from dave k one year and both of them snapped from high winds. he didn`t want me to pay for them but i wouldn`t feel right not paying for something i broke. so i did pay him.
with my 30` i want to bring the car back to 1930.
i just spent 300$ on nuts and bolts. when my friend put the body back together he used hex head nuts and bolts. they are not right. the car used square nuts and slotted bolts. there should not be any phillip head screws on the car.
i have this old man coming to look at my clutch problem this weekend. i found a brand new 1930 presssure plate and its still not right. now i have 2 plates and they both don`t work on the car. it might be something i`m over looking.
i got the trans rebuilt( be me) and had it glass beaded. the trans case is as smooth as glass.
speaking of buggying in NJ. there is no place to buggy in new jersey anymore without getting thrown out. the only place is wildwood. to long of a drive for one day buggying.

Crash - 20-2-2008 at 11:42 PM

Howdy Glenn,I'll bring banner pole and see what happens  Dave Kennedy was good for things like that.Truely missed Man!Be carefull with the pressure plate cause you don't want to go back in there once off the lift.send me some pics of this car ,Thats really beat that ya cant buggy anywere ,now I know why you give your all when your out buggying:lol:Don't work to hard and save your energy for the NPW race ,your gonna need it cause there hunting ya down from what i'm reading on forum ;) TTYS Glenn

Hey Jason
One thing we've done before is to pick up a bottle of washing detergent, come off the playa and wash a pair of shorts/t-shirt in the sink and leave it to dry and just keep switching with a second pair - sometimes they dry overnight. Then we leave our wash liquid and cooler and anything we bought for the cleaning staff if they want it.
The online info says they have a laundry service - but not a laundromat
