do you just have to ride fakey when going one way and normal when going the other way?

In otherwords, you've always gotta be facing the kite right?

you can ride with your back to the kite but it will tire you out quickly and you won't have as much leverage to work upwind. This is mostly used to setup for a direction change or to correct one where you turned toeside and now have your back to the kite.
