Strop Line?

Dax - 10-4-2008 at 09:50 AM

Ok, I've searched, and pardon my newb-ness, but can someone please explain in detail a strop line (hopefully with pictures)? I keep seeing it pop up in conversations, but I can't visualize how it is set up....

Is it something that allows you to hook-in on a kite with handles? Please help me understand this mysterious thing!

no worries Matt I asked the same question as do most....Angus posted a nice pic of a strop. Make a loop and tie a figure 8 knot on each end of your line, then larks them to the power line pigtails on the back of your handles. The strop is placed in the spreader bar hook on your harness. Power/pressure from the kite is then transferred to your harness and gives your arms a well deserved break. It also allows you to lean back or forward (heel or toeside) much further on the board to get upwind. Some folks incorporate a safety release for strops. I havent done so yet but probably should

Angus WOW! what a fountain of info. NICE!
I use a strop on my npw5 on the grip so i can tweak the brake tension as wind speed changes i assume it is easier on front line bias rigs? it works well when the air consistent the line wears quickly though but well worth it . near flawless 2hr session .

Wow Angus is right! You know, I bestowed a Pansh on my brother in law at Christmas this past year and it was the info on flying traction kites from your site that I did up for him in a nice booklet so he would be less likely to kill himself. (I duly credited you as my source.) This new entry is over the top! Thanks for taking the time to put that out there for people!

how would you get a safety device for the strop and also what sort of rope would you use

torisspacedog - 11-4-2008 at 09:19 PM

I run my strop thru a Petzel mini pulley which is attached to harness with a Wichard QR For line I use 6mm parachute cord because I have a ton of it and it works quite well

I have made up some of the " cotter pin " designed ones on this site via NPW for the end of my strops.

So far , so good  I am only at the point of testing them but haven't had a failure yet. Nor an unwanted release. Maybe only 5 or 6 hours fly time using them and not always on the same strop. I don't think I'm ready to trust it jumping yet.
Try this AT YOUR OWN RISK :!:
