I can't seem to get a confident answer from any of the local DIY shops about the best paint to use for this application. I want to do some nice
graphics and airbrushing and for ease of cleanup would love to find something water based which I can then lacquer or apply a urethane finish over to
protect and waterproof - and get me a nice shine. Any thoughts?
NPW - you mentioned skate board paint. Do you know what kind of paint that is?

I've heard others say that they used automotive touch up paint but haven't tried it myself. The only paint I've used is polyurethane marine topside
paint, but that's way too dangerous to spray without specialized breathing equip.

Why not put on a couple coats of epoxy resin that is suitable for wooden boatbuilding and ride it first before going whole hog on the paint job? In
any case, you'll have a properly sealed board for finish paint.
I painted the topsides of my Holder 20 sailboat with System Three waterborne LP paint, rolled and tipped. They have a gloss clear topcoat as well.
I've also rolled and tipped 1-part marine polyurethanes (Interlux Brightsides). Don't know about the little quantities for airbrush work though.

It sounds more and more like that's gonna be the ticket. I'm gonna see if I can find any here. Is this something you find at a DIY shop or at an
autobody supply place? Not having much luck at the DIYs.....

Epoxy can be mail ordered easily. Don't use polyester, even though auto body shops will have it. More toxic, and it really is not hydrophobic. Also
more brittle than epoxy, so doesn't flex well or accomadate wood movement.

Noah's has a location in Toronto and one in Nigara Falls in US. They are a great resource for wood and composite boatbuilding supplies, and know
there stuff.
A number of friends of mine have used oil-based exterior primer and oil-based polyurethane floor and porch enamel as a cheaper way to finish wood
epoxy strip canoes and it seems to work out alright for a "workboat" finish.
Have you checked out the Yahoo Boardbuilders Group? Bound to be answers to specific questions regarding paint & finish there.
