Flysurfers = Stone Age?

bloah - 11-4-2008 at 10:47 AM

So I was out on the beach, the guy was out with his 12 m Crossbow and I was out with my flysurfer pulse 10m. I was overpowered with it big time, so I put it away, The trimmer was pulled in completely, and I was still getting lofted whenever flew it at 12 oclock, A bunch of kitesurfers on the lake where with 12 and 9's and they said the wind was around 20 knots. I am 150 lbs. The guy with a buggy was around 170 pounds.

So in the end a bunch of kitesurfers told me that my kite is stone age and I should switch to Cabrinha Switchblades.

So now I am confused, should I go lei's or what. I am taking Kitesurfing lessons in a month and then buying a bunch of new kites.

Any thoughts why people call flysurfers stone age?

strictlycarved - 11-4-2008 at 11:06 AM

cause their jealous. thats why you have to set the de-power and have a quiver no single kite can do it all. stick with the flysurfer.

domdino - 11-4-2008 at 11:09 AM

You should first do the mixer test on your pulse because it shouldn't be overpowering you in that kind of wind...

It does amaze me how ill educated so many people are when it comes to foils, they just have no idea... Cabrinha are expensive and i'm not really a big fan of their flying characteristics but that's just me, your kite is most certainly not from the stone age and will be a great kite surfing kite. I'm willing to bet that none of those folks have flown a modern foil, of course they like their cabrinha - that's the kite they own, i've flown far too many kites now it's kind of stupid :) but i'm pretty happy with flysurfer - mainly for the self launch and landing - the new pulses though fly just as we as modern hybrids and are a bit more stable.

Anyway, there are lots of other hybrids i would go to before the cabrinha switchblade. Remember static flying can be much harder to hold down then on the water - when you get out riding all the forces work with each other rather than just having your kite dangle around begging for something to pull!

I'd never just fly my kite around on the beach in 20knots, itll pull you all over the place and kinda hurt - you've really gotta be going straight out and riding in those conditions! Don't give up on your pulse yet, it should do you fine - give it a good try. I flew hybrids all last year (ocean rodeo and waroos) and i loved them but i couldn't fly them on my own like my flysurfers, still, you might prefer the way they feel so do give them a try, but not just cos some nitwits told you what they think about nothing they know about.

:)

That Pulse was My personal kite for a long time... i've had it in the Gorge at 27knots without touching the trimmer.... never been overpowered on that kite.

20knots is nothing for that kite and we weigh the same 155lbs....

double check the mixer, but that kite was perfect when it left here.

these FS kites are probably the most advanced kite designs out there.... not in the stone age by any means.

good luck with the local dis-believers..... it happens everywhere.

Back when I had my Psycho III, I took it with me down to FL for some kitesurfing instruction (I only had flown inland prior to that). The trainer was a GK guy and the local crew mostly flew either GS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s they bought from him or Best Waroo's. Anyhow, they had no idea what my kite was. They were warning me that my kite wouldn't float, that I couldn't depower it, etc. They recognized it as a foil kite, but only knew that from the fixed bridle foil kites that started the sport over a decade ago - they were unaware of how far foil design has advanced.

I could see coastal kiters who fly in areas that are 100% inflato not recognizing a Flysurfer or Peter Lynn and thinking you're some lunatic flying an open cell foil from "back in the day".

I will say that all ribbing and commentary stopped when I unpacked, self launched, and let the kite inflate in the sky in less than 3 minutes. They were equally impressed with the self landings.

Needless to say, I spent more time watching those guys take turns on my kite than I did learning to kitesurf with it. I will add that Flysurfer would have won themselves several converts that day, until I told them the price...

They were happy to go back to their lei's after that.

I had this kite (now I have the P3 10m), but I still own the Pulse 7m, and will not get rid of it. So stable and predictable in high winds. Never found the end of it.

As for the Pulse 10m, I snowkited with it easy up to 25 knots.

Don't forget also that your 10m foil is probably equals to a 12m bow or a 14m C shape kite in term of projected area thus power.

You have a great kite, dont get rid of it.

I ride a balloon too sometimes, but I most prefer riding a foil. The Pulse have more depower than my balloon and so do my other flysurfer too (P3 and Speed2)

The only reason I have a balloon was to get me some confidence on water in the first rides because it floats better. There are good LEI kites, they are fun to ride too, but self launching is hasardeous, and self landing forget it.

A balloon is also more fragile and loose value so fast. Your Pulse is still worth a lot of money for a 2006 kite.

leebrianh - 11-4-2008 at 12:19 PM

I get that a lot as I am the only person flying Flysurfer.

First of all, I don't think Flysurfers are stone age (quite opposite as a matter of fact) but even if it is, I will still fly flysurfer because that's what I like. I mean, it's my money, my kite and I should fly whatever I like.

