Distance Buggy Event

archkiter - 3-12-2007 at 10:56 PM

I am trying to organize a two week long distance buggy event here in Oregon. The idea would be to have a group of people (who ever is interested) buggy all of the Oregon coastline in support of wind energy. Of course the entire coastline cannot be traversed by buggy, but much of it can, so the idea would be to work either from south to north (or north to south), buggying at all of the rideable beaches, with a goal of covering 363 miles (the distance of the entire Oregon coastline). Each pilot could seek sponsorship for each mile they cover (ie: $0.10 per mile for 363 miles = $36). The money raised would then go towards one or several non-profit organizations helping to establish or promote Wind Energy.

Obviously this is still in the planning stages, but I am seeking funding from a few sources, that would allow for some provisions for people who wish to participate- hopefully stuff like food, and camp ground sites, maybe more. Pilots would need to provide their own buggy and kites as well as mode of transport. The travel schedule would be somewhat flexible to allow for varied wind and weather conditions. If people could buggy 10 out of 14 days and cover an average of 36.3 miles per day then the goal of 363 miles could be met.

Tentative dates are planned for mid June. I am looking for people who are interested in participating and organizing. Any comments or feedback is welcome :karate:

Interested, give me a shout when you get a few more details together. We're usually down that way at some point in the summer.

Would love to, but I'm in Colorado :sniff: Too bad it doesn't coincide with my bi-yearly trip up there. (Photography trip) Good luck though!

Thanks to those of you who have posted and sent me U2U's with feed back :D

My hope is that this could be a great event that will draw some media attention, raise awareness and funding for wind energy, and most of all be a memorable time buggying on some of the best beaches in the NW. :singing:

Lets keep hearing your ideas!

Great idea! Taking off where the guys who snow kited North Dakota left off. I know in my area, I can find about 20 wind turbines, some of which are viewable from flying spots. The Tugg Hill Snowkiting event that Ozone and Windzup are throwing is happening in a wind farm. Wind Power does work, and it just needs some more attention! If I wasn't on the other side of the country, and never sat in a buggy, I would be there for it.

That would be so cool!

I'll post the final details on Power Kite Canada as well.

2 weeks of buggying on the OR Coast, sounds as good as NABX.

Hey I wanna go too. Which end do we start at, South end or North end of the Oregon Coast? I have tried a few great beaches on the left coast but a lot of them sure are tide restrictive, but nothing you can't overcome. Let me know if I can help.

I was thinking South to North but I guess that it doesn't really matter does it?

Jon let me know about that bigfoot setup- since I think that will be essential for this trip!

...more details soon....

Cheers,
Stace

Not sure we can do the whole two weeks, but would definately like to join you all for a week or so. Let us know if there's anything we can do to help set this up.
