Knee sliding hurts,

Teaman - 20-1-2008 at 02:43 PM

Hi, I don't post much as I'm new to kiteboarding.
I own a radsail 3 and 7 meter pro kites
an RK3 board which is great although I have a feeling the blue egg shocks arnt made for my weight

anyway after a rather large ooh I'm gonna regret that in the morning crash today I have just bought some impact shorts

what I have been troweling ebay for aswell are some knee protectors or knee shin.

It was easy when I did downhill mountain bikes but I dont want any to dig into the sand or soil causing me to face plant.

would you happen to know of any makes I should look out for.

Thanks

Stu

Get the biggest most heavily padded skateboarding knee pads you can find. They are the single most important piece of safety gear you can get after a helmet.

Always aim for the ass :)
that's all i have to say really, it applies to every aspect of kite sports, kite surfing, landboarding and snowboarding....

LEAN BACK!

not forward.

I've got a set of MACE Knee pads that are nice and comfy and stay put. Easy to get on and off. I've heard good things about sixsixone as well and have a pressure suit of theirs that I like but the fit was hard to get right...I ended up with a good arm fit and a little to love about the torso fit.

Hi Teaman

since you mention you are new to ATB kiteboarding,
just make sure you dont fit your feet too tight into the board straps for now.

It gives you a chance to get out of your board fast enough when a gust would make you lose balance forward. like this you might save some knee scratches.

Impact shorts..... I see them mentioned in the forum every now and then,,, I am about to start landboarding,,,, do I need these "impact shorts"? I ride only on the beach. What are the benifits?

I have wondered about even having the bindings on at all during the first few tries on the board. Is that a bad idea to just take them off while getting used to the forces involved with kiting on a board? I would like the ability to step off if I feel it getting the best of me and I'm headed out the front. At first I won't be at all interested in jumping. I want everything but the kite to be completely under the control of gravity at first. I'm not partial to doing Superman stunts and the bindings look like a superman waiting to happen.

Hey BB,

That's the first thing I did when I got my board...took off the straps!

In my inland conditions it is almost impossible to not get pulled forward once in a well no matter how much I lean back...the nature of riding inland gusty conditions. And no matter how loose my straps were, I still could not get my feet out fast enough (on occasion).

By riding strapless, I like to think I'm preparing myself for riding strapless on a surfboard  I also like the "freedom" it provides.

Obviously, riding strapless, you probably will not be able to hold down as much power or get air,,,but when that time comes, just throw them on again.

Good luck!

I got rid of my 661 knee/shin guards because they offer very little impact protection. They had really good coverage but were too thin, even crashing on the beach. I'm sure a dry lake bed would hurt even worse.
I started to use the protec park pads which offer loads of impact protection and added upper thigh and upper shin protection. The pad has to take the force of the blow. skate park pads are made for highr falls with more force. i wear impact shorts too. In my experience people who get injuries DON'T wear pads. I feel more confident too.

best,
matt

check out the impact shorts and impact shirt from hillbilly. I don't ride ever without the shorts!

joecat - 3-3-2008 at 06:52 PM

thanks,,, good advise.

does Hillbilly have a website? Hillbilly.com?

Here's a good reason to wear impact shorts

But pain like that just hurts! I've got a picture just like that I'll post. It's not for the squeamish but it was like a badge of honor to the boys because I went to the skatepark and rode with them.

While that was loading, I thought I got tricked into a naked bugging picture.

But really, thats gotta hurt. I fly on concrete all the time, its only a matter of time now

WELDNGOD - 4-3-2008 at 08:00 PM

I had jeans on that day. It is all bruise ,the next day it went all the way around my thigh:o

barnes - 5-3-2008 at 04:57 AM

I think its time to break out my old roller hockey pads. You all have me afraid!

WELDNGOD - 5-3-2008 at 02:47 PM

Don't forget the shingaurds, I wiped out and the board flipped over. The kite dragged me across the board and the trucks carved out a valley in my shin.

I don't at all mind being naked, but I'm not really interested in others seeing me that way! :moon:

Welcome to the forum Teaman. Ouch. That hurt.

burritobandit - 7-3-2008 at 10:33 PM

I took the bindings off my landboard for my first few rides as well. I made it a point not to get going too fast, and focused on my kite placement/movement in the window. Even though I've been skating since I was a kid, I did have to hop off the board a few times because of a gust, powering up wrong, or not having my board pointing downwind enough on start. Not having the bindings was great for quick hopoffs and retrys. I rode with a jeans and knee/elbow/wristpads/helmet just in case.

Sthrasher38 - 8-3-2008 at 08:17 AM

Welcome to the forum also. Thanks for your post.
