Next Sunday for a whole week there will be 7 wings and 10 boards to demo on and see if either is for you. As wrote by Jeremy (President of Dirtsurfer
North America) in the Wingsurfer forum
hris Middleton, Matt George and I are heading down to Vegas to do free Dirtsurfer and Kitewing demos on Ivanpah Dry Lake Bed from January 28 through
February 3, 2008. We'll be joining locals Joe Reid (Vegasboarder) and Ramona Nelson. There will be 10 boards to demo and 7 wings and so far it looks
like we'll have a solid turn-out! We'll be shooting video and giving away free schwag. Can't wait to get out of the Canadian snow and into the sun and
dirt! Ivanpah is a dream location!!!
If you've never tried Kitewing or Dirtsurfer before, no worries - we'll have you up and riding within a half hour. Give us a call at the numbers on
the poster below to find out exact times and where to meet us for your free lesson. Everyone is welcome to come as often as possible and ride as long
as they'd like for no charge. We will have gear on site, but bring your own if you have it. Anyone under 21 will need a parent or guardian to sign a
waiver for them. See you there!!!
I dont know how to post pics on here, so feel free to look at the flyer on the Wingsurfer forum

Hey Sailors,
Don't mean to put a damper on things...
But a couple of issues come up...
First, as a restricted access location, do you have the needed commercial permits? Last thing we need is to create problems with the authorities.
Do you have port-o-lets?
What about the trash issue with lots of guests?
How about your insurance?
A waiver does not do the job.
We have rain in the forecast for Wednesday-Friday (Jan. 23-25)
Do you have alternate locations?
We have had issues in the past with commercial activities on Ivanpah Lake bed. There are alternatives.
I am merely trying to maintain our access.
Not squash yours.

Hey Corey,
Thank you for raising these questions. To clarify, we will most likely be holding the event on the Whiskey Pete's side to avoid permit issues. I will
personally be picking up any trash left behind (though we will make it very clear the "pack it in,pack it out" mantra)
As for insurance, I was not aware we needed any. The demos and rides are for free,so as we are not charging a for a professional service, I never
thought to look into it. Can you U2U me anything that conflicts with that?
I've also considered the rain and as we all know, it can be hit-and-miss out there or a full on gale, only time will tell. I'll be checking on it
saturday to make sure it's dry if it does indeed rain before any activity takes place.
Alternate Locations- Jean,Roach, & Eldorado playas are all viable options, along with the playa out in pahrump. If all else fails, the video
shooting will have to be at Red Lake or we might just have to hold downhill only demos in Boulder City, though we hope it does not come to that.

correct me if I'm wrong, but we need to apply to City of Needles for a user permit to use Ivanpah.
kitemaker4 - 21-1-2008 at 10:15 PM
Yes you need to talk with the BLM Needles office for a permit for Ivanhah.

Hey Sailors,
Cool.
West Ivanpah is unrestricted.
Pretty good surface too.
It gets very little use.
Access is behind (south & east of) Wiskey Pete's and street cars can drive onto the lake bed with no problem, as long as the surface is dry.
While there is a potential for showers this coming weekend, hopefully they will be localized and spare us.
The insurance issue applies to permits to use the main part of the lake bed on the east side of Interstate 15.
Good luck and I hope I can get out there.

Hey Sailors,
One more note on BLM permits for Ivanpah.:
If you are only attending nabx, there is no need for an individual permit.
Private use permits are issued by the Bureau of Land Management.
The BLM is a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The BLM Needles (CA) Field Office administers the area that includes Ivanpah Dry Lake.
There are no permits from the city of Needles.
The BLM Field Office is located there.
Individual use permits are free and may be acquired by calling Merle at the Needles office during normal business hours (remember we are in the
Pacific time zone).
His number is 760/326-7000
No other dry lake beds, in California or Nevada, require permits.
Some, like China Lake, Edwards, Rosamond, Silver and Groom Lake are restricted by the military, so we don't go there.
That still leaves nearly 90 dry lakes in the Mojave to explore.
Game On!

corey, when are you starting your quest to buggy the rest of the 90 dry lakes. call me when you do, I need a kitebuggy road trip.
coreykite - 23-1-2008 at 02:51 PM
Hey Ripper,
I started exploring the Mojave dry lake beds back in 1991.
The buggy is a wonderful excuse to explore the roads less traveled.
So far I've hit about 20 of the lake beds.
Only 5 or 6 are good sailing/buggy venues.
But the search continues.
I've also explored dry lake beds in South Africa and Australia.
I've even know a couple of places to buggy in Japan.
Get dean jordan to tell you the story about our sunset buggy runs through a Robert Altman movie set on Silurian Dry Lake.
Let's find some more good times.
