pulleys on brakes?

art_lessing - 17-10-2007 at 02:32 PM

I saw a set of handles that had pulleys on the break end...the brake lines went through the pulleys and to the power lines...what is this?...It looks interesting

Anyone?

I believe those are the creation of Jon Ellis. He has pics here on his MSN groups site.

"Power Handles"; Supposed to provide power-steering like control on larger kites. Perhaps Jon can chime in and elaborate more on them?

I've been using a set of them on my larger kites for a while now, Normally I had to fly my larger kites on something stupid like 18" long handles, Now they're on 12-14" handles, with the brake line leader going from the power line, through the pulley and off to the brakes, you get somethink like a 2.5/1 ratio, brake end of handle moves 1", brake line moves in 2.5"

Keeps the ends of the handles out of the ground/tires/gut.

Would they do anything, for a smaller kite besides, having to use even smaller movements, of the handles???

I wouldn't bother putting pulleys on anything from somewhere around the 7m and smaller mark. They reduce the length of handle you need while still giving you a lot of throw, but they do increase the pressure needed to apply them a bit.

Only real benefit is that you can get lots of throw with short handles. My 13 was supposed to use 18" handles.

Ok... I was curious about that, I like the idea, of any addon modifications that will upgrade the handling/flying/looks of any kite, without to much trouble & readily available to do without to much $$$ input...

J. Ellis and I have been using the power handle for years now. We start using the power handles on our JoJo Rm+ 4 meter kites all the way up to the 16 meter. There are many many pluses to these handles for one you can make a really big kite wingtip turn which is a big big plus. With the smaller kites and the big kites you can actually feed the kite so much more breakline to actually sheet the kite and dump excess winds off the trailing edge of the kite. The handles we use start at about 12 3/4 inches to 15 or 16 inches I have forgotten would have to look at my specs as it has been a couple of years since I have had to make a set up. The handles come into play a lot more when you get to the point of extreme that Jon and I like to push the kites , but for sure there are more advantages to these handles when properly made and I can't stress that factor enough than just turning the kite faster. I would not recommend substituting cheap pulleys on these handles Harkens are the only way to fly. Give a set a go and tell us what you think.

Gonna have to fix me up a set for the "Buster", it moves really slow with shorter handles & takes more brake pull to get any movement from the kite... Still need to find the correct length for the Power & Brake leads on the Handles...

(Would doubled 200lb polyester "Power & Brake" leads ON the handles Work)???

UpDate; Doubled 200lb polyester "Power & Brake Leads" on the Pulley-Handles work... To Bad I didnt have enough wind today, to give them & the Kite much of a workout...

2-3-4 mph off & on just doesnt give much air movment without WORKIN the kite to keep it in the air...

This should link you to John's drawing.

Thanks snowbird as I even forgot where it was. Now you guys have done it the secret is out. LOL Big John gave a good description of the pulley handles. If you are lazy I still sell them just email me at kbss@iinet.com.
http://kitebuggyspeedshop.com/accessories.htm
The new models come with a new adjustable knot (double larkshead) instead of the three knots on the power lead.
Email the shop or call and I can help you through building a set, but it is easy to get one set then copy them.

Well got me some nice pulley handles made today, from a set of original Profoil handles/with added rings (couldnt find any pulleys small enough) & found a place to get "ParaCord", in many different colors, nice & thin yet super strong, like 5mm climbing rope, & makes great sleeving with the core pulled out... Now to give em a try on the "Buster"...

archkiter - 18-11-2007 at 01:18 AM

You can get small kite pulleys at West Marine pretty cheap

Pdxnebula - 21-11-2007 at 12:35 AM

UpDate: Tried them on the ProFoil 3.5mē today, they didnt do much but make it lots harder to apply the brakes... So once again, didnt even try em out on the "Buster" considering how hard I had to pull on the smaller kite, & they had plenty of free movement with the rings, I dont think that pulleys would have much more of an effect on the movement of the lines...

They work fine on the larger kites, it goes something like this, hold the handles with your hands just under the power lines, harnessed in, turn the kite over hard, then slide your hand down the handle till you get close to the brake leader, then pull hard, the kite will turn on a wingtip.

I don't believe you followed the plans I posted or used the right pulleys which are Harkin 404s. By using the wrong pulley you have created more resistance and made them harder to use. We fly them on JoJo RM+ foils from 4 to 16 meter and Libre's Vampir Race Pro foils and enjoy the benefits they provide.

PS Aren't you the same guy that power washes his foils at the car wash?

Just got my Power Pulley Handles from kitebuggyspeedshop.com

They work Awesome.. Made the 12.5m Blaze act so much better..

Thanks for the advice and help..