I am not an "anti-tube" kiter and would like to say go out there, try as many kites as you can and choose what fits you most. Who knows, it could be Cabrinha

I think you should try everything you can get your hands on. Partly because it will give you a balanced view of what works and what doesn't, and partly because the experience will make you a better kiter. I certainly wouldn't make a switch because someone else, who's never flown a Flysurfer, thinks it's from the "stone age".

exactly...

speleopower - 11-4-2008 at 06:33 PM

Try and fly everything you can. Then stick with what you like. I sold off my first LEI back in 1999 when I went to foils. I've not looked back.

The cool thing is I can fly all the different LEI kites but very few if any LEI flyers could kitesurf with a Blade IV-which is what I am currently flying.

Actually the only LEI kite that I like to fly is my North Rhino 6 meter that I won in a kitesurfing contest back in the beginning of 2002. Which makes it a 2001 model. It still flys well.

I might add (and this is directed to anyone out there who, like myself, has switched from LEI's to foils years back) that if you haven't tried one of the latest generation inflatos (bow or SLE) you really owe it to yourself to give one a go. I was thoroughly impressed with how much better my Bularoos fly over anything else I've flown (sort of a combination of the stability of a PL Arc plus the turning speed of a C-kite plus the relaunchability of a Flysurfer for about 1/3 the cost of a decent foil). Just my 2 cents...

tridude - 12-4-2008 at 05:32 AM

oh well just call me Fred Flinstone.............................. Seriously, the LEIs guys who have flown my Psychos really like them. The hook seems to be unfold, fly, self land and launch. Sorry but Im on my 13 and their swapping down to 10-12s. No question the FSer has better depower. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I can get out on my 8m using the directional while they are flying 13-15s. The board helps but no question the power and efficiency of the foil is evident (projected area). The 8m Psycho 3 is sweet sail! I have had a go on Waroos and Bullaroos and yes they are nice. In summary, Im flying two kites while most of them are using 3 or 4 to cover the same winds so price in the long run equals out. As Kahuna says try and fly what you like.

dylanj423 - 12-4-2008 at 07:05 AM

I dont know much about surf kites, but I do know that flysurfer kites are the ones I will buy. I have some real old ones, and was flying one of them yesterday at the park in 3mph winds. The 9m was draggin me around a bit. If i could afford the newer ones, id buy them without question. I like the idea of unassisted launch and landing.

Even my old flysurfer has great depower... just let go of the bar, and down she went. Just like my land foils. Easy relaunch, too... and no pumping. I have flown only one lei, and was pretty surprised at how nimble it was, but the safety was more involved than my speedair.

Anyway, its funny how people think they know everything, and it sounds to me like those guys you encountered spoke a little too soon. Keep on with your flysurfer... or if you wanna sell it, maybe make me an offer!

Bladerunner - 12-4-2008 at 08:33 AM

WELL SAID BIG S-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-,

Slowly but surely I have seen Blimps take on more and more of the methods poineered by Flysurfer. Bridling, variable geometry and now this year ....... JET FLAPS :flaming:

I forget what brand it is but they claim to be the 1st and call it something else. 1st on a single skin maybe but my 05 has jet flaps.

Like folks are saying these folks that think Flysurfer is in the Stone age are lost in the Sixties !! Next time ask them if they have flown a Pulse, Pulse 2 or Phsyco 3 . ;-)

Domdimo is also right ! You need more power on the water so flying the kite in those winds standing around is a NO,NO, !!!! Avoid leaving the kite at 12:00

KEEP IT LOW AND GO is the new rule now you are on water !!!

A blimp well suited to land is the Bullaroo ( + maybe Ocean Rodeo ) The Bularoo has extra tough scuff pads and things for on land.

USA_Eli_A - 12-4-2008 at 11:22 AM

lei's depower down to nothing usually, probably just have one of the flysurfer reps peep your kite and make sure it's all good.

don't get down on your gear, 'haters' often try to sell what they fly because of LDS....it's a condition commonly caused by cold water, affects the distance from brain to mouth...

when the kites that lifty grab a board and bust a phat air...then sell them a flysurfer!

bloah - 12-4-2008 at 11:30 AM

going to try it on water very soon, booked my lesson already. Now I am back to my original idea of buying flysurfer P2 6m. I want to use it on water with 20 knots plus, what do you guys think? would that be enough I am 150 pounds. Or shall i go p2 8m, but then to much overlap with p1 10m.

USA_Eli_A - 12-4-2008 at 11:57 AM

check with power zone kite sports....I'm not familiar with flysurfer....you have the right ideas!

I think the gap between the 8 and 10m is small. I'd rather have a 6, which will be useful on land or snow also.

you can also complement larger gaps by having different size boards. The board size makes a big difference in light wind, and high too.

Boards cost less than kites.
