How to find good locations?

Odin043 - 4-5-2008 at 12:21 PM

Hello, I recently discovered Power Kiting and after seeing some Youtube videos, I really want to try it out.

The problem is I'm not sure if the wind around my area is strong enough.

Does anyone know the wind speed required for an amateur, and if any tools exist to find locations that are suitable?

Use google earth and search your area for big open spaces. The trick is to be as far downwind as possible from anything that will mess up the wind and still have more room in case you get dragged downwind.

If you live near any beaches, they are usually good.

The fact you have low wind only means you want to start with a bit larger kite. A 3m will fly in almost no wind and would be a good size to look at.

Avoid 2 line foils accept one called the Sensei trainer. Having brakes ( 3 or 4 lines ) makes reverse lauching after a crash and bringing the kite down a snap.
